He has worked with men's issues in older people and serves as a leading advocate of group therapy with older adults. As an intern at Howard University Hospital, he recognized the psychological needs of minorities and educated high school students in Washington, DC, about the medical risks and psychological issues confronting African Americans with end stage organ disease. His strong affiliation with the American Psychological Association (APA) and his research have reflected his commitment to disenfranchised populations. David C. McClelland.

David C. McClelland is recognized for his achievements in psychology. This article provides a citation explaining his accomplishments, a biography and a selected bibliography. With the rapidly mounting cost of medical care in hospitals, physicians must seek alternative forms of therapy for illnesses that could conceivably be treated by less confining methods. One appraoch to this problem is the Psoriasis Day Care Center, where psoriasis patients with extensive disease are treated during the day and allowed to return home at night. The advantages include reduced cost, accessibility for more patients, and superior therapeutic results. This day care center concept could be equally applicable to other diseases now routinely treated by complete hospitalization.

C. Shaler Smith

Smith was one of the premier bridge builders of the post-Civil War period. He started his bridge building career under Albert Fink on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. During the Civil War, he designed and built a powder factory for the Confederacy at Augusta, Ga. After the war, he formed Smith and Latrobe Co. and later The Baltimore Bridge Company with Benjamin and C. H. Latrobe. He worked closely with James Eads on the St. Louis Bridge and designed and built the long iron easterly approach to the bridge. He designed and built some of the major viaducts, swing, and fixed span bridges in the United States, Australia, and Peru, and finally innovative cantilever bridges over the Kentucky, Mississippi, and St. Lawrence Rivers.     

Daniel C. Darrow

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in pregnancy would help define a benign pelvic mass, thereby avoiding laparotomy. METHODS: During a 2-3-year period, five pregnant women with adnexal masses suspected to be leiomyomas underwent MRI. RESULTS: Four patients had evidence of leiomyoma and one had a benign cystic teratoma. All avoided laparotomy because of the almost certain radiologic findings of a benign process. In two women, there was an important effect on the pregnancy; one had fetal growth retardation and the other an outlet obstruction precluding vaginal delivery. Four of the patients underwent cesarean delivery. CONCLUSIONS: Magnetic resonance imaging can be used in the differential diagnosis of an adnexal mass in pregnancy. This will enable some pregnant patients to avoid laparotomy and its concomitant risks.     

O. Chanute, C.E.

Octave Chanute was one of the leading civil engineers in the United States in the period between 1850 and 1890. His work on eastern and western railroads was unsurpassed. He began his bridge building career in 1856 and designed his last major bridge in 1888. Starting in 1890, he began his study in the work that others conducted in the area of manned flight and designed and tested many of his own gliders. He later assisted the Wright Brothers in their experiments in Dayton and at Kitty Hawk.

Enzymatic activities of Campylobacter jejuni, C. coli, and C. lari

Many immunohistochemical studies have investigated the relationship between immunohistochemical characteristics and histopathological findings in colorectal tumors. One of the most extensively studied markers has been tissue CEA, although the prognostic significance of this and other antigens is still uncertain. The authors report results relative to three tumoral antigens (carcinoembryonic antigen, CEA; tissue polypeptide antigen. TPA, and carbohydrate antigen 19-9, CA 19-9) determined by immunohistochemical methods in tissue samples of 52 colorectal carcinomas. The relationship between the immunohistochemical characteristics of the neoplasms and the clinicopathologic parameters, as well as their influence on the prognosis of the patients, were examined. Positive CEA reaction has a significant relationship with grade of differentiation of the tumor while diffuse cellular expression of this antigen often indicates neoplasms extending beyond the intestinal wall and invading the lymph vessels. The number of tissue antigens expressed is significantly related to the extent of tumor spread through the intestinal wall. A greater incidence of recurrence and shorter disease-free interval and survival were observed in neoplasms that expressed tissue TPA antigen or more than one tissue antigens. In the present study the latter parameter has demonstrated to have independent prognostic significance for the disease-free interval. Immunohistochemical evaluation of antigens in colorectal carcinoma tissue shows a possible independent prognostic value of the antigenic heterogeneity of tumors, which could be related to their different biological behavior.

Coralyne binds tightly to both T.A.T- and C.G.C(+)-containing DNA triplexes

Coralyne is a DNA-binding antitumor antibiotic whose structure contains four fused aromatic rings. The interaction of coralyne with the DNA triplexes poly(dT).poly(dA).poly(dT) and poly[d(TC)].poly[d(GA)].poly[d(C+T)] was investigated by using three techniques. First, Tm values were measured by thermal denaturation analysis. Upon binding coralyne, both triplexes showed Tm values that were increased more than those of the corresponding duplexes. A related drug, berberinium, in which one of the aromatic rings is partially saturated, gave much smaller changes in Tm. Second, the fluorescence of coralyne is quenched in the presence of DNA, allowing the measurement of binding parameters by Scatchard analysis. The binding isotherms were biphasic, which was interpreted in terms of strong intercalative binding and much weaker stacking interactions. In the presence of 2 mM Mg2+, the binding constants to poly(dT).poly-(dA).poly(dT) and poly[d(TC)].poly[d(GA)].poly[(C+T)] were 3.5 x 10(6) M-1 and 1.5 x 10(6) M-1, respectively, while the affinity to the parent duplexes was at least 2 orders of magnitude lower. In the absence of 2 mM Mg2+, the binding constants to poly[d(TC)].poly[d(GA)].poly[d(C+T)] and poly-[d(TC)].poly[d(GA)] were 40 x 10(6) M-1 and 15 x 10(6) M-1, respectively. Thus coralyne shows considerable preference for the triplex structure but little sequence specificity, unlike ethidium, which will only bind to poly(dT).poly(dA).poly(dT). Further evidence for intercalation of coralyne was provided by an increase in the relative fluorescence quantum yield at 260 nm upon binding of coralyne to triplexes as well as an absence of quenching of fluorescence in the presence of Fe[(CN)6]4-.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
