Specimens of Scots pine sapwood (Pinus sylvestris) and beech (Fagus sylvatica) were treated with a sodium water glass solution and 1,3-dimethylol-4,5-dihydroxyethylene urea (DMDHEU). The pH-values of water glass treated specimens were between 9.7 and 12.0. Those of DMDHEU treated specimens were 3.8 (Scots pine) and 4.2 (beech). The resistance observed in an eight weeks laboratory test against the blue stain fungus Aureobasidium pullulans showed that treatments with water glass and DMDHEU reduced but not prevented the fungal growth. Wood specimens treated with water glass showed the lowest colonisation of blue stain. Both treatments inhibited fungal penetration through the ray cells. HPLC analysis showed that the amount of simple sugars was reduced due to water glass treatment. The amount of simple sugars in DMDHEU treated wood depended on the wood species. The amount of available sugar monomers did not indicate an influence of the colonisation of the sample surface.  相似文献

Specimens of Scots pine sapwood (Pinus sylvestris) and beech wood (Fagus sylvatica) were treated with a sodium water glass solution, an amino-alkyl-functional oligomeric siloxane and 1,3-dimethylol-4,5-dihydroxyethylene urea (DMDHEU). The specimens were exposed outside without ground contact for 24 months. Colour measurements during outside exposure showed a discoloration of all wood specimen surfaces. FTIR spectroscopy displayed lignin degradation of all specimens during the initial exposure time. Chemical treatments decelerated fungal infestation of wood, while their effect on lignin degradation was not discernible. SEM studies revealed that fungal infestation was affected by the different treatments. The untreated specimens showed radial penetration of fungal hyphae through the pits. Only superficial infestation and no radial penetration were visible at water glass and siloxane treated specimens. A significantly reduced radial penetration of fungal hyphae was exhibited at DMDHEU treated specimens. Fungal infestation through the pits was not visible.  相似文献

Lignin-based wood adhesives prepared without formaldehyde substituted by non-volatile non-toxic aldehyde, namely glyoxal, were prepared and tested for application to wood panels such as particleboard. The adhesives yielded good IB strength results of the panels, enough to comfortably pass relevant international standard specifications for exterior-grade panels. The adhesives also showed sufficient reactivity to yield panels in press times comparable to those of formaldehyde-based commercial adhesives.  相似文献

The mechanical properties of densified wood relevant for structural composites were studied. Low density hybrid poplar (Populus deltoides × Populus trichocarpa) was densified using the viscoelastic thermal compression (VTC) process to three different degrees of densification (63, 98, and 132%). The modulus of rupture (MOR) and the modulus of elasticity (MOE) of the control (undensified) wood and of the VTC wood were determined. The bonding performance of the control and VTC wood, using two phenol-formaldehyde (PF) adhesives, was studied. Four different 3-layer composites were also prepared from undensified and VTC wood, and tested in four-point bending. The results showed that the bending properties of the VTC wood (MOR and MOE) were significantly improved due to the increased density. The bonding performance of VTC wood with PF adhesives was comparable with or better than in the case of the control wood. Increased density of the face layers in the 3-layer VTC composites was advantageous for their mechanical performance.  相似文献

The bondability/glueability of aged and sanded thermo-hydro-mechanically (THM) densified beech wood (Fagus sylvatica L.) was tested and compared with undensified sanded beech wood as a control. THM and control specimens were bonded with five different soy protein isolate (SPI) based adhesives. Commercial SPI powder was thermally modified in the vacuum chamber at 50 or 100?°C and pH adjusted (to pH 10.0) dispersions in water prepared at 24, 50 or 90?°C. Wettability was determined with measuring the sessile drop contact angles of water. Effective penetrations (EPs) and tensile shear strengths of THM and control specimens were determined. THM and control wood had similar wettability. Although THM wood had lower moisture content than control wood, it absorbed the water more slowly than control wood. THM specimens showed lower EPs than control specimens when comparing individual adhesives due to increased density of THM wood. Adhesives prepared with SPI thermally modified at 50?°C showed statistically significantly lower tensile shear strength of bonded THM specimens than that of bonded control specimens. THM densification had no significant effect on the bonding strengths of adhesives prepared with non-modified SPI and SPI thermally modified at 100?°C.  相似文献

