Many recent database applications need to deal with similarity queries. For such applications, it is important to measure the similarity between two objects using the distance between them. Focusing on this problem, this paper proposes the slim-tree, a new dynamic tree for organizing metric data sets in pages of fixed size. The slim-tree uses the triangle inequality to prune the distance calculations that are needed to answer similarity queries over objects in metric spaces. The proposed insertion algorithm uses new policies to select the nodes where incoming objects are stored. When a node overflows, the slim-tree uses a minimal spanning tree to help with the splitting. The new insertion algorithm leads to a tree with high storage utilization and improved query performance. The slim-tree is a metric access method that tackles the problem of overlaps between nodes in metric spaces and that allows one to minimize the overlap. The proposed "fat-factor" is a way to quantify whether a given tree can be improved and also to compare two trees. We show how to use the fat-factor to achieve accurate estimates of the search performance and also how to improve the performance of a metric tree through the proposed "slim-down" algorithm. This paper also presents a new tool in the slim-tree's arsenal of resources, aimed at visualizing it. Visualization is a powerful tool for interactive data mining and for the visual tracking of the behavior of a tree under updates. Finally, we present a formula to estimate the number of disk accesses in range queries. Results from experiments with real and synthetic data sets show that the new slim-tree algorithms lead to performance improvements. These results show that the slim-tree outperforms the M-tree by up to 200% for range queries. For insertion and splitting, the minimal-spanning-tree-based algorithm achieves up to 40 times faster insertions. We observed improvements of up to 40% in range queries after applying the slim-down algorithm

Text search is a classical problem in Computer Science, with many data-intensive applications. For this problem, suffix arrays are among the most widely known and used data structures, enabling fast searches for phrases, terms, substrings and regular expressions in large texts. Potential application domains for these operations include large-scale search services, such as Web search engines, where it is necessary to efficiently process intensive-traffic streams of on-line queries. This paper proposes strategies to enable such services by means of suffix arrays. We introduce techniques for deploying suffix arrays on clusters of distributed-memory processors and then study the processing of multiple queries on the distributed data structure. Even though the cost of individual search operations in sequential (non-distributed) suffix arrays is low in practice, the problem of processing multiple queries on distributed-memory systems, so that hardware resources are used efficiently, is relevant to services aimed at achieving high query throughput at low operational costs. Our theoretical and experimental performance studies show that our proposals are suitable solutions for building efficient and scalable on-line search services based on suffix arrays.

Search engine users often encounter the difficulty of phrasing the precise query that could lead to satisfactory search results. Query recommendation is considered an effective assistant in enhancing keyword-based queries in search engines and Web search software. In this paper, we present a Query-URL Bipartite based query reCommendation approach, called QUBiC. It utilizes the connectivity of a query-URL bipartite graph to recommend related queries and can significantly improve the accuracy and effectiveness of personalized query recommendation systems comparing with the conventional pairwise similarity based approach. The main contribution of the QUBiC approach is its three-phase framework for personalized query recommendations. The first phase is the preparation of queries and their search results returned by a search engine, which generates a historical query-URL bipartite collection. The second phase is the discovery of similar queries by extracting a query affinity graph from the bipartite graph, instead of operating on the original bipartite graph directly using biclique-based approach or graph clustering. The query affinity graph consists of only queries as its vertices and its edges are weighted according to a query-URL vector based similarity (dissimilarity) measure. The third phase is the ranking of similar queries. We devise a novel rank mechanism for ordering the related queries based on the merging distances of a hierarchical agglomerative clustering (HAC). By utilizing the query affinity graph and the HAC-based ranking, we are able to capture the propagation of similarity from query to query by inducing an implicit topical relatedness between queries. Furthermore, the flexibility of the HAC strategy makes it possible for users to interactively participate in the query recommendation process, and helps to bridge the gap between the determinacy of actual similarity values and the indeterminacy of users’ information needs, allowing the lists of related queries to be changed from user to user and query to query, thus adaptively recommending related queries on demand. Our experimental evaluation results show that the QUBiC approach is highly efficient and more effective compared to the conventional query recommendation systems, yielding about 13.3 % as the most improvement in terms of precision.

