Teaching and Learning Language as Culture

It＇s important to master a foreign language, English in particular. But the problem is how students should learn in order to communicate well with the native speakers and even become members of the target language community. The author narrates two incidents related to the Chinese study and English study experiences, pointing out that language study can＇t be separated from culture study. In line with the research results by some language experts about culture, language is the carrier of culture as literature is accomplished through languages, therefore language learning and teaching in isolation from culture is impossible. The author argues that language should be taught and learnt in a cultural approach. But as a sword with double blades, cultural approach may lead to culture invasion, culture inequality and the loss of culture diversity.

Classroom adventure on the information superhighway

The article discusses a project which brought the information highway to the children of Black Rock Academy, School 51, which serves a working class district in Buffalo, New York, USA. In the summer of 1997, the author completed her Ph.D course work by participating in a summer study tour to Ghana, West Africa. This inspired her to begin a year long writing assignment with her students in both 7th and 8th grades, to the children in Ghana. She also created a lesson for Black History Month, 1998, in which students wrote poems, letters, stories, and essays about famous African Americans, and researched cultural and historical information about Ghana. The author's students created a lesson on the Web site with the theme of: Black Rock Academy: Reaching Out To The World. They wrote essays about African Americans, provided information about Akan culture on the Web site, and conducted research on the Internet and created links to the most interesting sites. Thus, combining computer technology and language arts pedagogy to facilitate interaction between the students of Black Rock Academy and Agona Duakwa has led to a more intense and meaningful learning experience for the American students and a better understanding of cultural differences and similarities

Conflict and consensus in the Chinese version of Wikipedia

It is not easy to initiate a new language version of Wikipedia. Although anyone can propose a new language version without financial cost, certain Wikipedia policies for establishing a new language version must be followed. Once approved and created, the new language version needs tools to facilitate writing and reading in the new language. Even if a team tackles these technical and linguistic issues, a nascent community has to then develop its own editorial and administrative policies and guidelines, sometimes by translating and ratifying the policies in another language version (usually English). Given that Wikipedia does not impose an universal set of editorial and administrative policies and guidelines, the cultural and political nature of such communities remains open-ended.

Logical Reasoning Ability in Engineering Students: A Case Study

Mathematical logic is one of the scientific foundations of information technology and computer engineering. Therefore, engineering students must be proficient in logical operations. First-year engineering students answered four logical reasoning tasks as part of a larger survey on scientific thinking, producing more incorrect responses than previous studies would have predicted, most notably in international student groups. This paper presents and analyzes these results, and compares and discusses the differences between natural human reasoning and engineering logic. It seeks to explain failures in logical reasoning that occur despite formal training and considers several possible cultural and psychological explanations to this phenomenon. The conclusion highlights the need for stronger emphasis in developing problem-solving and metacognitive skills in engineering education. The importance of fluency in the language of study emerges as a significant factor in learning technical subjects.
