For several applications, it is important to be able to compute the treewidth of a given graph and to find tree decompositions of small width reasonably fast. Good lower bounds on the treewidth of a graph can, amongst others, help to speed up branch and bound algorithms that compute the treewidth of a graph exactly. A high lower bound for a specific graph instance can tell that a dynamic programming approach for solving a problem is infeasible for this instance. This paper gives an overview of several recent methods that give lower bounds on the treewidth of graphs.  相似文献

In this paper a parallel algorithm is given that, given a graph G=(V,E) , decides whether G is a series parallel graph, and, if so, builds a decomposition tree for G of series and parallel composition rules. The algorithm uses O(log \kern -1pt |E|log ^\ast \kern -1pt |E|) time and O(|E|) operations on an EREW PRAM, and O(log \kern -1pt |E|) time and O(|E|) operations on a CRCW PRAM. The results hold for undirected as well as for directed graphs. Algorithms with the same resource bounds are described for the recognition of graphs of treewidth two, and for constructing tree decompositions of treewidth two. Hence efficient parallel algorithms can be found for a large number of graph problems on series parallel graphs and graphs with treewidth two. We introduce nondeterministic graph searching with a controlled amount of nondeterminism and show how this new tool can be used in algorithm design and combinatorial analysis applying to both pathwidth and treewidth. We prove equivalence between this game-theoretic approach and graph decompositions called q -branched tree decompositions, which can be interpreted as a parameterized version of tree decompositions. Path decomposition and (standard) tree decomposition are two extreme cases of q-branched tree decompositions. The equivalence between nondeterministic graph searching and q-branched tree decomposition enables us to design an exact (exponential time) algorithm computing q-branched treewidth for all q≥0, which is thus valid for both treewidth and pathwidth. This algorithm performs as fast as the best known exact algorithm for pathwidth. Conversely, this equivalence also enables us to design a lower bound on the amount of nondeterminism required to search a graph with the minimum number of searchers. Additional support of F.V. We present a general framework for designing fast subexponential exact and parameterized algorithms on planar graphs. Our approach is based on geometric properties of planar branch decompositions obtained by Seymour and Thomas, combined with refined techniques of dynamic programming on planar graphs based on properties of non-crossing partitions. To exemplify our approach we show how to obtain an  $O(2^{6.903\sqrt{n}})We present a general framework for designing fast subexponential exact and parameterized algorithms on planar graphs. This article reports the results of an extensive experimental analysis of efficient algorithms for computing graph spanners in the data streaming model, where an (α,β)-spanner of a graph G is a subgraph SG such that for each pair of vertices the distance in S is at most α times the distance in G plus β. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first computational study of graph spanner algorithms in a streaming setting. We compare experimentally the randomized algorithms proposed by Baswana () and by Elkin (In: Proceedings of the 34th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages and Programming (ICALP 2007), Wroclaw, Poland, pp. 716–727, 9–13 July 2007) for general stretch factors with the deterministic algorithm presented by Ausiello et al. (In: Proceedings of the 15th Annual European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA 2007), Engineering and Applications Track, Eilat, Israel, 8–10 October 2007. LNCS, vol. 4698, pp. 605–617, 2007), designed for building small stretch spanners. All the algorithms we implemented work in a data streaming model where the input graph is given as a stream of edges in arbitrary order, and all of them need a single pass over the data. Differently from the algorithm in Ausiello et al., the algorithms in Baswana () and Elkin (In: Proceedings of the 34th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages and Programming (ICALP 2007), Wroclaw, Poland, pp. 716–727, 9–13 July 2007) need to know in advance the number of vertices in the graph. The results of our experimental investigation on several input families confirm that all these algorithms are very efficient in practice, finding spanners with stretch and size much smaller than the theoretical bounds and comparable to those obtainable by off-line algorithms. Moreover, our experimental findings confirm that small values of the stretch factor are the case of interest in practice, and that the algorithm by Ausiello et al. tends to produce spanners of better quality than the algorithms by Baswana and Elkin, while still using a comparable amount of time and space resources. The paper presents a novel approach to formal algorithm design for a typical class of discrete optimization problems. Using a concise set of program calculation rules, our approach reduces a problem into subproblems with less complexity based on function decompositions, constructs the problem reduction graph that describes the recurrence relations between the problem and subproblems, from which a provably correct algorithm can be mechanically derived. Our approach covers a large variety of algorithms and bridges the relationship between conventional methods for designing efficient algorithms (including dynamic programming and greedy) and some effective methods for coping with intractability (including approximation and parameterization).  相似文献

