Laboratory and field experiments were carried out along with numerical simulations in this paper to study the effects of porous media on thermal and salt diffusion of the solar ponds. From our laboratory experiments simulating heat transfer inside a solar pond, it is shown that the addition of porous media to the bottom of a solar pond could help enhance its heat insulation effect. The experiment on salt diffusion indicates that the upward diffusion of the salt is slowed down when the porous media are added, which helps maintain the salt gradient. Our field experiments on two small-scaled solar ponds indicate that when porous media are added, the temperature in the lower convective zone (LCZ) of the solar pond is increased. It is also found that the increase in turbidity is repressed by porous media during the replenishment of the salt to the LCZ. Thermal diffusivities and conductivities of brine layers with porous media such as pebble and slag were also respectively measured in this paper based on the unsteady heat conducting principles of a semi-infinite body. These measured thermal properties were then used in our numerical simulations on the effect of porous media on thermal performance of a solar pond. Our simulation results show that brine layer with porous media plays more positive role in heat insulation effect when thermal conductivity of the ground is big. On the other hand, when the ground has a very small thermal conductivity, the performance of solar pond might be deteriorated and total heat storage quantity of solar pond might be reduced by brine layer with porous media.  相似文献

An experimental test rig for solar pond simulation was developed to study the chosen fertiliser salt, Muriate of Potash (MOP) for use in a solar pond under simulated conditions with provisions to vary the heating input and maintain a particular lower convective zone temperature. The performance, in terms of temperature and density profiles, was studied for MOP and was compared with that of sodium chloride and saltless solar ponds for different heating regimes and lower convective zone temperatures. The formation of three zones viz., upper convective zone, nonconvective zone, and lower convective zone was distinct at all heating combinations for both MOP and sodium chloride salts under simulated conditions. The temperature and density gradients were not affected significantly by intermittent no-heating spells of the solar ponds. Maintaining lower convective zone temperature of 70 °C and above led to the initiation of minor internal convective zone under simulated conditions. The temperature decay of lower convective zone (LCZ) was at lesser rate for different LCZ temperatures associated with both the heating regimes, for a MOP pond over a 24 h period of cessation of heating as compared to sodium chloride and saltless ponds.  相似文献

The salt stratified solar pond is found to be a reliable solar collector and storage system. This paper discusses the effect of varying certain design parameters on pond steady-state temperatures. These significant parameters are sizing parameters—pond surface area and depth of the pond; operating parameters—storage volume and the heat extraction fraction; and geo-climatic parameters3s?olar radiation, water table depth and upper convective zone thickness. Studies indicate that there is an optimum depth and storage volume of the pond for each application in terms of temperature and heat load desired.  相似文献

A mathematical model with various parameters such as effective absorptivity-transmitivity product and total heat loss factor, including ground losses and angle of refraction, which are related to the physical properties and dimensions of the pond, is developed to study the thermal behaviour of salt gradient solar ponds at different operational conditions. A linear relation is found between the efficiency of the solar pond and the function (ΔT/H ). The convective heat loss, the heat loss to the atmosphere due to evaporation through the surface of the pond and ground heat losses have been accounted for in finding out the efficiency of the pond. The dependence of the thermal performance of the solar pond on the ground heat losses is investigated and minimized using low cost loose and insulating building materials such as dry dunes and, Mica powder and loose asbestos at the bottom of the pond. The ground heat losses are considerably reduced with the asbestos (loose) and the retention power of solar thermal energy of the pond increases.  相似文献

The mass and energy balances on the upper convective zone, nonconvective zone, and lower convective zone of a saturated solar pond are written to yield a set of nonlinear partial differential equations. These are solved numerically to predict the thermal performance of the pond over a long period of time for various initial and boundary conditions. This model considers external parameters such as hourly variation of incident solar radiation, ambient temperature, air velocity, and relative humidity. Temperature and concentration dependence of density, thermal conductivity, specific heat, and mass diffusivity are taken into account. Heat transfer modes considered between the upper convective zone and the ambient are convection, evaporation, and radiation. Ground heat losses from the lower convective zone are also considered. This model is used to study the development of temperature and concentration profiles inside a saturated solar pond. This model can also be used to predict the long-term performance of a saturated solar pond for various heat extraction temperatures and rates.  相似文献

