Macroporous temperature‐sensitive poly {N‐[3‐(dimethylaminopropyl)] methacrylamide} hydrogels were synthesized by free‐radical crosslinking polymerization of the monomer N‐[3‐(dimethylaminopropyl)] methacrylamide and the crosslinker N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide in aqueous solutions at 22°C. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with a molecular weight of 1000 g/mol was used as the pore‐forming agent during the polymerization reaction. The concentration of PEG in the polymerization solutions was varied between 0 and 18 wt %, whereas the crosslinker (N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide) concentration was fixed at 2 wt % (with respect to the monomer). The effects of the PEG concentration on the thermo‐induced phase‐transition behavior and the chemical structure, interior morphology, and swelling/deswelling kinetics were investigated. Normal‐type hydrogels were also prepared under the same conditions without PEG. An interesting feature of the swelling behavior of both the normal‐type and macroporous hydrogels was the reentrant phase transition, in which the hydrogels collapsed once and reswelled as the temperature was continuously increased. Scanning electron micrographs revealed that the interior network structure of the hydrogels prepared in PEG solutions became more porous with an increase in the PEG concentration in the polymerization solution. This more porous matrix provided numerous water channels for water diffusion in or out of the matrix and, therefore, an improved responsive rate to external temperature changes during the deswelling and swelling processes. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Macroporous poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) hydrogels were synthesized by free‐radical crosslinking polymerization in aqueous solution from N‐isopropylacrylamide monomer and N,N‐methylenebis (acrylamide) crosslinker using poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with three different number‐average molecular weights of 300, 600 and 1000 g mol?1 as the pore‐forming agent. The influence of the molecular weight and amount of PEG pore‐forming agent on the swelling ratio and network parameters such as polymer–solvent interaction parameter (χ) and crosslinking density (νE) of the hydrogels is reported and discussed. Scanning electron micrographs reveal that the macroporous network structure of the hydrogels can be adjusted by applying different molecular weights and compositions of PEG during polymerization. At a temperature below the volume phase transition temperature, the macroporous hydrogels absorbed larger amounts of water compared to that of conventional PNIPA hydrogels, and showed higher equilibrated swelling ratios in aqueous medium. Particularly, the unique macroporous structure provides numerous water channels for water diffusion in or out of the matrix and, therefore, an improved response rate to external temperature changes during the swelling and deswelling process. These macroporous PNIPA hydrogels may be useful for potential applications in controlled release of macromolecular active agents. Copyright © 2006 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A series of thermo‐ and pH‐sensitive poly (N,N‐diethylacrylamide‐co‐acrylic acid) (P(DEA‐co‐AA)) hydrogels were prepared in NaCl aqueous solutions with different concentrations. Swelling and deswelling studies showed that in comparison with conventional P(DEA‐co‐AA) hydrogels (prepared in distilled water), the P(DEA‐co‐AA) hydrogels thus prepared had almost the same volume phase transition temperature (VPTT), but exhibited much faster response rates as the temperature was raised above their VPTT. Besides, the hydrogels prepared by this method had faster response rates in low pH buffer solutions, and the response rates increased with the increased concentration of the NaCl solutions used during the polymerization. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel dual temperature‐ and pH‐sensitive poly(acrylic acid‐co‐N‐isopropylacrylamide), AA/NIPAAm, hydrogels were successfully prepared by chemical crosslinking with crosslinkers. Copolymers of AA/NIPAAm were crosslinked in the presence of different mol % of N,N‐methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) and melamine triacrylamide (MAAm) as crosslinkers by bulk radical polymerization. The resultant xerogels were characterized by extracting the soluble fractions and measuring the equilibrium water content. Lower critical solution transition temperatures (LCST) were measured by DSC. The properties of crosslinked AA/NIPAAm series are evaluated in terms of compositional drift of polymerization, heterogeneous crosslinking, and chemical structure of the relevant components. Soluble fractions of the crosslinked networks were reduced by varying the MAAm and MBA concentrations. The influence of environmental conditions such as temperature and pH on the swelling behavior of these polymeric gels was investigated. The swelling behaviors of the resulting gels show pH sensitivity. The prepared MAAm type AA/NIPAAm hydrogels exhibited a more rapid deswelling rate than MBA type AA/NIPAAm hydrogels in ultra pure water in response to abrupt changes from 20°C to 50°C. The results of this study provide valuable information regarding the development of dual stimuli‐sensitive hydrogels with fast responsiveness. