We consider the problem of finding a shortest watchman route from which the exterior of a polygon is visible (external watchman route). We present an O (n 4 log logn) algorithm to find shortest external watchman routes for simple polygons by transforming the external watchman route problem to a set of internal watchman route problems. Also, we present faster external watchman route algorithms for special cases. These include optimal O (n) algorithms for convex, monotone, star and spiral polygons and an O (n log logn) algorithm for rectilinear polygons. This work was supported in part by a grant from Texas Instruments, Inc. to S. Efficient polynomial time algorithms are well known for the minimum spanning tree problem. However, given an undirected graph with integer edge weights, minimum spanning trees may not be unique. In this article, we present an algorithm that lists all the minimum spanning trees included in the graph. The computational complexity of the algorithm is O(N(mn+n 2 log n)) in time and O(m) in space, where n, m and N stand for the number of nodes, edges and minimum spanning trees, respectively. Next, we explore some properties of cut-sets, and based on these we construct an improved algorithm, which runs in O(N m log n) time and O(m) space. These algorithms are implemented in C language, and some numerical experiments are conducted for planar as well as complete graphs with random edge weights.  相似文献

This paper presents a parallel algorithm that approximates the surface of an object from a collection of its planar contours. Such a reconstruction has wide applications in such diverse fields as biological research, medical diagnosis and therapy, architecture, automobile and ship design, and solid modeling. The surface reconstruction problem is transformed into the problem of finding a minimum-cost acceptable path on a toroidal grid graph, where each horizontal and each vertical edge have the same orientation. An acceptable path is closed path that makes a complete horizontal and vertical circuit. We exploit the structure of this graph to develop efficient parallel algorithms for a message-passing computer. Givenp processors and anm byn toroidal graph, our algorithm will find the minimum cost acceptable path inO(mn log(m)/p) steps, ifp =O(mn/((m + n) log(mn/(m + n)))), which is an optimal speedup. We also show that the algorithm will sendO(p 2(m + n)) messages. The algorithm has a linear topology, so it is easy to embed the algorithm in common multiprocessor architectures.  相似文献

Algorithms for a Class of Isotonic Regression Problems   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The isotonic regression problem has applications in statistics, operations research, and image processing. In this paper a general framework for the isotonic regression algorithm is proposed. Under this framework, we discuss the isotonic regression problem in the case where the directed graph specifying the order restriction is a directed tree with n vertices. A new algorithm is presented for this case, which can be regarded as a generalization of the PAV algorithm of Ayer et al. Using a simple tree structure such as the binomial heap, the algorithm can be implemented in O(n log n) time, improving the previously best known O(n 2 ) time algorithm. We also present linear time algorithms for special cases where the directed graph is a path or a star. Received September 2, 1997; revised January 2, 1998, and February 16, 1998.  相似文献

We consider the problem of generating random permutations with uniform distribution. That is, we require that for an arbitrary permutation π of n elements, with probability 1/n! the machine halts with the i th output cell containing π(i) , for 1 ≤ i ≤ n . We study this problem on two models of parallel computations: the CREW PRAM and the EREW PRAM. The main result of the paper is an algorithm for generating random permutations that runs in O(log log n) time and uses O(n 1+o(1) ) processors on the CREW PRAM. This is the first o(log n) -time CREW PRAM algorithm for this problem. On the EREW PRAM we present a simple algorithm that generates a random permutation in time O(log n) using n processors and O(n) space. This algorithm outperforms each of the previously known algorithms for the exclusive write PRAMs. The common and novel feature of both our algorithms is first to design a suitable random switching network generating a permutation and then to simulate this network on the PRAM model in a fast way. Given a set of n intervals representing an interval graph, the problem of finding a maximum matching between pairs of disjoint (nonintersecting) intervals has been considered in the sequential model. In this paper we present parallel algorithms for computing maximum cardinality matchings among pairs of disjoint intervals in interval graphs in the EREW PRAM and hypercube models. For the general case of the problem, our algorithms compute a maximum matching in O( log 3 n) time using O(n/ log 2 n) processors on the EREW PRAM and using n processors on the hypercubes. For the case of proper interval graphs, our algorithm runs in O( log n ) time using O(n) processors if the input intervals are not given already sorted and using O(n/ log n ) processors otherwise, on the EREW PRAM. On n -processor hypercubes, our algorithm for the proper interval case takes O( log n log log n ) time for unsorted input and O( log n ) time for sorted input. Our parallel results also lead to optimal sequential algorithms for computing maximum matchings among disjoint intervals. In addition, we present an improved parallel algorithm for maximum matching between overlapping intervals in proper interval graphs. Received November 20, 1995; revised September 3, 1998.  相似文献