This paper presents a theoretical analysis of a salt gradient solar pond as a steady state flat plate solar energy collector. We explicitly take into account the convective heat and mass flux through the pond surface and evaluate the temperature and heat fluxes at various levels in the pond by solving the Fourier heat conduction equation with internal heat generation resulting from the absorption of solar radiation as it passes through the pond water. These evaluations, in combination with energy balance considerations, enable the derivation of the expressions for solar pond efficiency of heat collection as well as the efficiency of heat removal. The efficiency expressions are Hottel-Whillier-Bliss type, prevalent for flat plate collectors. Numerical computations are made to investigate the optimization of geometrical and operational parameters of the solar pond. For given atmospheric air temperature, solar insolation and heat collection temperature, there is an optimum thickness of nonconvective zone for which the heat collection efficiency is maximum. The heat removal factor is also similar to that of a flat plate collector and the maximum efficiency of heat removal depends on both the flow rate and the temperature in the nonconvective zone.  相似文献

A parametric study of salt-gradient solar ponds of size less than 100 m2 is presented. The study is based on a dynamic model of the pond which takes into account the variation of solar radiation, ambient temperature and the amount of heat extracted with time. Furthermore3 it considers a small-scale pond whose top is covered by a transparent cover, thus considerably reducing the thickness of the top convective zone. The parameters investigated include: pond dimensions, depths of the different layers, starting dates for pond operation and load application, pond insulation and the value of the thermal load.  相似文献

An alternative method of heat extraction from salinity-gradient solar ponds is investigated with the aim of increasing the overall energy efficiency of collecting solar radiation, storing heat and delivering this heat to an application. In this alternative method, heat is extracted from the non-convecting gradient layer of a solar pond as well as, or instead of, from the lower convective zone (LCZ). A theoretical analysis of combined gradient-layer and LCZ heat extraction is conducted to obtain expressions for the variation of temperature with depth in the pond, and the temperature gradient with depth. The dependence of the overall energy efficiency of the pond on thickness of the gradient-layer, temperature of delivered heat, and various combinations of gradient layer and LCZ heat extraction rates, including the limiting cases of gradient-layer heat extraction only, and LCZ heat extraction only, is then explored. This theoretical analysis suggests that heat extraction from the gradient layer has the potential to increase the overall energy efficiency of a solar pond delivering heat at a relatively high temperature by up to 50%, compared with the conventional method of heat extraction solely from the LCZ. The potential gain in efficiency using gradient-layer heat extraction is attributed to the lowering of heat losses by conduction to the upper convective (surface) zone that can be achieved with this method. Experimental investigations are proposed to test the predictions of the theoretical analysis in practice, and assess the impact of a number of idealized assumptions made on the findings reported here.  相似文献

This paper deals with the experimental investigation of a magnesium chloride saturated solar pond and its performance evaluation through energy and exergy efficiencies. The solar pond system is filled with magnesium chloride containing water to form layers with varying densities. A solar pond generally consists of three zones, and the densities of these zones increase from the top convective zone to the bottom storage zone. The incoming solar radiation is absorbed by salty water (with magnesium chloride) which eventually increases the temperature of the storage zone. The high-temperature salty water at the bottom of the solar pond remains much denser than the salty water in the upper layers. Thus, the convective heat losses are prevented by gradient layers. The experimental temperature changes of the solar pond are measured by using thermocouples from August to November. The densities of the layers are also measured and analysed by taking samples from at the same point of the temperature sensors. The energy and exergy content distributions are determined for the heat storage zone and the non-convective zone. The maximum exergy destructions and losses appear to be 79.05 MJ for the heat storage zone and 175.01 MJ for the non-convective zone in August. The energy and exergy efficiencies of the solar pond are defined as a function of solar radiation and temperatures. As a result, the maximum energy and exergy efficiencies are found to be 27.41% and 26.04% for the heat storage zone, 19.71% and 17.45% for the non-convective zone in August, respectively.  相似文献

