A fundamental investigation of the feasibility of producing lightweight structural panels using ultrasonic consolidation (UC) was undertaken. As a novel solid freeform fabrication technology, UC utilizes both additive ultrasonic joining and subtractive CNC milling to enable the creation of complex aluminum structures with internal geometry at or near room temperature. A series of experiments were performed to understand the issues associated with sandwich structure fabrication using UC, including peel test experiments which evaluated the bond strength for various geometric configurations. The honeycomb lattice was found to offer the best core configuration due to its ability to resist vibration from the sonotrode and provide adequate support for pressure induced by the sonotrode. UC was found to be capable of producing lightweight and stiff structures, including honeycomb and other sandwich panels, without the use of adhesives. An effective manufacturing process plan for fabricating structural panels was developed. A case study was performed on a deck built for the TOROID small satellite spacecraft. The fabricated deck was tested for mechanical integrity. Finally, the cost and benefits of utilizing UC for lightweight structural panels versus traditional fabrication methods are discussed.  相似文献

Composite sandwich constructions are widely employed in various light weight structures, because composite sandwich panels have high specific stiffness and high specific bending strength compared to solid panels. Since sandwich panels are basically unsuited to carry localized loads, the sandwich structure should provide joining inserts to transfer the localized loads to other structures.In this work, the load transfer characteristics of the partial type insert for composite sandwich panels were investigated experimentally with respect to the insert shape. The static and dynamic pull out tests of the composite sandwich panels composed of an aluminum honeycomb core, two laminates of carbon fiber/epoxy composite and aluminum insert, were performed. From the experiments, the effect of the insert shape on the mechanical characteristics of composite sandwich panels was evaluated.  相似文献

为研究等腰梯形蜂窝芯玻璃钢夹芯板面内压缩破坏机制, 利用材料试验机对夹芯板面内压缩性能进行了试验测试, 并开展了模拟研究。结果表明: 夹芯板的面内压缩破坏方式主要有面板折断、夹芯板屈曲失稳和夹芯板中面板与蜂窝芯脱粘3种类型。面板为夹芯板面内压缩的主要承载构件, 蜂窝芯对面板起到固支作用。面板结构参数与材料参数为影响夹芯板面内压缩抗压强度与抗压刚度主要因素, 多数蜂窝芯的结构参数与材料参数对夹芯板面内压缩抗压强度的影响微弱, 而个别蜂窝芯的结构参数对夹芯板面内压缩抗压刚度的影响比较显著。夹芯板体积一定时, 随着蜂窝芯胞体单元数量的增加, 夹芯板面内压缩的抗压强度与抗压刚度逐渐增大。   相似文献

In this study, a monocoque satellite structure composed of many composite sandwich panels, which consist of two carbon fiber/epoxy composite faces and an aluminum honeycomb core, was designed to reduce structural mass and to improve static and dynamic structural rigidity. To join composite sandwich panels with T-shape joints, a new I-shape side insert, which was fixed inside the composite sandwich panel edge with film adhesive, was suggested. The composite sandwich panels were assembled with bolts using the through-the-thickness insert and the I-shape side insert. The flatwise tensile and compressive tests of the composite sandwich panels were performed with respect to the bonding pressure between the composite face and the aluminum honeycomb core to achieve an optimal bonding pressure. To investigate the joint characteristics of the composite faces and the I-shape side insert, cleavage peel tests were performed with respect to the bonding thickness. Also, a finite element model of the composite sandwich T-joint with the I-shape side insert was developed from experimental results of the impulse response tests and composite sandwich T-joint static tests. From the finite element analysis, the structural reliability of the monocoque composite sandwich satellite structure was verified.  相似文献

探索了全厚度缝合复合材料闭孔泡沫芯夹层结构低成本制造的工艺可行性及其潜在的结构效益。选用3 种夹层结构形式, 即相同材料和工艺制造的未缝合泡沫芯夹层和缝合泡沫芯夹层结构及密度相近的Nomex 蜂窝夹层结构, 完成了密度测定、三点弯曲、平面拉伸和压缩、夹层剪切、结构侧压和损伤阻抗/ 损伤容限等7 项实验研究。结果表明, 泡沫芯夹层结构缝合后, 显著提高了弯曲强度/ 质量比、弯曲刚度/ 质量比、面外拉伸和压缩强度、剪切强度和模量、侧压强度和模量、冲击后压缩(CAI) 强度和破坏应变。这种新型结构形式承载能力强、结构效率高、制造维护成本低, 可以在飞机轻质机体结构设计中采用。   相似文献