Minimizing Makespan in Batch Machine Scheduling   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
We study the scheduling of a set of n jobs, each characterized by a release (arrival) time and a processing time, for a batch processing machine capable of running at most B jobs at a time. We obtain an O(n log n)-time algorithm when B is unbounded. When there are only m distinct release times and the inputs are integers, we obtain an O(n(BRmax)m-1(2/m)m-3)-time algorithm where Rmax is the difference between the maximum and minimum release times. When there are k distinct processing times and m release times, we obtain an O(n log m + kk+2 Bk+1 m2 log m)-time algorithm. We obtain even better algorithms for m=2 and for k=1. These algorithms improve most of the corresponding previous algorithms for the respective special cases and lead to improved approximation schemes for the general problem.  相似文献

Parallel algorithms for the problems of selection and searching on sorted matrices are formulated. The selection algorithm takesO(lognlog lognlog*n) time withO(n/lognlog*n) processors on an EREW PRAM. This algorithm can be generalized to solve the selection problem on a set of sorted matrices. The searching algorithm takesO(log logn) time withO(n/log logn) processors on a Common CRCW PRAM, which is optimal. We show that no algorithm using at mostnlogcnprocessors,c≥ 1, can solve the matrix search problem in time faster than Ω(log logn) and that Ω(logn) steps are needed to solve this problem on any model that does not allow concurrent writes.  相似文献

This paper studies vehicle routing problems on asymmetric metrics. Our starting point is the directed k-TSP problem: given an asymmetric metric (V,d), a root rV and a target k≤|V|, compute the minimum length tour that contains r and at least k other vertices. We present a polynomial time O(\fraclog2 nloglogn·logk)O(\frac{\log^{2} n}{\log\log n}\cdot\log k)-approximation algorithm for this problem. We use this algorithm for directed k-TSP to obtain an O(\fraclog2 nloglogn)O(\frac{\log^{2} n}{\log\log n})-approximation algorithm for the directed orienteering problem. This answers positively, the question of poly-logarithmic approximability of directed orienteering, an open problem from Blum et al. (SIAM J. Comput. 37(2):653–670, 2007). The previously best known results were quasi-polynomial time algorithms with approximation guarantees of O(log 2 k) for directed k-TSP, and O(log n) for directed orienteering (Chekuri and Pal in IEEE Symposium on Foundations in Computer Science, pp. 245–253, 2005). Using the algorithm for directed orienteering within the framework of Blum et al. (SIAM J. Comput. 37(2):653–670, 2007) and Bansal et al. (ACM Symposium on Theory of Computing, pp. 166–174, 2004), we also obtain poly-logarithmic approximation algorithms for the directed versions of discounted-reward TSP and vehicle routing problem with time-windows.  相似文献