Salinity-gradient solar ponds can collect and store solar heat at temperatures up to 80 °C. As a result, these water bodies act as a renewable source of low grade heat which can be utilized for heating and power generation applications. In this paper, design and test result of the combined system of thermosyphon and thermoelectric modules (TTMs) for the generation of electricity from low grade thermal sources like solar pond is discussed. In solar ponds, temperature difference in the range 40-60 °C is available between the lower convective zone (LCZ) and the upper convective zone (UCZ) which can be applied across the hot and cold surfaces of the thermoelectric modules to make it work as a power generator. The designed system utilizes gravity assisted thermosyphon to transfer heat from the hot bottom to the cold top of the solar pond. Thermoelectric cells (TECs) are attached to the top end of the thermosyphon which lies in the UCZ thereby maintaining differential temperature across them. A laboratory scale model based on the proposed combination of thermosyphon and thermoelectric cells was fabricated and tested under the temperature differences that exist in the solar ponds. Result outcomes from the TTM prototype have indicated significant prospects of such system for power generation from low grade heat sources particularly for remote area power supply. A potential advantage of such a system is its ability to continue to provide useful power output at night time or on cloudy days because of the thermal storage capability of the solar pond.  相似文献

Solar ponds are shallow bodies of water in which an artificially maintained salt concentration gradient prevents convection. They combine heat collection with long-term storage and can provide sufficient heat for the entire year. We consider the absorption of radiation as it passes through the water, and we derive equations for the resulting temperature range of the pond during year round operation, taking into account the heat that can be stored in the ground underneath the pond. Assuming a heating demand of 25000 Btu/degree day (Fahrenheit), characteristic of a 2000 ft2 house with fair insulation, and using records of the U.S. Weather Bureau, we carry out detailed calculations for several different locations and climates. We find that solar ponds can supply adequate heating, even in regions near the arctic circle. In midlatitudes the pond should be, roughly speaking, comparable in surface area and volume to the space it is to heat. Under some circumstances, the most economical system will employ a heat pump in conjunction with the solar pond. Cost estimates based on present technology and construction methods indicate that solar ponds may be competitive with conventional heating.  相似文献

The membrane stratified solar pond is a body of liquid utilizing closely spaced transparent membranes to quench convective heat transfer in the top part of the pond. Membranes may be configured as horizontal sheets, vertical sheets or vertical tubes. Several suitable liquids and membrane materials are discussed. Conditions for suppression of convection are described, and transmission of solar radiation through the pond is discussed for each of the three membrane configurations. The steady state thermal efficiency is calculated for the horizontal sheet configuration. Thermal behavior is similar to that of salt gradient solar ponds, but much deeper heat storage layers are feasible. In some cases aquaculture farming may be suitable in the storage layer.  相似文献

A salinity gradient solar pond (SGSP) is a simple and effective way of capturing and storing solar energy. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has very good solar energy resources and very rich salt lake brine resources. It lacks energy for its mineral processes and is therefore an ideal location for the development and operation of solar ponds. In China, solar ponds have been widely applied for aquaculture, in the production of Glauber’s salt and in the production of lithium carbonate from salt lake. As part of an experimental study, a SGSP using the natural brine of Zabuye salt lake in the Tibet plateau has been constructed. The pond has an area of 2500 m2 and is 1.9 m deep. The solar pond started operation in spring when the ambient temperature was very low and has operated steadily for 105 days, with the LCZ temperature varying between 20 and 40 °C. During the experimental study, the lower convective zone (LCZ) of the pond reached a maximum temperature of 39.1 °C. The results show that solar ponds can be operated successfully at the Qinghai-Tibet plateau and can be applied to the production of minerals.  相似文献

Laboratory simulation systems of saturated solar ponds using potash alum solutions were operated; the insulated columns 100 cm deep were heated at the bottom by heat exchangers with varying energy output. Self-generation of layered structure from homogeneous solution was observed. The temperature, density and supersaturation gradients, and the disappearance of convective waves indicated the relative stability of the layered structure. Attaining supersaturation of the surface zone, massive crystallization, and buildup of density gradient, which follows the temperature gradient, are the necessary conditions for the self-generation and self-maintenance of the laboratory pond.  相似文献

Ground heat losses from solar ponds are modelled numerically for various perimeter insulation strategies and several solar pond sizes. The numerical simulations are steady state calculations of heat loss from a circular or square pond to a heat sink at the outer boundaries of an earth volume that surrounds the pond on the bottom and sides. Simulation results indicate that insulation on top of the ground around the pond perimeter is rather ineffective in reducing heat loss, and that uninsulated sloping side walls are slightly more effective than insulated vertical side walls, except for very small ponds. The numerical results are used to derive coefficients for a semi-empirical equation describing ground heat loss as a function of pond area, pond perimeter and insulation strategy. Experimental results for ground heat loss and energy balance in the 400 m2 solar pond at the Ohio State University are reported. Analysis of this data, along with data on solar energy input, heat gain by the pond, heat loss through the gradient zone, and heat extraction from the pond yields a good energy balance. Numerical simulation of ground heat loss from this pond shows good agreement with the results obtained from pond measurements. Loss turns out to be large because of unexpectedly high values of earth thermal conductivity in the region.  相似文献

