This article presents studies on plants and their communities through experiments with a multi-agent platform of generic virtual
plants. Based on Artificial Life concepts, the model has been designed for long-term simulations spanning a large number of
generations while emphasizing the most important morphological and physiological aspects of a single plant. The virtual plants
combine a physiological transport-resistance model with a morphological model using the L-system formalism and grow in a simplified
3D artificial ecosystem. Experiments at three different scales are carried out and compared to observations on real plant
species. At the individual level, single virtual plants are grown in order to examine their responses to environmental constraints.
A number of emerging characteristics concerning individual plant growth can be observed. Unifying field observation, mathematical
theory and computer simulation, population level experiments on intraspecific and interspecific competition for resources
are related to corresponding aggregate models of population dynamics. The latter provide a more general understanding of the
experiments with respect to long-term trends and equilibrium conditions. Studies at the evolutionary level aim at morphogenesis
and the influence of competition on plant morphology. Among other results, it is shown how the struggle for resources induces
an arms race that leads to the evolution of elongated growth in contrast to rather ample forms at ground-level when the plants
evolve in isolation.

Within the framework of functional-structural plant models (FSPMs) this paper presents a structural (architectural) plant
model that describes the morphology of spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) plants. A set of equations is introduced and implemented in self-written Matlab® computer programs to calculate the
surface shape of vegetative and generative plant organs. Organ surfaces are approximated as geometrical primitives, visualized
as triangulated surface meshes. The output of the model is a set of triangles that can be associated with geometrical (e.g.
area), topological (e.g. main stem) and physiological (e.g. chlorophyll content) attributes, depending on the measurement
techniques applied. This information is a prerequisite for functional (process) models to compute, e.g., the radiation field
or gas exchange of the respective canopy.

The problem of developing a control law which can force the output of a linear time-varying plant to track the output of a stable linear time-invariant reference model is discussed. It is shown that the standard model reference controller, used for linear time-invariant plants, cannot guarantee zero tracking error in general when the plant is time-varying. A new model reference controller is proposed which guarantees stability and zero tracking error for a general class of linear time-varying plants with known parameters. When the time-varying plant parameters are unknown but vary slowly with time, it is shown that the new controller can be combined with a suitable adaptive law so that all the signals in the closed loop remain bounded for any bounded initial conditions and the tracking error is small in the mean. The assumption of slow parameter variations in the adaptive case can be relaxed if some information about the frequency or the form of the fast varying parameters is available a priori. Such information can be incorporated in an appropriately designed adaptive law so that stability and improved tracking performance is guaranteed for a class of plants with fast varying parameters
