As part of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Aging Water Infrastructure Research Program, several areas of research are being pursued including a review of quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) practices and acceptance testing during the installation of rehabilitation systems (USEPA 2011). The objectives of this research effort were to collect, analyze and summarize information on the installation and QA/QC practices for the trenchless rehabilitation of sewer and water transmission mains. In addition, consideration was given to practices related to water service lines, sewer service laterals, force mains, siphons, sewer manholes, pumping stations, associated wet wells and other appurtenances. This review was accomplished primarily by conducting interviews directly with rehabilitation technology vendors, design engineers and water and wastewater utilities that have a track record of using trenchless rehabilitation technologies within their network. This paper provides an overview of how QA/QC issues have been handled in North America for trenchless rehabilitation technologies.  相似文献

Accurate predictions of future conditions of sewer systems are needed for efficient rehabilitation planning. For this purpose, a range of sewer deterioration models has been proposed which can be improved by calibration with observed sewer condition data. However, if datasets lack historical records, calibration requires a combination of deterioration and sewer rehabilitation models, as the current state of the sewer network reflects the combined effect of both processes. Otherwise, physical sewer lifespans are overestimated as pipes in poor condition that were rehabilitated are no longer represented in the dataset. We therefore propose the combination of a sewer deterioration model with a simple rehabilitation model which can be calibrated with datasets lacking historical information. We use Bayesian inference for parameter estimation due to the limited information content of the data and limited identifiability of the model parameters. A sensitivity analysis gives an insight into the model's robustness against the uncertainty of the prior. The analysis reveals that the model results are principally sensitive to the means of the priors of specific model parameters, which should therefore be elicited with care. The importance sampling technique applied for the sensitivity analysis permitted efficient implementation for regional sensitivity analysis with reasonable computational outlay. Application of the combined model with both simulated and real data shows that it effectively compensates for the bias induced by a lack of historical data. Thus, the novel approach makes it possible to calibrate sewer pipe deterioration models even when historical condition records are lacking. Since at least some prior knowledge of the model parameters is available, the strength of Bayesian inference is particularly evident in the case of small datasets.  相似文献

Management of infrastructure projects is becoming increasingly challenging due to inherent uncertainties. The most effeective way to deal with uncertainty is to collect supplementary information and knowledge. When expensive or infeasible, quantification of uncertainty may be performed using analytical or simulation techniques. The City of Edmonton, Canada has approximately 4600 km of sewer pipes in the combined, sanitary, and storm sewer local systems with uncertainty issues related to deterioration. The City has taken a proactive approach with respect to sewer rehabilitation, as it is more cost-effeective to repair a defective pipe prior to failure rather than after a collapse. This article demonstrates an approach for predicting the condition of a sewer pipe and the related cost of rehabilitation, given the limited data. Three models are described in this article that are developed to assist the City of Edmonton to effeectively plan maintenance expenditure. Each model uses a combination of rule-based simulation and probability analysis to assist in the planning of future expenditures for sewer maintenance, thereby producing an invaluable planning tool.  相似文献

Before privatization of the water authorities in England and Wales in 1989, future water companies were instructed to provide auditable proof of their investment requirements by the production of asset management plans.
With respect to distribution systems for potable water, asset management plan studies have established that unlined ferrous mains are often the main cause of complaints about discoloured water. It has also been found that the investment in water mains rehabilitation, which is driven by water quality problems, overshadows similar investment requirements driven by high burst rates and poor hydraulic performance.
This paper describes how certain techniques of water quality modelling have been developed and refined to provide a rapid, cost-effective method for identifying requirements for water-main rehabilitation.  相似文献

This work presents a review of applicable sewer rehabilitation options using trenchless technology in Malaysia. The typical problems faced in wastewater collection systems are analysed and factors that determine the selection method are outlined. This study also highlights the necessary steps to be taken prior to the rehabilitation work. The trenchless technology reviewed here comprises repair, renovation and replacement options. The cost-effectiveness of different rehabilitation methods was identified to assess the economic viability of various options in the Malaysian context. This study reveals that not all the trenchless technologies available in the market are suitable for use in Malaysia, mainly due to incompatibility of the rehabilitation materials used. Furthermore, as trenchless rehabilitation generally involves higher capital outlay than open-cut methods, the choice of rehabilitation method has to be made on a case-to-case basis.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper proposes a new performance index of foul sewer systems, i.e. sewer conveyance capacity (SCC) index, to quantify the surplus capacity for multi-objective optimization design problems. The use of the new SCC index is demonstrated using a hypothetical network and a real-world foul sewer network. Results obtained show clear trade-offs between SCC and the other two objectives considered, i.e., capital and operational costs and greenhouse gas emissions. The results show that the upstream sewers in the system often have a relatively large surplus capacity, while the sewer mains operate close to the design capacity. Moreover, SCC is compared with three common indicators at both individual sewer and system-wide levels. Strong correlations between SCC and other indicators are revealed, implying that SCC is a good representation of system performance and can provide a more comprehensive picture of the foul sewer system performance.  相似文献