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new strategy was developed to prepare thermo‐ and pH‐sensitive hydrogels by the crosslinking of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) with a biodegradable crosslinker derived from poly(L ‐glutamic acid). Hydrogels were fabricated by exposing aqueous solutions of precursor containing photoinitiator to UV light irradiation. The swelling behaviors of hydrogels at different temperatures, pHs, and ionic strengths were examined. The hydrogels shrank under acidic condition or at temperature above their collapse temperature and would swell in neutral or basic media or at lower temperature. These processes were reversible as the pH or temperature changed. All hydrogels exhibited no weight loss in the simulated gastric fluid but degraded rapidly in the simulated intestinal condition. Bovine serum albumin were used as a model protein drug and loaded into the hydrogels. The in vitro drug release experiment was carried out at different pH values and temperatures. The pH and temperature dependent release behaviors indicated the promising application of these materials as stimuli‐responsive drug delivery vehicles. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. pH‐ and temperature‐responsive interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels based on soy protein and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐co‐sodium acrylate) were successfully prepared. The structure and properties of the hydrogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analyzer. The equilibrium and dynamic swelling/deswelling behaviors and the drug release properties of the hydrogels responding to pH and/or temperature were also studied in detail. The hydrogels have the porous honeycomb structures, good miscibility and thermal stability, and good pH‐ and temperature‐responsivity. The volume phase transition temperature of the hydrogels is ca. 40°C. Changing the soy protein or crosslinker content could be used to control the swelling behavior and water retention, and the hydrogels have the fastest deswelling rate in pH 1.2 buffer solutions at 45°C. Bovine serum albumin release from the hydrogels has the good pH and temperature dependence. The results show that the proposed IPN hydrogels may have potential applications in the field of biomedical materials such as in drug delivery systems. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. pH and temperature responsive nanocomposite hydrogels were synthesized with sodium alginate (NaAlg), N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPA), and nanoclay. The structure, morphology, thermal behavior, and swelling and deswelling behaviors of the hydrogels were studied. The NaAlgm/PNIPA/Clayn hydrogels revealed a highly porous structure in which the pore sizes decreased and the amount of pores increased with increasing the nanoclay content in the hydrogels. PNIPA retained its own characteristics regardless of the amount of NaAlg and nanoclay. The effect of pH and nanoclay content on the swelling and effect of temperature on the deswelling behavior were investigated. The equilibrium swelling ratios of the nanocomposite hydrogels increased with increasing the pH from 2 to 6. The maximum swelling was attained at pH 6. Deswelling increased with increasing the nanoclay content in the hydrogels. The hydrogels were found to be pH and temperature responsive. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. In this article, a series of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)‐based hydrogels were prepared under microwave irradiation using poly(ethylene oxide)‐600 (PEO‐600) as reaction medium and microwave‐absorbing agent as well as pore‐forming agent. All of the temperature measurements, gel fractions, and FTIR analyses proved that the PNIPAM hydrogels were successfully synthesized. Within 1 min, the PNIPAM hydrogel with a 98% yield was obtained under microwave irradiation. The PNIPAM hydrogels thus prepared exhibited controllable properties such as pore size, equilibrium swelling ratios, and swelling/deswelling rates when changing the feed weight ratios of monomer (N‐isopropylacrylamide, NIPAM) to PEO‐600. These properties are well adapted to the different requirements for their potential application in many fields such as biomedicine. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hydrogels consisting of sodium alginate and N‐isopropylacrylamide covalently crosslinked with N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide were prepared. The mixed‐interpenetrated networks obtained were characterized using elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopy, swelling measurements and environmental scanning electron microscopy. The thermo‐ and pH‐responsive properties of these hydrogels were evidenced by their swelling behaviour, which depended also on the amount of crosslinking agent and hydrogel composition. BACKGROUND: Stimuli‐sensitive or intelligent hydrogels have been investigated for many biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. Those hydrogels with dual sensitivity will have more extensive potential applications. The aim of the work presented was to prepare a series of thermo‐ and pH‐sensitive hydrogels based on poly(vinylmethyl ether) (PVME) and carboxymethylchitosan (CMCS). The hydrogels were crosslinked using electron beam irradiation (EB) or using glutaraldehyde (GA) as a crosslinker at room temperature. RESULTS: The structures of the PVME/CMCS hydrogels obtained using the two crosslinking methods are proposed. The effects of component polymer ratio, GA content, irradiation dose, temperature and pH on the swelling behavior of the PVME/CMCS hydrogels were studied. There is a sharp decrease in the swelling ratios when the temperature increases from 25 to 37 °C. At low pH and also at high pH, the hydrogels have a higher swelling ratio; however, deswelling occurs evidently at a pH of around 3. CONCLUSION: The study shows that both EB and GA crosslinked hydrogels are thermo‐ and pH‐ sensitive, simultaneously. Thus, they may be potential candidates for both thermo‐ and pH‐sensitive applications. Copyright © 2009 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Temperature‐sensitive poly[(2‐diethylaminoethyl