Unidirectional (UD) silicon carbide (SiC) fiber-reinforced SiC matrix (UD SiCf/SiC) composites with CVI BN interphase were fabricated by polymer infiltration-pyrolysis (PIP) process. The effects of the anisotropic distribution of SiC fibers on the mechanical properties, thermophysical properties and electromagnetic properties of UD SiCf/SiC composites in different directions were studied. In the direction parallel to the axial direction of SiC fibers, SiC fibers bear the load and BN interphase ensures the interface debonding, so the flexural strength and the fracture toughness of the UD SiCf/SiC composites are 813.0 ± 32.4 MPa and 26.1 ± 2.9 MPa·m1/2, respectively. In the direction perpendicular to the axial direction of SiC fibers, SiC fibers cannot bear the load and the low interfacial bonding strengths between SiC fiber/BN interphase (F/I) and BN interphase/SiC matrix (I/M) both decrease the matrix cracking stress, so the corresponding values are 36.6 ± 6.9 MPa and 0.9 ± 0.5 MPa?m1/2, respectively. The thermal expansion behaviors of UD SiCf/SiC composites are similar to those of SiC fibers in the direction parallel to the axial direction of SiC fibers, and are similiar to those of SiC matrix in the direction perpendicular to the axial direction of SiC fibers. The total electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (EM SET) of UD SiCf/SiC composites attains 32 dB and 29 dB when the axial direction of SiC fibers is perpendicular and parallel to the electric field direction, respectively. The difference of conductivity in different directions is the main reason causing the different SET. And the dominant electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding mechanism is absorption for both studied directions.  相似文献

The effects of the SiC nanowires (SiCNWs) and PyC interface layers on the mechanical and anti-oxidation properties of SiC fiber (SiCf)/SiC composites were investigated. To achieve this, the PyC layer was coated on the SiCf using a chemical vapour infiltration (CVI) method. Then, SiCNWs were successfully coated on the surface of SiCf/PyC using the electrophoretic deposition method. Finally, a thin PyC layer was coated on the surface of SiCf/PyC/SiCNWs. Three mini-composites, SiCf/PyC/SiC, SiCf/PyC/SiCNWs/SiC, and SiCf/PyC/SiCNWs/PyC/SiC, were fabricated using the typical precursor infiltration and pyrolysis method. The morphologies of the samples were examined using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. Tensile and single-fibre push-out tests were carried out to investigate the mechanical performance and interfacial shear strength of the composites before and after oxidization at 1200 °C. The results revealed that the SiCf/PyC/SiCNWs/SiC composites showed the best mechanical and anti-oxidation performance among all the composites investigated. The strengthening and toughening is mainly achieved by SiCNWs optimization of the interfacial bonding strength of the composite and its own nano-toughening. On the basis of the results, the effects of SiCNWs on the oxidation process and retardation mechanism of the SiCf/SiC mini-composites were investigated.  相似文献

Interphase plays an important role in the mechanical behavior of SiC/SiC ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs). In this paper, the microstructure and tensile behavior of multilayered (BN/SiC)n coated SiC fiber and SiC/SiC minicomposites were investigated. The surface roughness of the original SiC fiber and SiC fiber deposited with multilayered (BN/SiC), (BN/SiC)2, and (BN/SiC)4 (BN/SiC)8 interphase was analyzed through the scanning electronic microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Monotonic tensile experiments were conducted for original SiC fiber, SiC fiber with different multilayered (BN/SiC)n interfaces, and SiC/SiC minicomposites. Considering multiple damage mechanisms, e.g., matrix cracking, interface debonding, and fibers failure, a damage-based micromechanical constitutive model was developed to predict the tensile stress-strain response curves. Multiple damage parameters (e.g., matrix cracking stress, saturation matrix crack stress, tensile strength and failure strain, and composite’s tangent modulus) were used to characterize the tensile damage behavior in SiC/SiC minicomposites. Effects of multilayered interphase on the interface shear stress, fiber characteristic strength, tensile damage and fracture behavior, and strength distribution in SiC/SiC minicomposites were analyzed. The deposited multilayered (BN/SiC)n interphase protected the SiC fiber and increased the interface shear stress, fiber characteristic strength, leading to the higher matrix cracking stress, saturation matrix cracking stress, tensile strength and fracture strain.  相似文献