As more and more information is captured and stored in digital form, many techniques and systems have been developed for indexing and retrieval of text documents, audio, images, and video. The retrieval is normally based on similarities between extracted feature vectors of the query and stored items. Feature vectors are usually multidimensional. When the number of stored objects and/or the number of dimensions of the feature vectors are large, it will be too slow to linearly search all stored feature vectors to find those that satisfy the query criteria. Techniques and data structures are thus required to organize feature vectors and manage the search process so that objects relevant to the query can be located quickly. This paper provides a survey of these techniques and data structures.

Similarity search is one of the critical issues in many applications. When using all attributes of objects to determine their similarity, most prior similarity search algorithms are easily influenced by a few attributes with high dissimilarity. The frequent k-n-match query is proposed to overcome the above problem. However, the prior algorithm to process frequent k-n-match queries is designed for static data, whose attributes are fixed, and is not suitable for dynamic data. Thus, we propose in this paper two schemes to process continuous frequent k-n-match queries over dynamic data. First, the concept of safe region is proposed and four formulae are devised to compute safe regions. Then, scheme CFKNMatchAD-C is developed to speed up the process of continuous frequent k-n-match queries by utilizing safe regions to avoid unnecessary query re-evaluations. To reduce the amount of data transmitted by networked data sources, scheme CFKNMatchAD-C also uses safe regions to eliminate transmissions of unnecessary data updates which will not affect the results of queries. Moreover, for large-scale environments, we further propose scheme CFKNMatchAD-D by extending scheme CFKMatchAD-C to employ multiple servers to process continuous frequent k-n-match queries. Experimental results show that scheme CFKNMatchAD-C and scheme CFKNMatchAD-D outperform the prior algorithm in terms of average response time and the amount of produced network traffic.

Similarity search aims to find all objects similar to a query object. Typically, some base similarity measures for the different properties of the objects are defined, and light-weight similarity indexes for these measures are built. A query plan specifies which similarity indexes to use with which similarity thresholds and how to combine the results. Previous work creates only a single, static query plan to be used by all queries. In contrast, our approach creates a new plan for each query.

The architectural choices underlying Linked Data have led to a compendium of data sources which contain both duplicated and fragmented information on a large number of domains. One way to enable non-experts users to access this data compendium is to provide keyword search frameworks that can capitalize on the inherent characteristics of Linked Data. Developing such systems is challenging for three main reasons. First, resources across different datasets or even within the same dataset can be homonyms. Second, different datasets employ heterogeneous schemas and each one may only contain a part of the answer for a certain user query. Finally, constructing a federated formal query from keywords across different datasets requires exploiting links between the different datasets on both the schema and instance levels. We present Sina, a scalable keyword search system that can answer user queries by transforming user-supplied keywords or natural-languages queries into conjunctive SPARQL queries over a set of interlinked data sources. Sina uses a hidden Markov model to determine the most suitable resources for a user-supplied query from different datasets. Moreover, our framework is able to construct federated queries by using the disambiguated resources and leveraging the link structure underlying the datasets to query. We evaluate Sina over three different datasets. We can answer 25 queries from the QALD-1 correctly. Moreover, we perform as well as the best question answering system from the QALD-3 competition by answering 32 questions correctly while also being able to answer queries on distributed sources. We study the runtime of SINA in its mono-core and parallel implementations and draw preliminary conclusions on the scalability of keyword search on Linked Data.

Metric databases are databases where a metric distance function is defined for pairs of database objects. In such databases, similarity queries in the form of range queries or k-nearest-neighbor queries are the most important query types. In traditional query processing, single queries are issued independently by different users. In many data mining applications, however, the database is typically explored by iteratively asking similarity queries for answers of previous similarity queries. We introduce a generic scheme for such data mining algorithms and we investigate two orthogonal approaches, reducing I/O cost as well as CPU cost, to speed-up the processing of multiple similarity queries. The proposed techniques apply to any type of similarity query and to an implementation based on an index or using a sequential scan. Parallelization yields an additional impressive speed-up. An extensive performance evaluation confirms the efficiency of our approach

