Internet and remote access services are growing by leaps and bounds, and major efforts are currently underway to provide greater bandwidth to the user by a multitude of access technologies, both wired and wireless. This article discusses the key access technologies currently being developed by vendors and deployed by service providers. It is expected that xDSL, cable data networks, and fixed and mobile wireless networks will be the hotbeds of tough competition, while direct satellite networks will hover over them with the potential to completely change the way the access networks are built. Optical access networks are beginning to be deployed at the edge of the optical backbone network to support access by the high-end users that drive increased bandwidth demands. This development in the applications of optical networking poses new challenges in the areas of medium access, topology design, and network management. In particular, since optical access networks carry high volumes of critical traffic, the level of reliability and robustness traditionally reserved for core applications must be implemented in access networks. We survey access network architectures and outline the issues associated with providing reliability for these architectures. In the area of architecture design, two main approaches emerge. The first considers dedicated optical access networks, such as stars or folded buses, to implement optical access LANs and MANs. The second is overlay architectures, which use existing network infrastructure. Overlay architectures seek to replicate, on a smaller scale, logical topologies akin to those of backbone networks, or may instead create architectures specifically designed for access purposes  相似文献

Advances in networking and hardware are motivating the development of high bandwidth local access networks that connect subscriber communities to the Information Superhighway. Hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) technology is emerging as one of the few economical viable technologies for designing new local access networks. These HFC local access networks are expected to support a variety of services in different spheres in an integrated manner, by drawing upon diverse technologies from the cable, computer, and telecommunications industries: the tree-and-branch network topology is typical of the cable network; intelligence in the end devices is a characteristic of the computer industry; and addressability, global interconnectivity, and quality of service (QoS) are characteristic of the telecommunications industry. It is this combination of diverse services and technologies that poses fundamental challenges in architecting a management system for HFC networks. We present the application of quantum key distribution (QKD) technologies to fiber-based broad-band passive optical access networks. This application is based on our 850-nm wavelength gigahertz clock-rate single-receiver system, is compatible with existing telecommunications fiber and exploits a wavelength band not currently utilized in access networks. The developed QKD networks are capable of transmitting over distances consistent with the span of access links for metropolitan networks (10 km), at clock frequencies ranging up to 3 GHz  相似文献

垂直切换是多网融合的基础,是实现异构网络互通、支持不同接入方式无缝衔接的核心技术,目前正在受到业界的重点关注,并成为学术界研究的热点问题。随着无线移动通信技术向接入多元化、网络一体化和应用综合化的方向发展,各种蜂窝移动接入、宽带无线接入和固定接入将共同接入基于IP的统一核心网络,通过网络间的垂直切换,支持用户的移动性和移动过程中业务的连续性。首先给出了垂直切换的定义和基本概念,介绍了垂直切换的分类和基本流程,随后详细论述垂直切换的切换判决和切换执行2个环节。针对切换判决,总结了现有判决算法,重点评述各代表算法工作原理并剖析论其特点和存在的不足。针对切换执行,详述了现有垂直切换执行机制的工作原理和适用场景,并分析其优缺点。最后,对未来垂直切换技术的研究方向进行了展望。  相似文献

The 4G or Beyond 3G wireless networks is consist of IP-based heterogeneous access networks from 3G cellular, WiFi, WiMAX to other emerging access technologies such as mesh networks. The key objective of designing the next generation wireless networks is to support of mobile subscribers. To support the mobile host in the hybrid wireless access technologies, many solutions based on network protocol stack have been proposed in the literature. In this article, after review of mobility concepts, a special attention is given to some of the mobility management methods as well as handover techniques across various wireless access networks. We have also compared the major mobility protocols in each layer for their features. Finally, some of the open issues that needed to be addressed in mobility management protocol in the next generation wireless networks are outlined.  相似文献