Solutions of YPO4 were used to precipitate YPO4 on pre-oxidized Hi-Nicalon-S SiC fibers. Tows of the coated fibers were then infiltrated with a preceramic polymer loaded with SiC particles to form mini-composites. During pyrolysis of the matrix, SiO2 and YPO4 on the fibers reacted and formed a Y2Si2O7 fiber matrix interphase. Mini-composites were exposed to steam at 1000 °C for 10, 50, and 100 h, tensile tested, and the effect of oxidation in steam on the functionality of the Y2Si2O7 fiber coating was investigated. The minicomposites oxidized at 1000 °C for 10 h retained 100 % of their unoxidized strength, and those oxidized for 50 and 100 h retained 92 % and 90 % of unoxidized strength, respectively. Strength retention and fiber pullout in both unoxidized and oxidized minicomposites suggests that the Y2Si2O7 interphase was effective in maintaining a weak fiber-matrix interface.  相似文献

In this study, SiC interphase was prepared via a precursor infiltration-pyrolysis process, and effects of dipping concentrations on the mechanical, high-temperature dielectric and microwave absorption properties of the SiCf/SiC/Mu composites had been investigated. Results indicated that different dipping concentrations influenced ultimate interfacial morphology. The SiC interphase prepared with 5 wt% PCS/xylene solution was smooth and homogeneous, and no bridging between the fiber monofilament could be observed. At the same time, SiC interphase prepared with 5 wt% PCS/xylene solution had significantly improved mechanical properties of the composite. In particular, the flexural strength of the composite prepared with 5 wt% PCS/xylene solution reached 281 MPa. Both ε′ and ε′′ of the SiCf/SiC/Mu composites were enhanced after preparing SiC interphase at room temperature. The SiCf/SiC/Mu composite prepared with 5 wt% PCS/xylene solution showed the maximum dielectric loss value of 0.38 at 10 GHz. Under the dual action of polarization mechanism and conductance loss, both ε′ and ε′′ of the SiCf/SiC/Mu composites enhanced as the temperature increased. At 700 °C, the corresponding bandwidth (RL ≤ ?5 dB) of SiCf/SiC/Mu composites prepared with 5 wt% PCS/xylene solution can reach 3.3 GHz at 2.6 mm. The SiCf/SiC/Mu composite with SiC interphase prepared with 5 wt% PCS/xylene solution is expected to be an excellent structural-functional material.  相似文献

The effect of single-layer pyrocarbon (PyC) and multilayered (PyC/SiC)n=4 interphases on the flexural strength of un-coated and SiC seal-coated stitched 2D carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide (Cf/SiC) composites was investigated. The composites were prepared by I-CVI process. Flexural strength of the composites was measured at 1200 °C in air atmosphere. It was observed that irrespective of the type of interphase, the seal coated samples showed a higher value of flexural strength as compared to the uncoated samples. The flexural strength of 470 ± 12 MPa was observed for the seal coated Cf/SiC composite samples with multilayered interphase. The seal coated samples with single layer PyC interphase showed flexural strength of 370 ± 20 MPa. The fractured surfaces of tested samples were analyzed in detail to study the fracture phenomena. Based on microstructure-property relations, a mechanism has been proposed for the increase of flexural properties of Cf/SiC composites having multilayered interphase.  相似文献

To better understand the pyrocarbon (PyC) interphase growth mechanism, a series of experiments was conducted on the PyC deposited on T-300™ and T-700™ carbon fibers by the chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) method. Nine groups of fabrication parameters were used to analyze the effects of deposition temperature, pressure, and residence time on the PyC interphase growth mechanism. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and nanoindentation tests were performed to characterize the microstructures of carbon fibers and PyC interphase. The PyC interphase growth mechanism was discussed, and the relationships between the fabrication parameters, R (C2/C6) value, texture type, and interphase thickness were established through numerical simulations. The hardness and modulus of PyC for T-300™ and T-700™ carbon fibers were measured. The tensile behaviors of C/SiC minicomposites with medium and high textures PyC interphases were analyzed. The C/SiC composite with the medium texture PyC interphase possessed the higher fracture strength and failure strain with a longer fiber pullout length at the fracture surface.  相似文献