Thermal stability of glued wood joints measured by shear tests   总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1
The thermal stability of glued wood joints is an important criterion to determine the suitability of adhesives in the field of engineered wood. During their product life, glued wood joints can be exposed to high temperatures in various ways (direct exposure to the sun, fire, etc.). Thereby the cohesiveness of the adhesive must not degrade. This raises the question of how the strength of bonding changes under thermal load. The current investigation covers the influence of temperature (T=20 to 220°C) on the shear strength of glued wood joints. Different adhesive systems were investigated. With increasing temperature, the shear strength of solid wood and also of glued wood joints decreased. There were big differences in thermal stability and failure behaviour between the adhesive systems as well as within the polyurethane group. The thermal stability of one-component polyurethane systems can be greatly varied by modifying their chemical structure. Well adapted one-component polyurethane adhesives reach a strength similar to that of phenol resorcinol resin.  相似文献

The development and optimization of a new, environment-friendly adhesive made from abundant and renewable cornstarch and tannin is described in this study. At present, the production of wood composites mainly relies on petrochemical- and formaldehyde-based adhesives such as phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resins and urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins. Formaldehyde-free cornstarch plus tannin adhesives were evaluated for mechanical and physical properties (shear strength, rheological characterisation and thermogravimetric analysis). First, optimized conditions for the preparation of cornstarch-sodium hydroxide wood adhesives were determined. The parameters studied were the following: total solids content of the adhesives, sodium hydroxide concentration and sodium hydroxide/cornstarch volume ratio. The highest shear strength results appeared to be 0.5 sodium hydroxide/cornstarch volume ratio when using concentrations of cornstarch (65% p/v H2O) and sodium hydroxide (33% p/v H2O). The optimum cure temperature was 170 °C and the cure time 4 min. The addition of two types of tannin-based adhesives, Mimosa and Quebracho, with hexamethylenetetramine (hexamine) hardener to the cornstarch-sodium hydroxide formulation improved the shear strength and decreased the viscosity of adhesives.  相似文献

This study investigated the radial penetration of three conventional cold-set wood adhesives [emulsion polymer isocyanate (EPI), poly (vinyl acetate) (PVAc), one-component polyurethane (PU)] into various degrees of furfurylated and N-methylol melamine-modified (NMM) Scots pine, and heat-treated Scots pine and beech based on measurements of effective (EP) and maximum penetration (MP) from microscopic observations. EP of EPI adhesive decreased after modification with higher concentration of furfuryl alcohol while an improved penetration was recorded for PVAc into furfurylated wood. A deeper penetration was observed for all adhesives into wood treated with lower concentration of furfuryl alcohol. The EP of EPI and PU adhesives reduced after NMM treatment but it increased in the case of PVAc. In spite of reduction of EP of PU after NMM treatment, it represented a deeper penetration among all adhesives possibly due to its lower molecular weight. For Scots pine, increasing the treatment temperature improved EP of all adhesives while for beech, the EP of PU and PVAc increased largely in the case of samples treated at 195 °C. Visual analysis of fluorescence microscopy pictures provided more detailed information on modality of penetration. The results are useful for understanding the interaction among common adhesives and modified materials, and can be used in future research to explain the bonding behavior of modified wood.  相似文献

Based on standard tannin adhesive formulations, tannin-resorcinol-glyoxal and tannin-resorcinol-glutaraldehyde cold-setting adhesives were prepared for wood glulam in this paper. Only less para-formaldehyde was added as hardener of adhesives. Both of them showed a rival tensile strength with tannin-resorcinol–formaldehyde adhesive. However they exhibited lower wood failure. The proportion of formaldehyde of the two are drastically decreased.  相似文献