Recently, the design and the manufacture of light robot end effectors with high stiffness have become important in order to reduce the deflection due to the self-weight and weight of glass panel, a part of LCD, as the size of glass panels as well as robot end effectors increases. The best way to reduce the deflection and vibration of end effectors without sacrificing the stiffness of end effectors is to employ fiber reinforced composite materials for main structural materials because composite materials have high specific stiffness and high damping. In this work, the end effector for loading and unloading large glass panels were designed and manufactured using carbon fiber epoxy composite honeycomb sandwich structures. Finite element analysis was used along with an optimization routine to design the composite end effector. A box type sandwich structure was employed to reduce the shear effect arising from the low modulus of honeycomb structure. The carbon fiber epoxy prepreg was hand-laid up on the honeycomb structure and cured in an autoclave. A special process was used to reinforce the two sidewalls of the box type sandwich structure. The weight reduction of the composite end effector was more than 50% compared to the weight of a comparable aluminum end effector. From the experiments, it was also found that the static and dynamic characteristics of the composite end effector were much improved compared to those of the aluminum end effector.  相似文献

This paper deals with the analysis of the mechanical properties of the core materials for sandwich panels. In this work, the core is firstly a honeycomb and secondly tubular structure. This kind of core materials are extensively used, notably in automotive construction (structural components, load floors...). For this study, three approaches are developed: a finite element analysis, an analytical study and experimental tests. Structural members made up of two stiffs, strong skins separated by a lightweight core (foam, honeycomb, tube...) are known as sandwich panels. The separation of the skins by the core increases the inertia of the sandwich panel, the flexure and shear stiffness. This increase is obtained with a little increase in weight, producing an efficient structure to resist bending and buckling loads. A new analytical method to analyse sandwich panels core will be presented. These approaches (theoretical and experimental) are used to determine elastic properties and ultimate stress. A parameter study is carried out to determine elastic properties as a function of geometrical and mechanical characteristics of basic material. Both theoretical and experimental results are discussed and a good correlation between them is obtained.  相似文献

开展明胶鸟弹撞击复合材料蜂窝夹芯板试验,研究夹芯结构在软体高速冲击下的损伤形式,分析相关因素对结构动态响应结果的影响。通过CT扫描对复合材料蜂窝夹芯板内部进行检测可知,面板出现分层、基体开裂、纤维断裂、凹陷、向胞内屈曲等损伤形式,蜂窝芯出现芯材压溃、与面板脱粘的损伤形式;分析复合材料蜂窝夹芯板后面板的动态变形过程及撞击中心处位移-时间数据可知,复合材料蜂窝夹芯板在撞击过程中出现由全局弯曲变形主导和局部变形主导的两种变形模式;通过对比不同工况下的复合材料蜂窝夹芯板损伤程度可知,复合材料蜂窝夹芯板损伤程度随鸟弹撞击速度的增加而增大;蜂窝芯高度为10 mm的复合材料蜂窝夹芯板较蜂窝芯高度为5 mm的复合材料蜂窝夹芯板的损伤程度大;初始动能较大的球形鸟弹较圆柱形鸟弹对复合材料蜂窝夹芯板造成的冲击损伤程度更大。   相似文献

Metallic sandwich panels with a cellular core such as honeycomb have the capability of dissipating considerable energy by large plastic deformation under impact/blast loading. To investigate the structural response of sandwich panels loaded by blasts, a large number of experiments have been conducted, and the experimental results are reported and discussed in this paper. Quantitative results were obtained based on the measurement in the tests by a ballistic pendulum with corresponding sensors, and then the deformation/failure modes of specimen were classified and analysed systematically. The experimental programme was designed to investigate the effects on the structural response of face-sheet and core configurations, i.e. face-sheet thickness, cell size and foil thickness of the honeycomb, and mass of charge. The experimental data were then compared with the predicted data from finite element simulations, and the results show a good agreement between the experimental and computational studies.  相似文献