In this paper we study the problem of polygonal separation in the plane, i.e., finding a convex polygon with minimum number k of sides separating two given finite point sets (k-separator), if it exists. We show that for k = Θ(n), Ω(n log n) is a lower bound to the running time of any algorithm for this problem, and exhibit two algorithms of distinctly different flavors. The first relies on an O(n log n)-time preprocessing task, which constructs the convex hull of the internal set and a nested star-shaped polygon determined by the external set; the k-separator is contained in the annulus between the boundaries of these two polygons and is constructed in additional linear time. The second algorithm adapts the prune-and-search approach, and constructs, in each iteration, one side of the separator; its running time is O(kn), but the separator may have one more side than the minimum.  相似文献

In 1992 F. K. Hwang and J. F. Weng published an O(n 2 ) time algorithm for computing the shortest network under a given full Steiner topology interconnecting n fixed points in the Euclidean plane. The Hwang—Weng algorithm can be used to improve substantially existing algorithms for the Steiner minimum tree problem because it reduces the number of different Steiner topologies to be considered dramatically. In this paper we present an improved Hwang—Weng algorithm. While the worst-case time complexity of our algorithm is still O(n 2 ) , its average time complexity over all the full Steiner topologies interconnecting n fixed points is O (n log n ). This paper presents new algorithms for solving some geometric problems on a shared memory parallel computer, where concurrent reads are allowed but no two processors can simultaneously attempt to write in the same memory location. The algorithms are quite different from known sequential algorithms, and are based on the use of a new parallel divide-and-conquer technique. One of our results is an O(log n) time, O(n) processor algorithm for the convex hull problem. Another result is an O(log n log log n) time, O(n) processor algorithm for the problem of selecting a closest pair of points among n input points.  相似文献

We present efficient algorithms for computing very sparse low distortion spanners in distributed networks and prove some non-trivial lower bounds on the tradeoff between time, sparseness, and distortion. All of our algorithms assume a synchronized distributed network, where relatively short messages may be communicated in each time step. Our first result is a fast distributed algorithm for finding an ${O(2^{{\rm log}^{*} n} {\rm log} n)}We present efficient algorithms for computing very sparse low distortion spanners in distributed networks and prove some non-trivial lower bounds on the tradeoff between time, sparseness, and distortion. All of our algorithms assume a synchronized distributed network, where relatively short messages may be communicated in each time step. Our first result is a fast distributed algorithm for finding an O(2log* n log n){O(2^{{\rm log}^{*} n} {\rm log} n)} -spanner with size O(n). Besides being nearly optimal in time and distortion, this algorithm appears to be the first that constructs an O(n)-size skeleton without requiring unbounded length messages or time proportional to the diameter of the network. Our second result is a new class of efficiently constructible (α, β)-spanners called Fibonacci spanners whose distortion improves with the distance being approximated. At their sparsest Fibonacci spanners can have nearly linear size, namely O(n(loglogn)f){O(n(\log \log n)^{\phi})} , where f = (1 + ?5)/2{\phi = (1 + \sqrt{5})/2} is the golden ratio. As the distance increases the multiplicative distortion of a Fibonacci spanner passes through four discrete stages, moving from logarithmic to log-logarithmic, then into a period where it is constant, tending to 3, followed by another period tending to 1. On the lower bound side we prove that many recent sequential spanner constructions have no efficient counterparts in distributed networks, even if the desired distortion only needs to be achieved on the average or for a tiny fraction of the vertices. In particular, any distance preservers, purely additive spanners, or spanners with sublinear additive distortion must either be very dense, slow to construct, or have very weak guarantees on distortion.  相似文献

Abstract. We present an optimal parallel randomized algorithm for the Voronoi diagram of a set of n nonintersecting (except possibly at endpoints) line segments in the plane. Our algorithm runs in O(log n) time with high probability using O(n) processors on a CRCW PRAM. This algorithm is optimal in terms of work done since the sequential time bound for this problem is Ω(n log n) . Our algorithm improves by an O(log n) factor the previously best known deterministic parallel algorithm, given by Goodrich, ó'Dúnlaing, and Yap, which runs in O( log 2 n) time using O(n) processors. We obtain this result by using a new ``two-stage' random sampling technique. By choosing large samples in the first stage of the algorithm, we avoid the hurdle of problem-size ``blow-up' that is typical in recursive parallel geometric algorithms. We combine the two-stage sampling technique with efficient search and merge procedures to obtain an optimal algorithm. This technique gives an alternative optimal algorithm for the Voronoi diagram of points as well (all other optimal parallel algorithms for this problem use the transformation to three-dimensional half-space intersection).  相似文献

