Previous research has largely focused on the influence of experienced affect on decision making; however, other sources of affective information may also shape decisions. In two studies, we examine the interacting influences of affective information, state affect, and personality on temporal discounting rates (i.e., the tendency to choose small rewards today rather than larger rewards in the future). In Study 1, participants were primed with either positive or negative affect adjectives before making reward choices. In Study 2, participants underwent either a positive or negative affect induction before making reward choices. Results in both studies indicate that neuroticism interacts with state unpleasant affect and condition (i.e., positive or negative primes or induction) to predict discounting rates. Moreover, the nature of the interactions depends on the regulatory cues of the affective information available. These results suggest that irrelevant (i.e., primes) and stable (i.e., personality traits) sources of affective information also shape judgments and decision making. BACKGROUND As worldwide interest in healthy and delicious meat analogues increases, the texture of these products has become an important indicator of quality. Mycoprotein as fungal mycelium could provide a distinctive chewing sensation; however, the unfavorable consumer perception of fungal mycelium demands the production of meat analogues with true mushroom mycelium. RESULTS: The industrial and economical bioprocess was developed using an inexpensive medium (30 g L?1 sugar cane extract (SCE), 10 g L?1 NaNO3 and 5 g L?1 yeast extract) and A. bisporus Suksung. The SCE was maintained at around 10 g L?1 to minimize osmotic shock. The maximum mycelium production of 15.0 g L?1 (dry weight) was reached within 4 days. Scanning electron microscopic analysis showed fibrous and directional structure rather than a more typical pellet structure. Meat analogues with mushroom mycelium had better textural properties, being higher in hardness, springiness, and chewiness and with preferable umami characteristics compared to meat analogues utilizing soy protein. The overall acceptance of meat analogues prepared with mycelium and soy protein, and a ground beef patty, were 5, 2 and 10, respectively. CONCLUSION: The development of an industrial bioprocess for A. bisporus mycelium allowed the production of a highly acceptable meat analogue having not only superior textural properties but also umami characteristics when compared to that of soy protein. A probiotic dairy product was developed on the basis of a traditional dish called mutandabota to enable resource-poor populations in southern Africa to benefit from a functional food. Mutandabota is widely consumed in rural southern Africa, making it an ideal food matrix to carry probiotics. First, a process to produce probiotic mutandabota was designed. Raw cow milk was boiled and subsequently cooled to ambient temperature (25°C). Next, dry pulp from the fruit of the baobab tree (Adansonia digitata L.) was added to the milk at a concentration of 4% (wt/vol). This mixture was inoculated with the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus yoba and left to ferment for 24 h, while the growth of the bacterial culture was monitored. Final ingredients were then added to produce probiotic mutandabota that had 14% (wt/vol) baobab fruit pulp and 7% (wt/vol) sugar in cow milk. The pH of probiotic mutandabota was pH 3.5, which ensures that the product is microbiologically safe. The viable plate count of L. rhamnosus yoba increased from 5.8 ± 0.3 log cfu/mL at the point of inoculation to 8.8 ± 0.4 log cfu/mL at the moment of consumption, thereby meeting the criterion to have a viable count of the probiotic bacterium in excess of 6 log cfu/mL of a product. Baobab fruit pulp at 4% promoted growth of L. rhamnosus yoba with a maximal specific growth rate (μmax) of 0.6 ± 0.2/h at 30°C. The developed technology, though specific for this particular product, has potential to be applied for the delivery of probiotics through a variety of indigenous foods in different regions of the world. Upon consumption, probiotic mutandabota is expected to improve the population's intestinal health, which is especially relevant for vulnerable target groups such as children and elderly people.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Dialysis can be life-saving for patients with end-stage renal failure. However, not only is it associated with significant morbidity and a greater mortality than transplantation, but it is also expensive. Therefore renal transplantation is generally regarded as the treatment of choice for patients in whom this form of renal replacement therapy is appropriate. Transplantation usually takes place after a variable period of dialytic therapy, but pre-emptive kidney transplantation (PKT) has established itself as an attractive alternative. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 1463 consecutive first kidney transplants performed between January 1980 and December 1995 in a single centre were analysed. The 161 patients (11%) transplanted without prior dialysis were compared with the 1302 patients who had been dialysed prior to being transplanted. The pre-emptive group did not differ from the dialysis group in respect of donor age, donor and recipient gender, HLA mismatch, or cold ischaemic time, although there were more live donor transplants within the pre-emptive group. RESULTS: Delayed graft function occurred more frequently in the dialysis group (25% vs 16%) but more patients experienced an acute rejection episode in the pre-emptive group (67 vs 55%). The actuarial graft survival in the pre-emptive group at 1, 5, and 10 years (84, 76 and 67%) was significantly higher than the respective values in the dialysis group (83, 69, and 56%). Within the live donor recipient cohort the survival advantage for the pre-emptive group was even more striking. CONCLUSION: Pre-emptive kidney transplantation not only avoids the risks, cost, and inconvenience of dialysis, but is also associated with better graft survival than transplantation after a period of dialysis, particularly within the live donor cohort.  相似文献