Methane formation and emission in sewer systems has not received as much attention as hydrogen sulphide formation. Through field measurements from two rising mains, with an average sewage temperature of 28.4 and 26.6 degrees C, respectively, at the time of sampling, this study shows that a significant amount of methane can be produced in sewer systems, and that this production is positively correlated with the hydraulic retention time of wastewater in these systems. The experimental results from a laboratory-scale sewer system fed with real sewage with a temperature of approximately 21 degrees C confirmed these field observations and further revealed that methanogenesis and sulphate reduction occur simultaneously in sewers, with methane production contributing considerably more to the loss of soluble COD in sewers than sulphate reduction. The production of methane in sewers at levels revealed by this study is a serious environmental concern as it potentially results in greenhouse emissions that is comparable to that caused by the energy consumption for the treatment of the same wastewater. Further, methane production in sewers influences sulphide production and its management due to the competition between methanogens and sulphate-reducing bacteria for potentially the same electron donors. The potential interactions between sulphate-reducing and methanogenic bacteria in sewer networks are discussed.  相似文献

Accurate and reliable predictions of sulfide production in a sewer system greatly benefit formulation of appropriate strategies for optimal sewer management. Sewer systems, rising main systems in particular, are highly dynamic in terms of both flow and wastewater composition. In order to get an insight in sulfide production as a response to the dynamic changes in sewer conditions, several measurement campaigns were conducted in two rising mains in Gold Coast, Australia. The levels of various sulfur species and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) were monitored through hourly sampling for periods ranging from 8 to 29 h. The results of these field studies showed large temporal as well as spatial variations in sulfide generation. A dynamic sewer model taking into account the hydraulics and the biochemical transformation processes was formulated and calibrated and validated using the data collected during the four measurement campaigns at the two sites. The model was demonstrated to reasonably well describe the temporal and spatial variations in sulfide, sulfate and VFA concentrations. Application of the model was illustrated with a case study aimed to optimize oxygen injection to one of the two mains studied, which is being used as a means to control sulfide production on this site. The model predicted that, moving the current oxygen injection point to a location close to the end of the sewer line could achieve the same degree of sulfide control with only 50% of the current oxygen use. This study highlighted that the location at which oxygen is injected plays a major role in sulfide control and a dynamic model could be used to make a proper choice of the location.  相似文献

Since 1987 British Gas plc has undertaken an extensive programme of medium pressure (up to 2 bar) cast-iron mains replacement in urban locations, using a variety of rehabilitation techniques.
This paper describes the experience of North Thames Region of British Gas plc, over the period 1987–1991, when the rehabilitation of over 230 km of mains was undertaken in the size range 300–460 mm.
The techniques which were used favoured medium density polyethylene pipe wherever possible. However, about 100 km of rehabilitation was undertaken using hoselining, usually where mains were larger than 460 mm dia., or where aboveground access was restricted, or if the mains configuration included many changes of direction.
This paper deals with (a) various aspects of operating rehabilitation contracts from a public utilities viewpoint, (b) the special factors relating to the inspection and testing of hoselined mains including factors found to contribute to failure, and (c) some of the controls that have been introduced to improve reliability of rehabilitation systems.  相似文献

In Tokyo Metropolis, the rehabilitation and renewal of sewer systems is an urgent issue due to the aged sewers and increases in wastewater and stormwater runoff. In such urban area, shield tunneling confronts various problems, such as high construction costs, adverse effects on living environments, and densely used surface and underground spaces. To solve these problems, the authors developed a new shield tunneling method, which is called the “compact shield” method. This paper describes the concepts used for the construction of shield sewer tunnels without inner linings and an overview of the segments and a shield machine that were newly developed.  相似文献

Deterioration modelling can be a powerful tool to support utilities in planning efficient sewer rehabilitation strategies. However, the benefits of using deterioration models are still to be demonstrated to increase the confidence of utilities toward simulation results. This study aims at assessing the performance of a statistical deterioration model to estimate the current condition and predict the future deterioration of a sewer network. The prediction quality of the deterioration model GompitZ has been assessed using the extensive data-set of 35,826 inspections performed in the city of Braunschweig, Germany. The performance of the statistical model has been compared with the performance of a simple model based only on the condition of observed sewers. Results show that the statistical model performs much better than the simple model for simulating the deterioration of the network. The findings highlight the relevance of using modelling tools to simulate sewer deterioration and support strategic asset management.  相似文献

