Clearing hurdles in teacher adoption and sustained use of research-based instruction

Gersten et al., in this issue of JLD, have pinpointed variables that preclude teachers' sustenance of research-based instructional strategies. These variables fall squarely on the shoulders of intervention researchers. However, they have not attended to variables that stem from teachers themselves. Hence, in my commentary, I focus on teacher variables that account for their lack of initiation and sustenance of research-based instructional strategies. Specifically, I highlight teachers' (a) overarching conceptions of teaching, (b) subject-area knowledge, and (c) sense of self-efficacy. Of these, for reasons given in my article, I elaborate more on teacher self-efficacy. I conclude with suggestions on promoting teacher self-efficacy.

Clearing cervical spine injuries: a discussion of the process and the problems

This article identifies and describes the standards of care in treating, diagnosing, and managing suspected cervical spine injuries. Staff experience, nursing, and medical literature provide insight into the complications associated with spine immobilization. Review of medical literature provides background on the standard diagnostic exams utilized and the rationale for the number and variety of tests included in the clearance process. Opportunities for reviewing practice, with an emphasis on limiting the effects of immobilization, can provide future challenges to nursing.     

Clearing the mind: A working memory model of distraction from negative mood.

The present research examined whether and how loading working memory can attenuate negative mood. In three experiments, participants were exposed to neutral, weakly negative, or strongly negative pictures followed by a task and a mood scale. Working memory demands were varied by manipulating task presence (Study 1), complexity (Study 2), and predictability (Study 3). Participants in all three experiments reported less negative moods in negative trials with high compared to low working memory demand. Working memory demands did not affect mood in the neutral trials. When working memory demands were high, participants no longer reported more negative moods in response to strongly negative pictures than to weakly negative pictures. These findings suggest that loading working memory prevents mood-congruent processing, and thereby promotes distraction from negative moods. 1. The rise in prescribing costs in developed countries is a concern for all physicians, but a particular challenge for clinical pharmacologists. 2. There are wide variations in the amounts and types of drugs prescribed in developed countries. 3. In order to address cost appropriately it is also necessary to address quality. Various aspects of the quality of therapeutics may be considered, including audit of process, patterns of prescribing of specific drugs and reporting of adverse drug reactions. 4. A consensus process is described in which primary care physicians developed criteria of prescribing quality, using data readily available within the UK. Practitioners scores using these criteria did not correlate directly with prescribing costs, indicating that cost alone cannot be used as criterion of quality. 5. The measurement of quality in therapeutics remains an important challenge for the future.

Clearing the Air: Identity Safety Moderates the Effects of Stereotype Threat on Women's Leadership Aspirations.

Exposing participants to gender-stereotypic TV commercials designed to elicit the female stereotype, the present research explored whether vulnerability to stereotype threat could persuade women to avoid leadership roles in favor of nonthreatening subordinate roles. Study 1 confirmed that exposure to the stereotypic commercials undermined women's aspirations on a subsequent leadership task. Study 2 established that varying the identity safety of the leadership task moderated whether activation of the female stereotype mediated the effect of the commercials on women's aspirations. Creating an identity-safe environment eliminated vulnerability to stereotype threat despite exposure to threatening situational cues that primed stigmatized social identities and their corresponding stereotypes.