SiCf/PyC/SiC and SiCf/BN/SiC mini-composites comprising single tow SiC fibre-reinforced SiC with chemical vapor deposited PyC or BN interface layers are fabricated. The microstructure evolutions of the mini-composite samples as the oxidation temperature increases (oxidation at 1000, 1200, 1400, and 1600?°C in air for 2?h) are observed by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry, and X-ray diffraction characterization methods. The damage evolution for each component of the as-fabricated SiCf/SiC composites (SiC fibre, PyC/BN interface, SiC matrix, and mesophase) is mapped as a three-dimensional (3D) image and quantified with X-ray computed tomography. The mechanical performance of the composites is investigated via tensile tests.The results reveal that tensile failure occurs after the delamination and fibre pull-out in the SiCf/PyC/SiC composites due to the volatilization of the PyC interface at high temperatures in the air environment. Meanwhile, the gaps between the fibres and matrix lead to rapid oxidation and crack propagation from the SiC matrix to SiC fibre, resulting in the failure of the SiCf/PyC/SiC composites as the oxidation temperature increases to 1600?°C. On the other hand, the oxidation products of B2O3 molten compounds (reacted from the BN interface) fill up the fracture, cracks, and voids in the SiC matrix, providing excellent strength retention at elevated oxidation temperatures. Moreover, under the protection of B2O3, the SiCf/BN/SiC mini-composites show a nearly intact microstructure of the SiC fibre, a low void growth rate from the matrix to fibre, and inhibition of new void formation and the SiO2 grain growth from room to high temperatures. This work provides guidance for predicting the service life of SiCf/PyC/SiC and SiCf/BN/SiC composite materials, and is fundamental for establishing multiscale damage models on a local scale.  相似文献

SiC/SiC composites are the ideal candidates for hot-end components in aerospace and other high-tech fields. In recent years, as one type of material with simple structures, mini-composites have been widely used to study or initially verify the properties of ceramic matrix composites (CMC). Nevertheless, attentions were rarely paid on the influence of strain rate on the mechanical properties of mini-composites. In this study, based on mini-SiC/SiC composites, we investigated the effect of the strain rate on their tensile strength, initial tensile modulus, Weibull modulus, and fracture work. Furthermore, the underlying mechanisms were discussed and the exact constitutive model of the as-prepared mini-SiC/SiC composites was constructed according to the Michaelis-Menten and generalized linear models. This work can fill the gaps in the CMC research in some degree and provide a preliminary theoretical basis for the formulation of tensile properties test standards of mini-composites.  相似文献

SiCf/SiC composites with silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) interphase were successfully prepared using silicone resin as interphase precursor for dip-coating process and polycarbosilane as matrix precursor for PIP process assisted with hot mold pressing. The effects of SiOC interphase on mechanical and dielectric properties were investigated. XRD and Raman spectrum results show that SiOC interphase is composed of silicon oxycarbide and free carbon with a relatively low crystalline degree. The surface morphology of SiC fibers with SiOC interphase is smooth and homogeneous observed by SEM. The flexural strength and failure displacement of SiCf/SiC composites with SiOC interphase vary with the thickness of interphase and the maximum value of flexural strength is 289 MPa with a failure displacement of 0.39 mm when the thickness of SiOC interphase is 0.25 µm. The complex permittivity of the composites increases from 8.8-i5.7 to 9.8-i8.3 with the interphase thicker.  相似文献

Unidirectional SiCf/SiC minicomposites with SiC matrix derived by polymer-impregnation pyrolysis (PIP), reinforced with SiC fibers coated with zirconium or hafnium germanate were fabricated. Microdebonding indentation tests for SiCf/SiC composites with one- and multilayered germanate interphase were performed. Interfacial shear stress depending on the number of germanate interfacial layers and morphology was determined. The microstructure of the minicomposites and indented fracture surfaces were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was stated that an increase in the number of interfacial coatings leads to a decrease in the interfacial frictional stress in SiCf/SiC minicomposites with germanate interphases. The key factor of interphase weakening is the formation of a weak interlayer bonding within the interphase but not germanate layered crystal structure itself. Thus, bonding at the fiber/matrix boundary could be regulated by the number of layers of ZrGeO4 or HfGeO4 in the interphase zone.  相似文献