This paper presents algorithms whose input is an undirected graph, and whose output is a tree decomposition of width that approximates the optimal, the treewidth of that graph. The algorithms differ in their computation time and their approximation guarantees. The first algorithm works in polynomial-time and finds a factor-O(log OPT) approximation, where OPT is the treewidth of the graph. This is the first polynomial-time algorithm that approximates the optimal by a factor that does not depend on n, the number of nodes in the input graph. As a result, we get an algorithm for finding pathwidth within a factor of O(log OPT⋅log n) from the optimal. We also present algorithms that approximate the treewidth of a graph by constant factors of 3.66, 4, and 4.5, respectively and take time that is exponential in the treewidth. These are more efficient than previously known algorithms by an exponential factor, and are of practical interest. Finding triangulations of minimum treewidth for graphs is central to many problems in computer science. Real-world problems in artificial intelligence, VLSI design and databases are efficiently solvable if we have an efficient approximation algorithm for them. Many of those applications rely on weighted graphs. We extend our results to weighted graphs and weighted treewidth, showing similar approximation results for this more general notion. We report on experimental results confirming the effectiveness of our algorithms for large graphs associated with real-world problems.  相似文献

Borodin et al. (Algorithmica 37(4):295–326, 2003) gave a model of greedy-like algorithms for scheduling problems and Angelopoulos and Borodin (Algorithmica 40(4):271–291, 2004) extended their work to facility location and set cover problems. We generalize their model to include other optimization problems, and apply the generalized framework to graph problems. Our goal is to define an abstract model that captures the intrinsic power and limitations of greedy algorithms for various graph optimization problems, as Borodin et al. (Algorithmica 37(4):295–326, 2003) did for scheduling. We prove bounds on the approximation ratio achievable by such algorithms for basic graph problems such as shortest path, weighted vertex cover, Steiner tree, and independent set. For example, we show that, for the shortest path problem, no algorithm in the FIXED priority model can achieve any approximation ratio (even one dependent on the graph size), but the well-known Dijkstra’s algorithm is an optimal ADAPTIVE priority algorithm. We also prove that the approximation ratio for weighted vertex cover achievable by ADAPTIVE priority algorithms is exactly 2. Here, a new lower bound matches the known upper bounds (Johnson in J. Comput. Syst. Sci. 9(3):256–278, 1974). We give a number of other lower bounds for priority algorithms, as well as a new approximation algorithm for minimum Steiner tree problem with weights in the interval [1,2]. S. Semi-supervised graph clustering: a kernel approach   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
Semi-supervised clustering algorithms aim to improve clustering results using limited supervision. The supervision is generally given as pairwise constraints; such constraints are natural for graphs, yet most semi-supervised clustering algorithms are designed for data represented as vectors. In this paper, we unify vector-based and graph-based approaches. We first show that a recently-proposed objective function for semi-supervised clustering based on Hidden Markov Random Fields, with squared Euclidean distance and a certain class of constraint penalty functions, can be expressed as a special case of the weighted kernel k-means objective (Dhillon et al., in Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining, 2004a). A recent theoretical connection between weighted kernel k-means and several graph clustering objectives enables us to perform semi-supervised clustering of data given either as vectors or as a graph. For graph data, this result leads to algorithms for optimizing several new semi-supervised graph clustering objectives. For vector data, the kernel approach also enables us to find clusters with non-linear boundaries in the input data space. Furthermore, we show that recent work on spectral learning (Kamvar et al., in Proceedings of the 17th International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence, 2003) may be viewed as a special case of our formulation. We empirically show that our algorithm is able to outperform current state-of-the-art semi-supervised algorithms on both vector-based and graph-based data sets.  相似文献