SOH(SQL over HDFS)系统通常将数据存储于分布式文件系统HDFS中,采用Map/Reduce或分布式查询引擎来处理查询任务。

Many modern applications in diverse fields demand the efficient manipulation of very large multidimensional datasets. It is evident, that efficient and effective query processing techniques need to be developed, in order to provide acceptable response times in query processing. In this paper, we study the processing of similarity nearest neighbor queries in large distributed multidimensional databases, where objects are represented as vectors in a vector space, and are distributed in a multi-computer environment. The departure from the centralized case embodies a number of advantages and (unfortunately) a number of difficulties that need to be successfully overcome. In this perspective, four query evaluation strategies are presented, namely Concurrent Processing (CP), Selective Processing (SP), Two-Phase Processing (2PP) and Probabilistic Processing (PRP). The proposed techniques are compared analytically and experimentally, in order to discover the advantages of each one, as well as the best cases where each one should be applied. Experimental results are presented, demonstrating the performance of each method under different parameters values. Also, we investigate the impact of derived data that should be maintained in order to process similarity queries efficiently.

Management of large quantities of complex data is essential in many advanced application areas. Object-oriented (OO) database management system have been developed to effectively model and process the complex domain knowledge. They have been shown to outperform some existing relational systems. The existing implementations of OO database management systems attempt to improve the efficiency of OO queries by explicitly capturing the relationships among objects. However, the execution of complex queries involving the retrieval of objects from many classes and relationships among them causes the existing system to operate inefficiently. In this paper, we present parallel algorithms for the processing of queries against a large OO database. The algorithms are based on a closed model of query processing pattern-based access instead of the conventional value-based access. During processing, the algorithms avoid the execution of time-consuming join operations by making use of the explicitly stored object associations. Generation of large quantities of temporary data is avoided by marking objects using their identifiers and by employing a two-phase query processing strategy. A query is processed by concurrent multiple waves, thereby improving parallelism avoiding the complexities introduced in their sequential implementation. The correctness and the performance of the parallel algorithms have been tested and analyzed by running parallel programs on a 32-node transputer based parallel machine designed and developed at the IBM Research Center at Yorktown Heights, New York. Benchmark queries of different semantic complexities are generated, and their performance is analyzed for various data and query parameters

In this paper, we propose an efficient solution for processing continuous range spatial keyword queries over moving spatio-textual objects (namely, CRSK-mo queries). Major challenges in efficient processing of CRSK-mo queries are as follows: (i) the query range is determined based on both spatial proximity and textual similarity; thus a straightforward spatial proximity based pruning of the search space is not applicable as any object far from a query location with a high textual similarity score can still be the answer (and vice versa), (ii) frequent location updates may invalidate a query result, and thus require frequent re-computing of the result set for any object updates. To address these challenges, the key idea of our approach is to exploit the spatial and textual upper bounds between queries and objects to form safe zones (at the client-side) and buffer regions (at the server-side), and then use these bounds to quickly prune objects and queries through smart in-memory data structures. We conduct extensive experiments with a synthetic dataset that verify the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed algorithm.

Range and nearest neighbor queries are the most common types of spatial queries, which have been investigated extensively in the last decades due to its broad range of applications. In this paper, we study this problem in the context of fuzzy objects that have indeterministic boundaries. Fuzzy objects play an important role in many areas, such as biomedical image databases and GIS communities. Existing research on fuzzy objects mainly focuses on modeling basic fuzzy object types and operations, leaving the processing of more advanced queries largely untouched. In this paper, we propose two new kinds of spatial queries for fuzzy objects, namely single threshold query and continuous threshold query, to determine the query results which qualify at a certain probability threshold and within a probability interval, respectively. For efficient single threshold query processing, we optimize the classical R-tree-based search algorithm by deriving more accurate approximations for the distance function between fuzzy objects and the query object. To enhance the performance of continuous threshold queries, effective pruning rules are developed to reduce the search space and speed up the candidate refinement process. The efficiency of our proposed algorithms as well as the optimization techniques is verified with an extensive set of experiments using both synthetic and real datasets.

Approximation-Based Similarity Search for 3-D Surface Segments
The issue of finding similar 3-D surface segments arises in many recent applications of spatial database systems, such as molecular biology, medical imaging, CAD, and geographic information systems. Surface segments being similar in shape to a given query segment are to be retrieved from the database. The two main questions are how to define shape similarity and how to efficiently execute similarity search queries. We propose a new similarity model based on shape approximation by multi-parametric surface functions that are adaptable to specific application domains. We then define shape similarity of two 3-D surface segments in terms of their mutual approximation errors. Applying the multi-step query processing paradigm, we propose algorithms to efficiently support complex similarity search queries in large spatial databases. A new query type, called the ellipsoid query, is utilized in the filter step. Ellipsoid queries, being specified by quadratic forms, represent a general concept for similarity search. Our major contribution is the introduction of efficient algorithms to perform ellipsoid queries on multidimensional index structures. Experimental results on a large 3-D protein database containing 94,000 surface segments demonstrate the successful application and the high performance of our method.