SiC/SiC composites prepared by liquid silicon infiltration (LSI) have the advantages of high densification, matrix cracking stress and ultimate tensile strength, but the toughness is usually insufficient. Relieving the residual microstress in fiber and interphase, dissipating crack propagation energy, and improving the crystallization degree of interphase can effectively increase the toughness of the composites. In this work, a special SiC particles and C (SiCP +C) double-cladding layer is designed and prepared via the infiltration of SiCP slurry and chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) of C in the porous SiC/SiC composites prepared by CVI. After LSI, the SiC generated by the reaction of C with molten Si combines with the SiCP to form a layered structure matrix, which can effectually relieve residual microstress in fiber and interphase and dissipate crack propagation energy. The crystallization degree of BN interphase is increased under the effects of C-Si reaction exotherm. The as-received SiC/SiC composites possess a density of 2.64 g/cm3 and a porosity of 6.1%. The flexural strength of the SiC/SiC composites with layered structure matrix and highly crystalline BN interphase is 577 MPa, and the fracture toughness reaches up to 37 MPa·m1/2. The microstructure and properties of four groups of SiC/SiC composites prepared by different processes are also investigated and compared to demonstrate the effectiveness of the SiCP +C double-cladding layer design, which offers a strategy for developing the SiC/SiC composites with high performance.  相似文献

To improve the oxidation resistance of SiC composites at high temperature, the feasibility of using Ti3SiC2 coated via electrophoretic deposition (EPD) as a SiC fiber reinforced SiC composite interphase material was studied. Through fiber pullout, Ti3SiC2, due to its lamellar structure, has the possibility of improving the fracture toughness of SiCf/SiC composites. In this study, Ti3SiC2 coating was produced by EPD on SiC fiber; using Ti3SiC2‐coated SiC fabric, SiCf/SiC composite was fabricated by hot pressing. Platelet Ti3SiC2 powder pulverized into nanoparticles through high‐energy wet ball milling was uniformly coated on the SiC fiber in a direction in which the basal plane of the particles was parallel to the fiber. In a 3‐point bending test of the SiCf/SiC composite using Ti3SiC2‐coated SiC fabric, the SiCf/SiC composite exhibited brittle fracture behavior, but an abrupt slope change in the strength‐displacement curve was observed during loading due to the Ti3SiC2 interphase. On the fracture surface, delamination between each layer of SiC fabric was observed.  相似文献

Unidirectional SiCf/SiC composites (UD SiCf/SiC composites) with excellent mechanical properties were successfully fabricated by a modified PIP method which involved the preparation of film-like matrix containing carbon layer with a low concentration PCS solution followed by the rapid densification of composites with a high concentration PCS solution. Carbon layers were in-situ formed and alternating with SiC layers in the as-received matrix. The unique microstructure endows the composites with appropriate interfacial bonding state, good load transfer ability of interphase and matrix and load bearing ability of fiber, and great crack deflection capacity, which ensures the synergy of high strength and toughness of composites. It is also found that the fiber volume fraction in the preform makes a non-negligible effect on the distribution of interphase and matrix, of which the reasonable adjustment can be utilized to optimize the mechanical properties of composites. Compared with the composites only using high concentration PCS solution, the UD SiCf/SiC composites prepared by the modified PIP method exhibit superior mechanical properties. Ultrahigh flexural strength of 1318.5 ± 158.3 MPa and fracture toughness of 47.6 ± 5.6 MPa·m1/2 were achieved at the fiber volume fraction of 30%.  相似文献

In this study, B4C–SiC–rGO composites with different SiC contents were prepared by spark plasma sintering at 1800 °C for 5 min under a uniaxial pressure of 50 MPa. The effects of SiC on the microstructures and mechanical properties of the B4C–SiC–rGO composites were investigated. The optimal values for flexural strength (545.25 ± 23 MPa) and fracture toughness (5.72 ± 0.13 MPa·m1/2) were obtained simultaneously when 15 wt.% SiC was added to 5 wt.%–GO reinforced B4C composites (BS15G5). It was found that SiC and rGO inhibited the grain growth of B4C and improved the mechanical properties of the B4C–SiC–rGO composites. The clear and narrow grain boundaries of rGO–B4C and rGO–SiC, as well as the semi-coherent B4C–SiC interface, indicated strong interface compatibility. The twin structures of SiC and B4C observed in the composites improved their fracture toughness. Crack deflection and crack bridging caused by the SiC grains as well as rGO bridging and rGO pull-out were observed on the crack propagation path.  相似文献