We introduce a new class of dynamic graph algorithms called quasi-fully dynamic algorithms , which are much more general than backtracking algorithms and are much simpler than fully dynamic algorithms. These algorithms are especially suitable for applications in which a certain core connected portion of the graph remains fixed, and fully dynamic updates occur on the remaining edges in the graph. We present very simple quasi-fully dynamic algorithms with O(log n) worst-case time per operation for 2-edge connectivity and O(log n) amortized time per operation for cycle equivalence. The former is deterministic while the latter is Monte-Carlo-type randomized. For 2-vertex connectivity, we give a deterministic quasi-fully dynamic algorithm with O(log 3 n) amortized time per operation. The quasi-fully dynamic algorithm we present for cycle equivalence (which has several applications in optimizing compilers) is of special interest since the algorithm is quite simple, and no special-purpose incremental or backtracking algorithm is known for this problem. Abstract. We present a new approach for designing external graph algorithms and use it to design simple, deterministic and randomized external algorithms for computing connected components, minimum spanning forests, bottleneck minimum spanning forests, maximal independent sets (randomized only), and maximal matchings in undirected graphs. Our I/ O bounds compete with those of previous approaches. We also introduce a semi-external model, in which the vertex set but not the edge set of a graph fits in main memory. In this model we give an improved connected components algorithm, using new results for external grouping and sorting with duplicates. Unlike previous approaches, ours is purely functional—without side effects—and is thus amenable to standard checkpointing and programming language optimization techniques. This is an important practical consideration for applications that may take hours to run.  相似文献

In this paper we present a new technique for computing lower bounds for graph treewidth. Our technique is based on the fact that the treewidth of a graph G is the maximum order of a bramble of G minus one. We give two algorithms: one for general graphs, and one for planar graphs. The algorithm for planar graphs is shown to give a lower bound for both the treewidth and branchwidth that is at most a constant factor away from the optimum. For both algorithms, we report on extensive computational experiments that show that the algorithms often give excellent lower bounds, in particular when applied to (close to) planar graphs. Covering problems are fundamental classical problems in optimization, computer science and complexity theory. Typically an input to these problems is a family of sets over a finite universe and the goal is to cover the elements of the universe with as few sets of the family as possible. The variations of covering problems include well-known problems like Set Cover, Vertex Cover, Dominating Set and Facility Location to name a few. Recently there has been a lot of study on partial covering problems, a natural generalization of covering problems. Here, the goal is not to cover all the elements but to cover the specified number of elements with the minimum number of sets. In this paper we study partial covering problems in graphs in the realm of parameterized complexity. Classical (non-partial) version of all these problems has been intensively studied in planar graphs and in graphs excluding a fixed graph H as a minor. However, the techniques developed for parameterized version of non-partial covering problems cannot be applied directly to their partial counterparts. The approach we use, to show that various partial covering problems are fixed parameter tractable on planar graphs, graphs of bounded local treewidth and graph excluding some graph as a minor, is quite different from previously known techniques. The main idea behind our approach is the concept of implicit branching. We find implicit branching technique to be interesting on its own and believe that it can be used for some other problems.  相似文献

The longest path problem is the problem of finding a path of maximum length in a graph. Polynomial solutions for this problem are known only for small classes of graphs, while it is NP-hard on general graphs, as it is a generalization of the Hamiltonian path problem. Motivated by the work of Uehara and Uno (Proc. of the 15th Annual International Symp. on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC), LNCS, vol. 3341, pp. 871–883, 2004), where they left the longest path problem open for the class of interval graphs, in this paper we show that the problem can be solved in polynomial time on interval graphs. The proposed algorithm uses a dynamic programming approach and runs in O(n 4) time, where n is the number of vertices of the input graph.  相似文献