根据蜂窝材料压缩力学理论,提出了一种蜂窝材料的结构相似有限元模型构建方法,并在蜂窝材料轴向压缩和夹层结构抗爆炸冲击2种分析工况下对结构相似模型计算分析的等效性进行了验证。结果表明,蜂窝材料的结构相似有限元模型不仅能够描述原蜂窝材料的宏观压缩力学特性,而且可以大幅地提高模型计算效率,为蜂窝材料夹层结构的抗爆炸冲击特性分析与设计优化提供条件。基于该结构相似有限元模型,以最小化蜂窝材料夹层结构的面密度为设计目标,利用自适应响应面方法对夹层结构的主要设计参数进行了优化,在结构的爆炸冲击响应速度峰值不增大的条件下提高了结构的轻量化水平。  相似文献

Fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) composite decks have been increasingly used in highway bridge applications, both in new construction and rehabilitation and replacement of existing bridge decks. Recent applications have demonstrated that FRP honeycomb panels can be effectively and economically used for highway bridge deck systems. This paper is concerned with design modeling and experimental characterization of a FRP honeycomb panel with sinusoidal core geometry in the plane and extending vertically between face laminates. The analyses of the honeycomb structure and components include: (1) constituent materials and ply properties, (2) face laminates and core wall engineering properties, (3) equivalent core material properties, and (4) apparent stiffness properties for the honeycomb panel and its equivalent orthotropic material properties. A homogenization process is used to obtain the equivalent core material properties for the honeycomb geometry with sinusoidal waves. To verify the accuracy of the analytical solution, several honeycomb sandwich beams with sinusoidal core waves either in the longitudinal or transverse directions are tested in bending. Also, a deck panel is tested under both symmetric and asymmetric patch loading. Finite element (FE) models of the test samples using layered shell elements are further used to correlate results with analytical predictions and experimental values. A brief summary is given of the present and future use of the FRP honeycomb panel for bridge decks. The present simplified analysis procedure can be used in design applications and optimization of efficient honeycomb structures.  相似文献

为研究铝合金蜂窝夹层板水下爆炸冲击波载荷作用的动态响应及抗冲击性能,利用非药式水下爆炸冲击波加载装置对气背固支5A06铝合金夹层板及具有相同面密度的单层板进行水下冲击波加载试验。利用高速相机结合三维数字散斑技术(DIC)对夹层板后面板动态响应进行实时测量,获得夹层板气背面受水下冲击波作用的动态响应历程及变形毁伤模式,比较分析铝合金蜂窝夹层板抗冲击防护性能。结果表明,较相同面密度的单层板,蜂窝夹层板受水下冲击波载荷作用的芯层压缩能有效减少气背面板的塑性变形,提高夹层结构整体抗冲击性能。  相似文献

This paper reports on an investigation into the behaviour of circular sandwich panels with aluminium honeycomb cores subjected to air blast loading. Explosive tests were performed on sandwich panels consisting of mild steel face plates and aluminium honeycomb cores. The loading was generated by detonating plastic explosives at a pre-determined stand-off distance. Core height and face plate thickness were varied and the results are compared with previous experiments. It was observed that the panels exhibited permanent face plate deflection and tearing, and the honeycomb core exhibited crushing and densification. It was found that increasing the core thickness delayed the onset of core densification and decreased back plate deflection. Increasing the plate thickness was also found to decrease back plate deflection, although the panels then had a substantially higher overall mass.  相似文献

Two types of experiments were designed and performed to evaluate the adhesive bond in honeycomb sandwich panels. The tensile bond strength between the facesheet and the core was determined through the flatwise tension test. The fracture toughness of the bond line was measured through the double cantilever beam test. Fracture toughness values varied for different facesheet thicknesses and core materials. Toughness was also different for the bag and tool sides of the panels for all specimen types.  相似文献

The dynamic response of honeycomb sandwich panels under aluminum foam projectile impact was investigated. The different configurations of panels were tested, and deformation/failure modes were obtained. Corresponding numerical simulations were also presented to investigate the energy absorption and deformation mechanism of sandwich panels. Results showed that the deformation/failure modes of sandwich panels were sensitive to the impact velocity and density of aluminum foam. When the panel was impacted by the aluminum foam projectile with the back mass of nylon, the “accelerating impact” stage can be produced and may lead to further compression and damage of the sandwich structures.  相似文献

Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sandwich deck panels with sinusoidal core geometry have shown to be successful both in new construction and the rehabilitation of existing bridge decks. This paper is focused on an experimental study of the strength evaluations of a honeycomb sandwich core under out-of-plane compression and transverse shear. The sinusoidal core is made of E-glass Chopped Strand Mat (ChSM) and Polyester resin. The compressive, tensile and shear strengths were first obtained from coupon tests. The out-of-plane compression tests were performed on representative single-cell volume elements of sandwich panels, and the tests included “stabilized” samples to induce compression failure, and “bare” samples to induce local buckling of the core. Finally, four-point bending tests were conducted to study the structural strength behavior under transverse shear. Two types of beam samples were manufactured by orienting the sinusoidal wave either along the length (longitudinal) or along the width (transverse). Both typical shear failure mode of the core material and delamination at the core–facesheet bonding interface were observed for longitudinal samples. The failure for transverse samples was caused by core panel separation. For both single-cell and beam-type specimen tests, the number of bonding layers, i.e., the amount of ChSM contact layer and resin used to embed the core into the facesheet, and the core thickness are varied to study their influence. The experimental results described herein can be subsequently used to develop design guidelines.  相似文献

Periodic cellular metals with honeycomb and corrugated topologies are widely used for the cores of light weight sandwich panel structures. Honeycombs have closed cell pores and are well suited for thermal protection while also providing efficient load support. Corrugated core structures provide less efficient and highly anisotropic load support, but enable cross flow heat exchange opportunities because their pores are continuous in one direction. Recent advances in topology design and fabrication have led to the emergence of lattice truss structures with open cell structures. These three classes of periodic cellular metals can now be fabricated from a wide variety of structural alloys. Many topologies are found to provide adequate stiffness and strength for structural load support when configured as the cores of sandwich panels. Sandwich panels with core relative densities of 2-10% and cell sizes in the millimetre range are being assessed for use as multifunctional structures. The open, three-dimensional interconnected pore networks of lattice truss topologies provide opportunities for simultaneously supporting high stresses while also enabling cross flow heat exchange. These highly compressible structures also provide opportunities for the mitigation of high intensity dynamic loads created by impacts and shock waves in air or water. By filling the voids with polymers and hard ceramics, these structures have also been found to offer significant resistance to penetration by projectiles.  相似文献

The application of biofiber based paper-reinforced polymer (PRP) composites as skin materials for light-weight sandwich panel constructions was explored. Various sandwich panels with PRP composite skins and a commercial resin-impregnated aramid paper honeycomb core of different cell sizes and core heights were fabricated in the laboratory. The effects of honeycomb core height and cell size on the flexural properties of the lab-made sandwich panels were evaluated. The flexural moduli and strengths of the lab-made panels were compared to the reported values for three existing commercial products used for automotive load floor applications. The lab-made PRP composite/honeycomb core sandwich panels had comparable bending rigidity and flexural load bearing capability but lower areal weights when compared to the commercial products suggesting that PRP composites have the potential to be used as an alternative to glass fiber-reinforced polymer composites as skin materials in sandwich panel fabrication.  相似文献

A theoretical solution is obtained to predict the dynamic response of peripherally clamped square metallic sandwich panels with either honeycomb core or aluminium foam core under blast loading. In the theoretical analysis, the deformation of sandwich structures is separated into three phases, corresponding to the transfer of impulse to the front face velocity, core crushing and overall structural bending/stretching, respectively. The cellular core is assumed to have a progressive crushing deformation mode in the out-of-plane direction, with a dynamically enhanced plateau stress (for honeycombs). The in-plane strength of the cellular core is assumed unaffected by the out-of-plane compression. By adopting an energy dissipation rate balance approach developed by earlier researchers for monolithic square plates, but incorporating a newly developed yield condition for the sandwich panels in terms of bending moment and membrane force, “upper” and “lower” bounds are obtained for the maximum permanent deflections and response time. Finally, comparative studies are carried out to investigate: (1) influence of the change in the in-plane strength of the core after the out-of-plane compression; (2) performances of a square monolith panel and a square sandwich panel with the same mass per unit area; and (3) analytical models of sandwich beams and circular and square sandwich plates.  相似文献