methacrylate)‐co‐(N,N‐dimethylacrylamide)] [P(DEAEMA‐co‐DMAAm)] hydrogels with five different DMAAm contents were synthesized with and without the addition of sodium carbonate as porosity generator. The synthesized hydrogels were characterized with dry gel density measurements, scanning electron microscopy observation and the determination of swelling ratio. The influence of the pore‐forming agent and content of DMAAm on swelling ratio and network parameters such as polymer–solvent interaction parameter (χ), average molecular mass between crosslinks (M?c) and mesh size (ζ) of the cryogels are reported and discussed. The swelling and deswelling rates of the porous hydrogels are much faster than for the same type of hydrogels prepared via conventional methods. At a temperature below the volume phase transition temperature, the macroporous hydrogels also absorbed larger amounts water compared to that of conventional hydrogels and showed obviously higher equilibrated swelling ratios in aqueous medium. In particular, the unique macroporous structure provided numerous water channels for water diffusion in or out of the matrix and, therefore, an improved response rate to the external temperature changes during the deswelling and swelling processes. These properties are attributed to the macroporous and regularly arranged network of the porous hydrogels. Scanning electron micrographs reveal that the macroporous network structure of the hydrogels can be adjusted by applying porosity generation methods during the polymerization reaction. To prepare intelligent hydrogels with both good mechanical performance and fast response, a series of multinetworked composite hydrogels with pH and thermo‐responsivity were designed and fabricated combining the advantages of both interpenetrating polymer network hydrogels and microgels. To begin with, precipitation polymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide, methacrylic acid and polyethyleneglycol methacrylate was carried out in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) aqueous solution, yielding thermo‐ and pH‐responsive copolymeric microgels. Then glutaraldehyde was added to the obtained microgel dispersion to covalently bond the microgel particles and PVA through acetal reaction, leading to the formation of multinetworked hydrogels with dual responses. The morphology of microgels and the internal microstructure of composite hydrogels were characterized by transmission electron microscope and scanning electron microscope, respectively. The influence of the PVA content and glutaraldehyde dosage on the mechanical behavior of the prepared hydrogels was investigated by means of uniaxial compressive tests. Experimental results reveal that the as‐prepared composite hydrogels exhibit enhanced mechanical performance compared to conventional hydrogels. Investigation onthe swelling and deswelling behaviors shows that they possess good temperature‐ and pH‐sensitivity andswell/deswell more rapidly than conventional hydrogels. POLYM. Hydrogels with environment‐sensitive properties have great potential applications in the controlled drug release field. In this paper, hybrid hydrogels with semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks (semi‐IPNs), composed of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) as the thermo‐sensitive component by in situ polymerization and self‐assembled collagen nanofibrils as the pH‐sensitive framework, were prepared for controlled release of methyl violet as a model drug. From Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, it was indicated that the crosslinking of PNIPAM in the presence of collagen nanofibrils led to the formation of semi‐IPNs with homogeneous porous structure, and the semi‐IPNs showed improved thermal stability and elastic properties compared with the native collagen as determined using differential scanning calorimetry and rheologic measurements. Furthermore, the semi‐IPNs possessed swelling behaviors quite different from those of neat collagen or PNIPAM hydrogel under various pH values and temperatures. Correspondingly, as expected, the drug release behavior in vitro for semi‐IPNs performed variously compared with that for single‐component semi‐IPNs, which revealed the tunable performance of semi‐IPNs for release ability. Finally the thermo‐ and pH‐responsive mechanism of the semi‐IPNs was illuminated to provide guidance for the application of the thermo‐ and pH‐sensitive collagen‐based hybrid hydrogels in controlled drug delivery systems. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Different from the conventional method of developing stimuli‐sensitive textiles by graft copolymerization of environmental responsive polymers onto the fabric, the coating technique was applied to bond temperature‐sensitive hydrogels with cotton fabric through chemical covalent in our work. A temperature‐sensitive linear copolymer of Ntert‐butylacrylamide (NTBA) and acrylamide (AAm) was prepared in methanol. Then, the cotton fabrics were coated using an aqueous solution of this copolymer containing 1,2,3,4‐butanetertracarboxylic acid as a crosslinker and sodium hypophosphite (SHP) as a catalyst, followed by drying and curing. The surface of the cotton fabrics was bonded on more or less coatings of poly (NTBA‐co‐AAm) hydrogels, as verified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy images. The poly(NTBA‐co‐AAm) hydrogels‐coated fabrics exhibited temperature sensitive, and the temperature interval of the deswelling transition was higher than lower critical solution temperature of linear copolymer solution. The coated fabrics presented good water‐impermeable ability because of the swelling of hydrogels bonded, especially when the add‐on was as high as 14.14%. Environmental scanning electron microscopy images revealed that coating hydrogels swelled and covered on the surface as a barrier to prevent water from penetrating once the coated fabric came into contact with water. The findings demonstrate that the temperature‐sensitive hydrogels can be covalently bonded on the cotton fabrics by coating technique and the coated fabrics have potential on immersion fabrics. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. pH and thermo‐responsive graft copolymers are reported where thermo‐responsive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) [poly(NIPAAm), poly A ], poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐co‐2‐(diethylamino) ethyl methacrylate) [poly(NIPAAm‐co‐DEA), poly B ], and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐co‐methacrylic acid) [poly(NIPAAm‐co‐MAA), poly C ] have been installed to benzaldehyde grafted polyethylene glycol (PEG) back bone following introducing a pH responsive benzoic‐imine bond. All the prepared graft copolymers for PEG‐g‐poly(NIPAAm) [ P‐N1 ], PEG‐g‐poly(NIPAAm‐co‐DEA) [ P‐N2 ], and PEG‐g‐poly(NIPAAm‐co‐MAA) [ P‐N3 ] were characterized by 1H‐NMR to assure the successful synthesis of the expected polymers. Molecular weight of all synthesized polymers was evaluated following gel permeation chromatography. The lower critical solution temperature of graft copolymers varied significantly when grafted to benzaldehyde containing PEG and after further functionalization of copolymer based poly(NIPAAm). The contact angle experiment showed the changes in hydrophilic/hydrophobic behavior when the polymers were exposed to different pH and temperature. Particle size measurement investigation by dynamic light scattering was performed to rectify thermo and pH responsiveness of all prepared polymers. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Multifunctional hydrogels based on chitosan–quercetin (CHITQ) conjugate are prepared by a thermo‐induced radical procedure in the presence of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm), acrylamide (AAm), and N,N′‐methylenebis(acrylamide) (MEBA). At first, quercetin (Q) is grafted onto chitosan backbone with a functionalization degree of 275 mg of Q per gram of conjugate, as calculated by 1H‐NMR analyses to impart antioxidant properties to the polysaccharide. Then, a pH and temperature sensitive hydrogel was obtained by involving CHITQ and NIPAAm in the polymerization reaction. The accessibility of phenolic moieties is modified in response to the hydrogel swelling/deswelling, as confirmed by antioxidant tests performed at different temperatures. Dual stimuli‐responsive hydrogels are proposed for the delivery of caffeine as model drug. The release profiles of caffeine depict a system particularly performing as on/off device at acidic pH with excellent applicability prospects.  相似文献

A series of pH‐temperature dual stimuli‐responsive random copolymers poly[N,N‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate‐co‐poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate][poly(DMAEMA‐co‐MPEGMA)] were synthesized by free radical polymerization. The supramolecular hydrogel was formed by pseudopolyrotaxane, which was prepared with the host‐guest interactions between α‐cyclodextrin (α‐CD) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) side chains. Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the structures of the hydrogels. The pH‐temperature dual stimuli responsive properties of the hydrogels were characterized by rheometer. Finally, the controllable drug release behavior of the hydrogel, which was used 5‐fluorouracil (5‐Fu) as the model drug, was investigated at different temperatures and different pH values. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of intelligent hydrogels (poly(NIPA‐co‐GMA‐Dex)) were synthesized by copolymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) and glycidyl methacrylate derivatized dextran (GMA‐Dex) in aqueous solution with different ratios. Their swelling behaviors at different temperatures and in different pH and ionic strengths, and their mechanical properties were studied. It has found that poly(NIPA‐co‐GMA‐Dex) hydrogels are temperature‐, pH‐, and ionic strength‐sensitive associated with the roles of the component PNIPA and GMA‐Dex, respectively. Most significantly, poly (NIPA‐co‐GMA‐Dex) hydrogels exhibit simultaneously good swelling properties and mechanical properties. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The aim of the work reported here was to investigate temperature‐ and pH‐sensitive hydrogels of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and itaconic acid (IA) and their semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks (semi‐IPNs) with varying contents of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). The stimuli responsiveness, swelling behaviour and mechanical properties of the hydrogels and semi‐IPNs were studied in order to investigate the effect of various amounts of PEG. Pulsed‐gradient spin‐echo NMR experiments were carried out to investigate the diffusion process. The pH sensitivity increased with an increasing amount of PEG in the semi‐IPNs, while the overall rate of water uptake was diffusion‐controlled (n < 0.5). For certain PEG contents (5 and 10 wt%), the semi‐IPNs exhibited better mechanical properties than the poly(NIPAM‐co‐IA) copolymer. The calculated values of the self‐diffusion coefficients of water indicated facilitated diffusion of water through the system with increased amounts of PEG, while the self‐diffusion coefficients of a model compound, metoprolol tartrate, showed no significant dependence on the amount of PEG. According to the results obtained and compared to results reported in the literature, the investigated semi‐IPNs may have potential applications in the controlled release of macromolecular active agents such as proteins and peptides.