Bonding of untreated, intermediate (hydro-thermolysed) and heat treated wood with melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF), phenol-resorcinol-formaldehyde (PRF) and polyurethane (PUR) adhesives was studied. An industrial heat treatment process (Plato ®) was used, which included two separate heat treatment stages and a drying stage in-between. Laminated beams having four lamellas were prepared from untreated and treated timber for mechanical testing of the bond lines. The results of the tests showed that heat treatment affected the shear strength and the delamination of the laminated wood depending on the adhesive system used for bonding. The PUR and MUF adhesives performed in a rather similar way, and better than the PRF adhesive. The shear strength of laminated wood bonded with the waterborne MUF and PRF adhesives decreased for the specimens made of hydro-thermolysed timber and decreased further for the specimens made of fully heat treated timber. The difference in adhesive bond shear strength between untreated, intermediate and fully treated wood was less obvious in the case of the PUR adhesive. Delamination of the PRF bond line decreased drastically for all the specimens made of heat treated timber.  相似文献

This study investigated the physical properties (rheological and thermogravimetric analysis) of cornstarch-tannin adhesives and the mechanical properties (dry tensile strength and 3-point bending strength) of plywood made using cornstarch-tannin adhesives. This adhesive was evaluated for its utility in interior plywood manufacture. The optimum cure temperature and cure time of cornstarch-tannin adhesives were 170°C and 4?min, respectively. Plywood bonded with formaldehyde-free cornstarch-tannin adhesive exhibited excellent mechanical properties comparable to commercially available phenol-formaldehyde plywood adhesives. It was found that cornstarch-tannin panels which do not contain formaldehyde and with an emission equal to that of heated but unbound wood can be obtained by the use of hexamethylenetetramine (hexamine) as hardener. The work has indicated that an environmentally friendly wood adhesive can be prepared from a natural renewable resource (cornstarch and wattle tannin) for bonding interior-type plywood.  相似文献

In this paper, the wettability of two different wood species as raw material for Oriented Strand Board (OSB) is analyzed. One species is pine, a common material for the production of OSB; the other species, poplar, and especially hybrid poplar, is newly used in OSB and might require a modified board production process compared to pine. Therefore, strands of hybrid poplar obtained from a central European poplar plantation were compared to pine strands in terms of surface characteristics and contact angles after application of the adhesives. For the contact angle measurement droplets of two types of adhesives, melamine urea formaldehyde (MUF) resin and polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (pMDI), were applied onto the surface of the strands. pMDI exhibited larger contact angles on poplar than on pine; but for both wood species the contact angles were low when compared to MUF. MUF values were much higher, but relatively similar numbers were measured for both wood species.

A traditional-type cold-setting wood adhesive as well as separate applications fast-set wood adhesives for exterior-grade structural fingerjoints and glulam based on soda bagasse lignin were developed and tested. Their results satisfy the requirements of the relevant international specifications. The soda bagasse lignin used composed approximately 75% of the total adhesive solids while resorcinol content as low as 13.6% on liquid resin was used, with good results. On top of their novelty and of their excellent performance these adhesives appear to be economically very attractive.  相似文献

Dry bond strength of different adhesives on spruce and beech wood was tested by means of the former DIN standard 53253 (1964)scarf joint and the operative standard lap joint testing method according to EN 302-1 (2004). The failure mode in standard lap joint tests was mainly wood failure, whereas scarf joints failed in the bond line. Due to the high proportion of wood failure, no clear effect of the different adhesives, but a clear effect of wood species on the bond strength was observed for lap joint samples. By contrast, scarf joint testing was far less dependent on wood species and delivered clear differences in the strength of different adhesive systems.  相似文献

Water glass (WG) is an inorganic binder with excellent fire resistance in porous materials but has limited application to wood bonding. In this work, modified WG adhesive was developed and the effect of modification on the properties of adhesive and particleboard bonded with it was investigated. The bonding strength of WG adhesives increased by the modification with boric acid and aminofunctional silane. Stable siloxane linkage can lead to enhanced bonding. Particleboards with modified WG were manufactured with a target density of 750 kg m?3. The silane was selected as the best modifier; it was the only one to meet the requirements of EN 312 (Type 2). The reaction of amino groups onto the surface of wood was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectrum. All particleboards produced with WG adhesives showed resistance to fire comparable to those with urea formaldehyde in the combustion test for 30 min. As a result of this investigation, WG modified with silane could be a desirable alternative to current synthetic adhesives for wood composites and fire resistance application.  相似文献
