Tubal endometriosis diagnosed within one month after menarche: a case report

The effects of long term melphalan-prednisolone (MP) therapy was studied on 12 patients with POEMS (polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, M protein, and skin changes) syndrome. Six were treated with MP every six weeks for 16 to 52 months; three also with cyclophosphamide, and three with localised irradiation for osteoclastic lesions. Five of the six survived during the follow up period and showed various degrees of lessening of their neuropathy and other symptoms. There were no serious side effects. The other six patients received treatments that included corticosteroids, short term chemotherapy, or irradiation, but not long term chemotherapy. Five showed transient lessening of their non-neurological symptoms, and one, obvious neurological improvement. Five of these six patients died from nine to 70 months after POEMS onset. The findings suggest that long term MP therapy may be an effective treatment for the POEMS syndrome.     

Treatment of destructive acute pancreatitis with the new biologically active substance in experiments

An acute destructive pancreatitis (ADP) was simulated according to the original method with subsequent conduction of the conventional conservative therapy and pancreatic resection in 25 mongrel dogs. The mortality due to ADP lessening was promoted by the new biologically-active substance application.

Rehabilitation of the temporomandibular joint through the application of motion

This paper presents a method of joint rehabilitation utilizing the principals of active motion and CPM (continuous passive motion) and joint unloading. Most true intra-articular disorders appear to be a progression of both chemical and mechanical alterations. The physiological sound principals of joint mobilization are used both as post surgical rehabilitation and as definitive therapy. When used as nonsurgical therapy, the benefits appear to be as a result of a reversal, lessening, or a favorable adaptive response of the chemical and mechanical alterations.     

Information assimilation from updated alphanumeric displays.

The accuracy with which Ss could locate updated elements of information was studied as a function of use of coded vs. uncoded updates, number of elements of information presented, and number of elements of information updated. Selected findings demonstrate the value of coding as an information enhancement technique and the considerable effects of elements presented and updated. With uncoded displays a reduction in the percentage of responses as the number of updates increased may reflect a lessening of Ss' confidence in their ability to make correct responses even though their actual performance did not appear to suffer. Psychotherapy with rape victims.

Reviews literature on psychological response and treatment of rape victims. A model of victim response is presented that posits 5 phases: initial, denial, symptom formation, anger, and resolution. It is predicted that psychotherapists will be treating rape victims with greater frequency in the future. Attitudes of the public and law enforcement officers are changing; there is a lessening of the stigma and insensitive treatment rape victims experienced in the past. Group therapy for patients with hysteria (Briquet's disorder)

It was found that group therapy helped patients with hysteria by (1) satisfying their need to talk (2) lessening their concern about their physical symptoms (3) giving them important knowledge of the illness (4) giving them new ways of handling the illness by themselves (5) giving them the support and the companionship of the other group members (6) reducing their need of medicines (7) reducing psychiatry visits (8) helping them to get along better with their families (9) increasing their self-confidence and (10) improving their mood.

Does duodenal atresia and stenosis prevent midgut volvulus in malrotation?

The risk-benefit balance when aspirin is compared with aspirin combined with ticlopidine is being investigated in several multicentre trials (MUSIC and WEST II versus TASTE, MUST, and STARS respectively). Cardiologists follow one of two strategies. Some prefer a more aggressive antiplatelet regimen, disregarding the risk of neutropenia (0.7%) because they want to avoid lessening the therapeutic effect of vessel patency obtained with stent implantation. Others give only aspirin (a money saving approach) confident that IVUS inspection (an expensive approach) will allow an adequate evaluation of full stent expansion and lesion coverage, despite a more pronounced activation of the coagulation cascade. Our impression so far is that the combination of ticlopidine and aspirin has a more favourable risk-effect balance.     

On the Issue "What Is a Science?"

Effect of following an excitatory-inhibitory compound with an intermediate reinforcer.

Pavlovian-conditioned inhibition training of the form A++, AB- (where ++ is a strong reinforcer and - is nonreinforcement) was conducted in 3 experiments with rats and 1 with pigeons. Then AB + training was given (in which + is an effective reinforcer that is weaker than ++). The + reinforcer was achieved by reducing the frequency, lessening the amount, or lengthening the delay with which ++ was delivered. All 4 experiments found the AB+ treatment to enhance responding to both the excitatory A and the inhibitory B in comparison with untreated control stimuli. However, when appropriate assessments were made, the increase was more substantial for the inhibitory B. This pattern of results presents challenges for most current theories of associative learning. Peacemaking and consolation in Japanese preschoolers witnessing peer aggression.

This article reports developmental changes relating to reconciliation and bystanders' affiliation with victims of aggression (i.e., consolation) among 3- to 5-year-old Japanese preschool children. Use of the postconflict-matched control (PC-MC) method revealed that the frequency with which reconciliation and consolation were offered to a victim increased steeply in 5-year-olds, compared with 3- and 4-year-olds. The complexity of contextual factors affecting the occurrence of reconciliation and the form of consolation increased with age. Consolation occurred more often before reconciliation than after among all but the 3-year-olds and occurred more often when no reconciliation occurred than when it did occur among all classes. These findings support the view that consolation functions as a substitute for reconciliation, lessening the tension experienced by the victim of aggression. Convergence: A phenomenon in counseling and in psychotherapy.

The convergence postulate "affords meaningfulness and focus to the making of a social-structural analysis of the therapeutic process." Research "on therapeutic convergence may help make clear in what ways therapy, as a social event, may differ from other diadic relationships in everyday life."