The heat-resistance of the Cansas-II SiC/CVI-SiC mini-composites with a PyC and BN interface was studied in detail. The interfacial shear strength of the SiC/PyC/SiC mini-composites decreased from 15 MPa to 3 MPa after the heat treatment at 1500 °C for 50 h, while that of the SiC/BN/SiC mini-composites decreased from 248 MPa to 1 MPa, which could be mainly attributed to the improvement of the crystallization degree of the interface and the decomposition of the matrix. Aside from the above reasons, the larger declined fraction of the interfacial shear strength of the SiC/BN/SiC mini-composites might also be related to the gaps in the BN interface induced by the volatilization of B2O3·SiO2 phase, leading to a significant larger declined fraction of the tensile strength of the SiC/BN/SiC mini-composites due to the obvious expansion of the critical flaws on the fiber surface. Therefore, compared with the CVI BN interface, the CVI PyC interface has better heat-resistance at high temperatures up to 1500 °C due to the fewer impurities in PyC.  相似文献

In this paper, the effect of in situ grown boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) and preparation temperature on mechanical behavior of PIP (Precursor Infiltration and Pyrolysis) SiCf/SiC minicomposites under monotonic and compliance tensile is investigated. In situ BNNTs are grown on the surface of SiC fibers using ball milling–annealing process. Composite elastic modulus, tensile strength, fracture strain, tangent modulus, and loading/unloading inverse tangent modulus (ITM) are obtained and adopted to characterize the mechanical properties of the composites. Microstructures of in situ grown BNNTs and tensile fracture surfaces are observed under scanning electronic microscopic (SEM). For SiCf/SiC minicomposites with BNNTs, the elastic modulus, tensile strength, and fracture strain are all lower than those of SiCf/SiC minicomposites without BNNTs, mainly due to high preparation temperature and the oxidation of the PyC interphase during the annealing process. Tensile stress–strain curves of SiCf/SiC minicomposites with and without BNNTs are predicted using the developed micromechanical constitutive model. The predicted results agreed with experimental data. This work will provide guidance for predicting the service life of SiCf/SiC composite materials and may enable these materials to become a backbone for thermal structure systems in aerospace applications.  相似文献

Electrospun unidirectional SiC fibers reinforced SiCf/SiC composites (e-SiCf/SiC) were prepared with ∼10% volume fraction by polymer infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) process. Pyrolysis temperature was varied to investigate the changes in microstructures, mechanical, thermal, and dielectric properties of e-SiCf/SiC composites. The composites prepared at 1100 °C exhibit the highest flexural strength of 286.0 ± 33.9 MPa, then reduced at 1300 °C, mainly due to the degradation of electrospun SiC fibers, increased porosity, and reaction-controlled interfacial bonding. The thermal conductivity of e-SiCf/SiC prepared at 1300 °C reached 2.663 W/(m∙K). The dielectric properties of e-SiCf/SiC composites were also investigated and the complex permittivities increase with raising pyrolysis temperature. The e-SiCf/SiC composites prepared at 1300 °C exhibited EMI shielding effectiveness exceeding 24 dB over the whole X band. The electrospun SiC fibers reinforced SiCf/SiC composites can serve as a potential material for structural components and EMI shielding applications in the future.  相似文献

A novel method is proposed for fabricating highly oriented carbon fibre reinforced SiC ceramic composites (Cf/SiC) by direct ink writing (DIW). For the first time, the control of carbon fibers’ orientation in DIW was studied by numerical simulation. An interfacial layer was prepared by chemical vapor infiltration (CVI). The microstructure and phase composition of Cf/SiC were studied by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively. The results showed that fibers of different interfacial thicknesses could be obtained effectively by varying the CVI time. The breakage of short fibres remarkably improved the fracture toughness of the parts. The specimens showed excellent mechanical properties with bending strength of 274 ± 13 MPa and fracture toughness of 5.82 ± 0.25 MPa m1/2. This method could be extended to the preparation of other resin and ceramic composites.  相似文献

SiC coatings were successfully synthesized on SiC fibers by precursor infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) method using polycarbosilane (PCS) as precursor. The morphology of as-fabricated coatings was observed by SEM, and its structure was characterized by XRD and Raman spectrum. The SiC fiber reinforced chemical vapor infiltration SiC (SiCf/CVI-SiC) composites with PIP-SiC coatings as interphase were fabricated. And, the effects of PIP-SiC interphase on mechanical properties of composites were investigated. The experimental results point out that the coating is smooth and there is little bridging between fibers. The coating is amorphous with SiC and carbon micro crystals. The flexural strength of composites with and without PIP-SiC interphase is 220 and 100 MPa, respectively. And the composites with PIP-SiC interphase obviously exhibit a toughened fracture behavior. The oxidation resistance of composites with PIP-SiC interphase is much better than that of composites with pyrolytic carbon (PyC) interphase.  相似文献
