A semicustom very large-scale integration (VLSI) course tailored to small university capabilities is described. The novel feature of this course is its close cooperation between the class, a computer-aided design (CAD) manufacturer, and a silicon vendor. The semester-long course includes two 1.5 h lectures per week. The lab was organized on an open-door basis. Students were allowed to enter the lab twenty-four hours per day. The project-oriented course was designed to enable students to: become familiar with the theoretical aspects of custom-specific circuits; go through a VLSI design cycle from specification to silicon layout; learn to use a personal computer-based workstation as a design and simulation tool; become familiar with different approaches to semi-custom design; and work on real designs by cooperating with a local industry 相似文献

The first course in the sequence is intended to satisfy the educational needs of undergraduates whose main focus of interest is not digital system design. The complete sequence is intended to provide a rirm background in microprocessor-based digital system design for students who planned to continue in our graduate program and whose graduate work would involve them in experimental computer science. The three courses are part of a larger commitment to revitalize experimental computer science in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Michigan. This paper describes the design and implementation of a computer-simulated laboratory for use in undergraduate engineering education. The simulated laboratory is implemented in a Windows environment. Several forms of tutorials and other assistance are available to the user to complete the laboratory. Evaluations indicate that when the simulation is used with class lectures, there is a significant improvement in both theory and lab knowledge.