Automation is gaining momentum in industry, particularly in rehabilitation and inspection works of underground infrastructure facilities. This paper describes a model for automating inspection and identification of surface defects in underground water and sewer pipes. The paper describes the current efforts in identification of surface defects in underground water and sewer mains, and presents an automated system designed to assist infrastructure engineers in diagnosing defects in this class of pipe networks. It describes the general architecture of the system and its basic components, and focuses primarily on four modules designed for automating image acquisition, image processing, features extraction and classification of defects.  相似文献

Combined sewer overflows (CSO) are part of common combined drainage systems. Due to the improvement achieved in the efficiency of wastewater treatment plants, the discharge of such CSO became the focus of discussion regarding the quality of the natural water bodies. Thus operation of combined sewer systems and especially of existing detention facilities aims at an extensive avoidance of combined sewer discharge. To fulfil this task, real-time control may be one of the possible solutions. In Germany many communities already made the first step towards real-time control, i.e. data logging and supervision of the sewerage condition. The deteriorating condition of water mains in Canada and US calls for rehabilitation strategies that accounts mainly for budget and level of service constraints. These water mains have received ‘D’ grade in the two countries. Decision support models can assist decision makers regarding when to rehabilitate and whether to repair, renovate or replace section(s) of water mains. The literature indicates that decision models should account for life cycle cost, uncertainty, long-term planning, targeted levels of service and budget constraints. The objectives of this paper are to: identify and group rehabilitation methods, present decision support model to rank and select most suitable rehabilitation method(s), and study the impact of rehabilitation methods on the functional and structural performance of water mains. The developed decision support model accounts for life cycle cost of each competing scenario along with the associated uncertainty. The model, unlike available models, can effectively account for vagueness, qualitative assessments and human judgment associated with input data. A case study of a water main network was analysed in order to demonstrate the use of the developed model and to illustrate its essential features. The results obtained indicate that the model can support the generation of well-informed decisions in a timely manner.  相似文献

To regularly and proactively assess conditions of sewer infrastructure systems to ensure their structural integrity and continuity of services, it is critical to advance the state of automated pipeline inspection and condition assessment. Currently, a critical issue is to address realistic defect detection that deals with real sewer inspection data. This paper presents the findings of a research project that seeks to enable automated detection of defects in sewer pipelines from inspection videos and images. The need for and the challenges of automated defect detection in sewer infrastructure condition monitoring are presented. Based on a general detection and recognition model established in this paper, a change detection based approach which is tailored to solve the challenges in this sewer pipeline domain is described and illustrated through case study.  相似文献

Much attention has been focused on the need for sewer renovation and rehabilitation of old sewerage systems, but age is not always the reason for sewer failure. Serious problems of performance have also been encountered on sewerage schemes less than 10 years old. This paper considers the problems of groundwater infiltration into new foul sewers, and suggests that deficiencies might exist in some aspects of modern sewer design and construction.
Infiltration is most frequently observed at sewer joints. Results are presented of laboratory tests which show the ability of flexible fixed-ring joints on clay sewers to withstand both internal and external pressures. Damaged polyester fairings on the spigots of these pipes can act as one-way valves, and massive infiltration may result. The standard site water test is shown to be inadequate in detecting some of these types of defect which may result from damaged pipes or poor workmanship.  相似文献

Operational decision-making processes for networked infrastructure management often occur as a multi-actor planning problem, implying these are based on negotiations between different stakeholders in addition to available system quality information. As such, does more accurate data about actual structural condition lead to other or better decision-making? A serious game is introduced, Maintenance in Motion, aiming at investigating the influence of information quality on rehabilitation decisions, for single- and multi-actor decision-making. Players manage drinking water, gas, sewer and street infrastructures. They are to balance their individual goal, cost-effectiveness, with their team utility, increasing overall infrastructure quality to minimise failure while minimising overall public costs. The management of sewer systems requires information about discharge and variability of typical wastewater sources in urban catchments. Especially the infiltration of groundwater and the inflow of surface water (I/I) are important for making decisions about the rehabilitation and operation of sewer networks. This paper presents a methodology to identify I/I and estimate its quantity. For each flow fraction in sewer networks, an individual model approach is formulated whose parameters are optimised by the method of least squares. This method was applied to estimate the contributions to the wastewater flow in the sewer system of the City of Dresden (Germany), where data availability is good. Absolute flows of I/I and their temporal variations are estimated. Further information on the characteristics of infiltration is gained by clustering and grouping sewer pipes according to the attributes construction year and groundwater influence and relating these resulting classes to infiltration behaviour. Further, it is shown that condition classes based on CCTV-data can be used to estimate the infiltration potential of sewer pipes.  相似文献