Spatial range query is one of the most common queries in spatial databases, where a user invokes a query to find all the surrounding interest objects. Most studies in range search consider Euclidean distances to retrieve the result in low cost, but with poor accuracy (i.e., Euclidean distance less than or equal network distance). Thus, researchers show that range search in network distance retrieves the results with high accuracy but with a vast amount of network distance computations. However, both of these techniques retrieve all objects in a given radius with a high number of false hits. Yet, in many situations, retrieving all objects is not necessary, especially when there are already enough objects closer to the query point. Also, when the radius of the search increases, a demotion in the performance will occur. Hence, approximate results are valuable just as the exact result, and approximate results can be obtained much faster than the exact result and are less costly. In this paper, we propose two approximate range search methods in spatial road network, namely approximate range Euclidean restriction and approximate range network expansion, to reduce the number of false hits and the number of network distance computations in a considerable manner. After the verification, these two methods are shown to be robust and accurate.

Continuous aggregate nearest neighbor queries
This paper addresses the problem of continuous aggregate nearest-neighbor (CANN) queries for moving objects in spatio-temporal data stream management systems. A CANN query specifies a set of landmarks, an integer k, and an aggregate distance function f (e.g., min, max, or sum), where f computes the aggregate distance between a moving object and each of the landmarks. The answer to this continuous query is the set of k moving objects that have the smallest aggregate distance f. A CANN query may also be viewed as a combined set of nearest neighbor queries. We introduce several algorithms to continuously and incrementally answer CANN queries. Extensive experimentation shows that the proposed operators outperform the state-of-the-art algorithms by up to a factor of 3 and incur low memory overhead.

Peer-to-peer systems have been widely used for sharing and exchanging data and resources among numerous computer nodes. Various data objects identifiable with high dimensional feature vectors, such as text, images, genome sequences, are starting to leverage P2P technology. Most of the existing works have been focusing on queries on data objects with one or few attributes and thus are not applicable on high dimensional data objects. In this study, we investigate K nearest neighbors query (KNN) on high dimensional data objects in P2P systems. Efficient query algorithm and solutions that address various technical challenges raised by high dimensionality, such as search space resolution and incremental search space refinement, are proposed. An extensive simulation using both synthetic and real data sets demonstrates that our proposal efficiently supports KNN query on high dimensional data in P2P systems.

Improving the recall of information retrieval systems for similarity search in time series databases is of great practical importance. In the manufacturing domain, these systems are used to query large databases of manufacturing process data that contain terabytes of time series data from millions of parts. This allows domain experts to identify parts that exhibit specific process faults. In practice, the search often amounts to an iterative query–response cycle in which users define new queries (time series patterns) based on results of previous queries. This is a well-documented phenomenon in information retrieval and not unique to the manufacturing domain. Indexing manufacturing databases to speed up the exploratory search is often not feasible as it may result in an unacceptable reduction in recall. In this paper, we present a novel adaptive search algorithm that refines the query based on relevance feedback provided by the user. Additionally, we propose a mechanism that allows the algorithm to self-adapt to new patterns without requiring any user input. As the search progresses, the algorithm constructs a library of time series patterns that are used to accurately find objects of the target class. Experimental validation of the algorithm on real-world manufacturing data shows, that the recall for the retrieval of fault patterns is considerably higher than that of other state-of-the-art adaptive search algorithms. Additionally, its application to publicly available benchmark data sets shows, that these results are transferable to other domains.

Rinda, a database processor that accelerates nonindexed relational database queries, is described. Rinda is composed of content search processors and relational operational accelerating processors; the former, search rows stored in disk storage, and the latter sort rows stored in the main memory. The processors connect to a general-purpose host computer with channel interfaces. Performance results show that Rinda executes queries three to 100 times faster then conventional database-management system software in a benchmark system