We describe an O(n 3/log n)-time algorithm for the all-pairs-shortest-paths problem for a real-weighted directed graph with n vertices. This slightly improves a series of previous, slightly subcubic algorithms by Fredman (SIAM J. Comput. 5:49–60, 1976), Takaoka (Inform. Process. Lett. 43:195–199, 1992), Dobosiewicz (Int. J. Comput. Math. 32:49–60, 1990), Han (Inform. Process. Lett. 91:245–250, 2004), Takaoka (Proc. 10th Int. Conf. Comput. Comb., Lect. Notes Comput. Constraint Programming (CP) offers a rich modeling language of constraints embedding efficient algorithms to handle complex and heterogeneous combinatorial problems. To solve hard combinatorial optimization problems using CP alone or hybrid CP-ILP decomposition methods, costs also have to be taken into account within the propagation process. Optimization constraints, with their cost-based filtering algorithms, aim to apply inference based on optimality rather than feasibility. This paper introduces a new optimization constraint, cost-regular. Its filtering algorithm is based on the computation of shortest and longest paths in a layered directed graph. The support information is also used to guide the search for solutions. We believe this constraint to be particularly useful in modeling and solving Column Generation subproblems and evaluate its behaviour on complex Employee Timetabling Problems through a flexible CP-based column generation approach. Computational results on generated benchmark sets and on a complex real-world instance are given.A preliminary version of this paper appeared as [7]. Recently, it has been proven that evolutionary algorithms produce good results for a wide range of combinatorial optimization problems. Some of the considered problems are tackled by evolutionary algorithms that use a representation which enables them to construct solutions in a dynamic programming fashion. We take a general approach and relate the construction of such algorithms to the development of algorithms using dynamic programming techniques. Thereby, we give general guidelines on how to develop evolutionary algorithms that have the additional ability of carrying out dynamic programming steps. Finally, we show that for a wide class of the so-called DP-benevolent problems (which are known to admit FPTAS) there exists a fully polynomial-time randomized approximation scheme based on an evolutionary algorithm.  相似文献

A graph G is said to be a bicluster graph if G is a disjoint union of bicliques (complete bipartite subgraphs), and a cluster graph if G is a disjoint union of cliques (complete subgraphs). In this work, we study the parameterized versions of the NP-hard Bicluster Graph Editing and Cluster Graph Editing problems. The former consists of obtaining a bicluster graph by making the minimum number of modifications in the edge set of an input bipartite graph. When at most k modifications are allowed (Bicluster(k) Graph Editing problem), this problem is FPT, and can be solved in O(4 k nm) time by a standard search tree algorithm. We develop an algorithm of time complexity O(4 k +n+m), which uses a strategy based on modular decomposition techniques; we slightly generalize the original problem as the input graph is not necessarily bipartite. The algorithm first builds a problem kernel with O(k 2) vertices in O(n+m) time, and then applies a bounded search tree. We also show how this strategy based on modular decomposition leads to a new way of obtaining a problem kernel with O(k 2) vertices for the Cluster(k) Graph Editing problem, in O(n+m) time. This problem consists of obtaining a cluster graph by modifying at most k edges in an input graph. A previous FPT algorithm of time O(1.92 k +n 3) for this problem was presented by Gramm et al. (Theory Comput. Syst. 38(4), 373–392, 2005, Algorithmica 39(4), 321–347, 2004). In their solution, a problem kernel with O(k 2) vertices is built in O(n 3) time.  相似文献

The goal of the Cluster Editing problem is to make the fewest changes to the edge set of an input graph such that the resulting graph is a disjoint union of cliques. This problem is NP-complete but recently, several parameterized algorithms have been proposed. In this paper, we present a number of surprisingly simple search tree algorithms for Weighted Cluster Editing assuming that edge insertion and deletion costs are positive integers. We show that the smallest search tree has size O(1.82k) for edit cost k, resulting in the currently fastest parameterized algorithm, both for this problem and its unweighted counterpart. We have implemented and compared our algorithms, and achieved promising results.1  相似文献