A salt gradient solar pond is a large scale solar collector having built-in heat storage capability. This is in part due to the mass of water in the pond and in part to the ground beneath the pond. Some scholars have already paid attention to the ground thermal storage. In this work, emphasis has been put upon the un-steady state performance and the transient behavior of SGSPs. A simple computer simulation method is adopted to study the ground heat loss and the heat recovery rate under varied combinations of the depth of the underground water table, the thickness of the lower convective zone, the heat withdrawal pattern, and the thermal properties of the soil. The effect of an insulation layer between the pond and the ground is also examined.  相似文献

This paper presents a mathematical model of the performance of the salt gradient solar pond. A lumped parameter model of the upper convective zone, non-convective zone and lower convective zone is used. This model enables the temperatures of the upper-convective zone and the lower convective zone of the solar pond to be predicted. The experimental results agree well with theoretically predicted values. The major error in the theoretical results is due to the difference between the theoretical value of the solar radiation inside the water and that observed experimentally. It is found that the experimental value of the solar radiation at a depth of 90 cm is approximately 26 per cent of the total solar radiation falling on the solar pond surface, whereas the corresponding theoretical value is found to be 33 per cent. The results conclude that the lumped parameter model can be used as a simple model to predict the performance of the solar pond.  相似文献

This paper presents a periodic analysis of a three zone solar pond as a solar energy collector and long term storage system. We explicitly take into account the convective heat and mass flux through the pond surface and evaluate the temperature and heat fluxes at various levels in the pond during its year round operation by solving the time dependent Fourier heat conduction equation with internal heat generation resulting from the absorption of solar radiation in the pond water. Eventually, an expression, for the transient rate at which heat can be retrieved from the solar pond to keep the temperature of the zone of heat extraction as constant, is derived. Heat retrieval efficiencies of 40.0 per cent, 32.1 per cent, 28.3 per cent and 25.5 per cent are predicted at collection temperatures of 40, 60, 80 and 100°C, respectively. the retrieved heat flux exhibits a phase difference of about 30 to 45 days with the incident solar flux; the load levelling in the retrieved heat flux improves as the thickness of the non-convective zone increases. the efficiency of the solar pond system for conversion of solar energy into mechanical work is also studied. This efficiency is found to increase with collection temperature and it tends to level around 5 per cent at collection temperatures about 90°C.  相似文献

Solar pond is an artificially constructed pond in which significant temperature rises are caused to occur in the lower regions by preventing convection. To prevent convection, salt water is used in the pond. Those ponds are called “salt gradient solar pond”. In the last 15 years, many salt gradient solar ponds varying in size from a few hundred to a few thousand square meters of surface area have been built in a number of countries. Nowadays, mini solar ponds are also being constructed for various thermal applications. In this work, various design of solar pond, prospects to improve performance, factors affecting performance, mode of heat extraction, theoretical simulation, measurement of parameters, economic analysis and its applications are reviewed.  相似文献

Simple correlations and corresponding nomographs are presented, which express the maximum useful heat received from salt-gradient solar ponds throughout the year or during a specified season of the year, and the corresponding optimum depth of the nonconvective zone in terms of the thickness of the upper convective zone and the temperature under which the maximum useful heat is received. The correlations are valid for the Athens (Greece) area or for regions with a similar climate, because solar radiation and ambient temperature values for Athens have been employed, obtained by a statistical process of hourly measurements over a period of about 20 years. For other climates, it is easy to develop similar correlations using the same methodology. Development of the proposed correlations is based on a method, which simulates the transient operation of the salt-gradient pond using finite-differences, and calculates the useful heat received hourly along the typical year. Thus, the useful heat received during a period or throughout the year is calculated as a sum of hourly values. Calculations of the useful heat are performed for a great number of values of the parameters of the problem, and the combinations of values that maximize useful heat are selected and used for developing correlations and corresponding nomographs. The correlations presented may be employed in the design of the optimum solar pond under the specific requirements of each application.  相似文献
