This article introduces and provides the context for the themed section on mobile communication in Asia. It suggests that much work remains to be done in adequately grasping the new mobile, mediated face of communication in the very diverse Asian region. It also suggests that such a new direction in research needs to go hand in hand with rethinking the conceptual and theoretical bases of mobile, and indeed, Internet and computer‐mediated communication.  相似文献

The increasing number of mobile devices with ever‐growing capabilities makes them useful for running scientific applications. However, these applications have high computational demands, whereas mobile devices have limited capabilities when compared with non‐mobile devices. More importantly, mobile devices rely on batteries for their power supply. We initially measure the battery consumption of different versions of known micro‐benchmarks representing common programming primitives found in scientific applications. Then, we analyze the performance of such micro‐benchmarks in CPU‐intensive mobile applications. We apply good programming practices and code refactorings to reduce battery consumption of scientific mobile applications. Our results show the reduction in energy usage from applying these refactorings to three scientific applications, and we consequently propose guidelines for high‐performance computing applications. Our focus is on Android, the dominant mobile operating system. As a long‐term contribution, our results represent one more step in the progress towards hybrid distributed infrastructures comprising fixed and mobile nodes, that is, the so‐called mobile grids. Most modern people inevitably use smart phones for their daily activities. These devices are more than just telephones and a means to connect with others for many people. They are also fashionable products. This study utilizes two models—the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT)—to explore whether cognitive age is an important factor influencing technology acceptance behavior. We conduct a comparative analysis using the two models in the context of smartphones. Our results using model 1 show that perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, fashion involvement, and flow are all significant factors in technology acceptance and use by digital natives (i.e. those under 34 years old). The results of model 2, which divides digital immigrants into two groups, reveal that perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and flow are significant for digital immigrants who perceive themselves to be younger than their chronological age. For digital immigrants who perceive themselves to be as old as or order than their chronological age (cognitive age> = 34 years old), only perceived usefulness is significant. Finally, we discuss these results and make suggestions relevant to technology acceptance and use in different cognitive age groups.  相似文献

This paper explores how the use of smartphones vs. laptops influences students’ engagement, behaviour and experience watching academic videos in a collaborative classroom. Experiments were run in authentic teaching sessions with a total of 483 first-year higher education students. The methodology applied is a quasi-experimental design with post-test-only, being the independent variable, the device used to visualise the academic videos. Results indicate that the use of laptops has provided better results in terms of student’s engagement with the videos, their collaborative behaviour and satisfaction with the device. Hence, the findings of this research suggest that the type of mobile device used in activities that consider the use of videos in a collaborative class need to be carefully chosen to maximise the student’s comfortability – and in consequence, their engagement with the video-based learning activity and their positive behaviour and experience within the collaborative context.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Wireless technologies are becoming more prevalent in American society, but are they in our libraries? This article is a result of a survey of 766 librarians (mostly academics) across the United States on their use and perceived use of their customers of personal digital assistants (PDAs), smartphones, webpads, and other handheld wireless devices. How are these devices being used? What percentage of libraries support wireless handheld device users, and how is this support delivered? Is there a demand for more services for these users and for what are they asking? Have libraries modified content to meet the needs of wireless handheld device users, and if so, what content have they changed? Last, what are librarians’ perceptions of wireless handheld devices and the cost and licensing of wireless content?  相似文献

The present report is an empirical analysis of smartphone personalisation. We collected data from two groups of users to measure how they adapt the content, interface and physical appearance of their devices. This user-driven personalisation is measured with a simple heuristic approach to quantify the behaviour. Using these scores, we explore how users differ from each other in how they personalise their smartphones with a focus on gender differences, usability and device usage in the wild. Among our findings are that not all users personalise their smartphones, females and males personalise their iPhones differently, and those who personalised their phones more tended to rate it as more usable. The users who personalised more also used their device for greater periods of time on a broader range of applications. For instance, individuals who adapted their iPhones to a greater degree also accessed the Web more often and spent more time browsing once it was accessed. We conclude with a discussion of possible factors underlying the large user diversity of smartphone personalisation found in this research.  相似文献

In this paper we demonstrate how to monitor a smartphone running Symbian operating system and Windows Mobile in order to extract features for anomaly detection. These features are sent to a remote server because running a complex intrusion detection system on this kind of mobile device still is not feasible due to capability and hardware limitations. We give examples on how to compute relevant features and introduce the top ten applications used by mobile phone users based on a study in 2005. The usage of these applications is recorded by a monitoring client and visualized. Additionally, monitoring results of public and self-written malwares are shown. For improving monitoring client performance, Principal Component Analysis was applied which lead to a decrease of about 80% of the amount of monitored features.  相似文献

移动云计算为部署大量移动服务提供了技术支持,但用户在不稳定的通信条件下访问云资源往往需要大量的能耗,制约了移动云计算的广泛应用.对此,提出了基于用户交互行为最大化的链路预测方法.首先在数据预测模型的基础上利用基于互动关系改进的交互度方法对已知用户访问的数据进行预测;再结合基于用户行为的社交网络Friendlink方法对预测数据进行数据分析筛选,利用数据预存储机制来预存上述预测数据.实验结果表明,在保证不涉及用户隐私信息,并提高用户下次访问命中率的情况下,达到了预期的手机节能目的.  相似文献