We study deterministic gossiping in ad hoc radio networks with large node labels. The labels (identifiers) of the nodes come from a domain of size N which may be much larger than the size n of the network (the number of nodes). Most of the work on deterministic communication has been done for the model with small labels which assumes N = O(n). A notable exception is Peleg's paper, where the problem of deterministic communication in ad hoc radio networks with large labels is raised and a deterministic broadcasting algorithm is proposed, which runs in O(n2log n) time for N polynomially large in n. The O(nlog2n)-time deterministic broadcasting algorithm for networks with small labels given by Chrobak et al. implies deterministic O(n log N log n)-time broadcasting and O(n2log2N log n)-time gossiping in networks with large labels. We propose two new deterministic gossiping algorithms for ad hoc radio networks with large labels, which are the first such algorithms with subquadratic time for polynomially large N. More specifically, we propose: a deterministic O(n3/2log2N log n)-time gossiping algorithm for directed networks; and a deterministic O(n log2N log2n)-time gossiping algorithm for undirected networks.  相似文献

This paper shows that an N -node AKS network (as described by Paterson) can be embedded in a ( 3N / 2 ) -node twinbutterfly network (i.e., a multibutterfly constructed by superimposing two butterfly networks) with load 1, congestion 1, and dilation 2. The result has several implications, including the first deterministic algorithms for sorting and finding the median of n log n items on an n -input multibutterfly in O ( log n ) time, a work-efficient deterministic algorithm for finding the median of n log 2 n log log n items on an n -input multibutterfly in O (log n log log n ) time, and a three-dimensional VLSI layout for the n -input AKS network with volume O(n 3/2 ) . While these algorithms are not practical, they provide further evidence of the robustness of multibutterfly networks. We also present a separate, and more practical, deterministic algorithm for routing h -relations on an n -input multibutterfly in O(h + log n) time. Previously, only algorithms for solving h one-to-one routing problems were known. Finally, we show that a twinbutterfly, whose individual splitters do not exhibit expansion, can emulate a bounded-degree multibutterfly with (α,β) -expansion, for any α⋅β < 1/4 . Finding a vast array of applications, the list-ranking problem has emerged as one of the fundamental techniques in parallel algorithm design. Surprisingly, the best previously known algorithm to rank a list of n items on a reconfigurable mesh of size was running in O(log n ) time. It was open for more than 8 years to obtain a faster algorithm for this important problem. Our main contribution is to provide the first breakthrough: we propose a deterministic list-ranking algorithm that runs in O(log* n ) time as well as a randomized one running in O(1) expected time, both on a reconfigurable mesh of size . Our results open the door to a large number of efficient list-ranking-based algorithms on reconfigurable meshes. Received February 1997, and in final form February 1998.  相似文献

By restricting weight functions to satisfy the quadrangle inequality or the inverse quadrangle inequality, significant progress has been made in developing efficient sequential algorithms for the least-weight subsequence problem [10], [9], [12], [16]. However, not much is known on the improvement of the naive parallel algorithm for the problem, which is fast but demands too many processors (i.e., it takesO(log2 n) time on a CREW PRAM with n3/logn processors). In this paper we show that if the weight function satisfies the inverse quadrangle inequality, the problem can be solved on a CREW PRAM in O(log2 n log logn) time withn/log logn processors, or in O(log2 n) time withn logn processors. Notice that the processor-time complexity of our algorithm is much closer to the almost linear-time complexity of the best-known sequential algorithm [12].  相似文献