The concentration and distribution of natural radionuclides in marble around Igbeti marble mines, Nigeria, were measured to evaluate the environmental radioactivity and health effects which the marble samples may posses. The concentration of radionuclides was determined using gamma-ray spectrometry with NaI (Tl) detector. The measured values of the activities of (226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K in the marble samples were found to lie in the ranges 2.0-2.7, 0.3-1.2 and 5.7-7.3 Bq kg(-1), respectively. The samples were also found to have radium equivalent activity in the range 3.4-4.6 Bq kg(-1), external hazard indices of 0.009-0.012 and internal hazard indices of 0.014-0.019. The estimated representative (I(gammar)) hazard index is 0.028. The measurements show that marble samples from Igbeti mine have low level of natural radioactivity and therefore the use of these types of marble in construction of dwellings is safe for inhabitants.  相似文献

We have developed a mathematical model of skin coloration in cephalopods, a class of aquatic animals. Cephalopods utilize neurological and physiological control of various skin components to achieve active camouflage and communication. Specific physical processes of this coloration are identified and modeled, utilizing available biological materials data, to simulate active spectral changes in pigment-bearing organs and structural iridescent cells. Excellent agreement with in vitro measurements of squid skin is obtained. A detailed understanding of the physical principles underlying cephalopod coloration is expected to yield insights into the behavioral ecology of these animals.  相似文献

Alpha amylases are hydrolytic enzymes that are widespread in nature, being found in animals, microorganisms, and plants. These enzymes hydrolyze starch molecules into reducing sugars. Alpha amylases from microbial sources have several applications in industrial sectors. This enzyme is an effective target for the development of anti‐fungal agents. The binding affinity and enzyme inhibitory properties of 6‐gingerol toward alpha amylase have been determined. Molecular modeling and docking has been carried out, in order to get the molecular level interactions. Enzyme inhibition studies proved that 6‐gingerol is a competitive inhibitor of fungal alpha amylase. It was inferred that 6‐gingerol is a potent natural inhibitor of alpha amylase.  相似文献

A power-aware transceiver for half-duplex bidirectional chip-to-chip optical interconnects has been designed and fabricated in a 0.13 μm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology. The transceiver can detect the presence and absence of received signals and saves 55% power in Rx enabled mode and 45% in Tx enabled mode. The chip occupies an area of 1.034 mm2 and achieves a 3-dB bandwidth of 6 GHz and 7 GHz in Tx and Rx modes, respectively. The disabled outputs for the Tx and Rx modes are isolated with 180 dB and 139 dB, respectively, from the enabled outputs. Clear eye diagrams are obtained at 4.25 Gbps for both the Tx and Rx modes.  相似文献

Different VSA(Vacuum Swing Adsorption) cycles and process schemes have been evaluated to find suitable process configurations for effectively separating CO2 from flue gases from different industrial sectors. The cycles were studied using an adsorption simulator developed in our research group, which has been successfully used to predict experimental results over several years. Commercial zeolite APGIII and granular activated carbon were used as the adsorbents. Three-bed VSA cycles with- and without-product purge and 2-stage VSA systems have been investigated. It was found that for a feed gas containing 15% CO2(representing flue gas from power plants), high CO2 purities and recoveries could be obtained using a three-bed zeolite APGIII VSA unit for one stage capture, but with more stringent conditions such as deeper vacuum pressures of 1–3 k Pa. 2-stage VSA process operated in series allowed us to use simple process steps and operate at more realistic vacuum pressures. With a vacuum pressure of 10 k Pa, final CO2 purity of 95.3% with a recovery of 98.2% were obtained at specific power consumption of 0.55 MJ·(kg CO2)-1from feed gas containing15% CO2. These numbers compare very well with those obtained from a single stage process operating at1 k Pa vacuum pressure. The feed CO2 concentration was very influential in determining the desorption pressure necessary to achieve high separation efficiency. For feed gases containing N 30% CO2, a singlestage VSA capture process operating at moderate vacuum pressure and without a product purge, can achieve very high product purities and recoveries.  相似文献

The sonochemical oxidation of As(III) in the presence of peroxydisulfate ion (PDS) has been investigated. Sulfate anion radicals and OH radicals produced during acoustic cavitation readily oxidized As(III) to As(V) in an aqueous environment. The rate of oxidation of As(III) was remarkably high (~10 times) with respect to the concentration of PDS. The As(III) oxidation was found to be independent of the initial pH of the solution in the range 3–8. It was relatively low at pH above 8, however, this could be circumvented by increasing the concentration of PDS. The presence of oxygen in solution played a significant role in the rate of oxidation of As(III). Around 40% oxidation of As(III) was observed in the absence of oxygen compared to 80% oxidation in the presence of dissolved oxygen (10 mg/L) over a sonication time of 5 min. The addition of humic acid (HA) retarded the oxidation rate of As(III), but the effect could be offset by using larger amounts of PDS. The effects of ultrasound intensity, and frequency on the rate of the oxidation of As(III) were also studied. The rate of the oxidation of As(III) was not significantly dependent on the acoustic power applied, for the concentrations of As(III) used in this study. At an ultrasound frequency of 211 kHz, the rate of oxidation of As(III) was lower than that observed at 20 kHz. It is concluded that the sonochemical treatment of As(III) solutions in the presence of PDS is a simple and viable technique for the oxidation of As(III) to As(V).  相似文献
