To maximize the efficiency of cooling and freezing operations for foods, it is necessary to optimally design the refrigeration equipment to fit the specific requirements of the particular cooling or freezing application. The design of food refrigeration equipment requires estimation of the cooling and freezing times of foods, as well as the corresponding refrigeration loads. The accuracy of these estimates, in turn, depends upon accurate estimates of the surface heat transfer coefficient for the cooling or freezing operation. This project reviewed heat transfer data for the cooling and/or freezing of foods. A total of 777 cooling curves for 295 food items were obtained from an industrial survey and a unique iterative algorithm, utilizing the concept of ‘equivalent heat transfer dimensionality’, was developed to obtain heat transfer coefficients from these cooling curves. Nine Nusselt–Reynolds–Prandtl correlations were developed from a selection of the 777 heat transfer coefficients resulting from this algorithm, as well as 144 heat transfer coefficients for 13 food items, collected from the literature. The data and correlations resulting from this project will be used by designers of cooling and freezing systems for foods. This information will make possible a more accurate determination of cooling and freezing times and corresponding refrigeration loads. Such information is important in the design and operation of cooling and freezing facilities and will be of immediate usefulness to engineers involved in the design and operation of such systems.  相似文献

A surface-micromachined micro-electro-mechanical-system (MEMS) process has been used to demonstrate multiple-input chemical sensing using selectively coated cantilever arrays. Cantilever motion due to absorption-induced stress was readout using a custom-designed, eight-channel integrated circuit. Combined hydrogen and mercury vapor detection was achieved with a palm-sized, self-powered module with spread-spectrum telemetry reporting.  相似文献

A previously described porous organic polymer (NU-POP-1) was evaluated against four representative chemical threats: ammonia, cyanogen chloride, sulfur dioxide, and octane. Ammonia, cyanogen chloride, and sulfur dioxide are examples of toxic industrial chemicals (TICs) spanning the range from highly basic to strong-acid forming substances, while octane is used to assess physical adsorption capacity. Experiments were carried out using a microbreakthrough test apparatus, which measures the adsorption capacity at saturation and gives an indication of the strength of adsorption. The NU-POP-1 material exhibited substantial removal capabilities against the majority of the toxic chemicals, with capacities as high as or better than an activated, impregnated carbon. The ability to remove the highly volatile toxic chemicals ammonia and cyanogen chloride was intriguing, as these chemicals typically require reactive moieities for removal. The present work presents a benchmark for toxic chemical removal, and future work will focus on incorporating functional groups targeting the toxic chemicals of interest.  相似文献

Within immunization programs supported by the World Health Organization, current practice is to use a vial as the basic unit for managing vaccine inventories at the clinic level. In addition to being inconvenient, this has the potential to induce errors in the ordering process. We propose alternative ordering policies based on using inner pack quantities corresponding to secondary vaccine packaging and draw upon visual management, simplified inventory tracking, better housekeeping, and other lean related concepts that have been used in the manufacturing sector to simplify and improve the vaccine inventory management system. We present analyses that show that the proposed polices only require very modest increases in fixed storage and transport requirements.  相似文献

A method to overcome the brittleness of poly (l-lactic acid) (PLLA) by kinetically trapping a continuous low Tg amorphous phase is presented. This morphology is accomplished by exploiting the significant difference in the crystallization temperatures of PLLA vs its stereocomplex with the poly (d-lactic acid) (PDLA) isomer. In our studies, the D isomer is the end block of a triblock copolymer with a configuration of the form PDLAn–Soft Blockm–PDLAn. As demonstrated in this study, when blended with PLLA, the obtained morphology, and improvement in the sample toughness and flexibility, strongly depend on the miscibility of the midblock in the triblock copolymer with the matrix PLLA. The difference in the chemical nature of the midblock clearly affected the stereocomplex crystallization between the PDLA end blocks, the PLLA matrix polymer, and the morphology formed. It is found that the miscible midblock gives rise to a soft continuous amorphous phase while in the case of an immiscible midblock, a glassy phase separated amorphous phase is formed. Dramatically different physical properties can be obtained for various PLLA/triblock copolymer blends giving access to tough, yet flexible, semicrystalline PLLA blends.  相似文献

Efficient driver drowsiness detection at moderate levels of drowsiness   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Previous research on driver drowsiness detection has focused primarily on lane deviation metrics and high levels of fatigue. The present research sought to develop a method for detecting driver drowsiness at more moderate levels of fatigue, well before accident risk is imminent. Eighty-seven different driver drowsiness detection metrics proposed in the literature were evaluated in two simulated shift work studies with high-fidelity simulator driving in a controlled laboratory environment. Twenty-nine participants were subjected to a night shift condition, which resulted in moderate levels of fatigue; 12 participants were in a day shift condition, which served as control. Ten simulated work days in the study design each included four 30-min driving sessions, during which participants drove a standardized scenario of rural highways. Ten straight and uneventful road segments in each driving session were designated to extract the 87 different driving metrics being evaluated. The dimensionality of the overall data set across all participants, all driving sessions and all road segments was reduced with principal component analysis, which revealed that there were two dominant dimensions: measures of steering wheel variability and measures of lateral lane position variability. The latter correlated most with an independent measure of fatigue, namely performance on a psychomotor vigilance test administered prior to each drive. We replicated our findings across eight curved road segments used for validation in each driving session. Furthermore, we showed that lateral lane position variability could be derived from measured changes in steering wheel angle through a transfer function, reflecting how steering wheel movements change vehicle heading in accordance with the forces acting on the vehicle and the road. This is important given that traditional video-based lane tracking technology is prone to data loss when lane markers are missing, when weather conditions are bad, or in darkness. Our research findings indicated that steering wheel variability provides a basis for developing a cost-effective and easy-to-install alternative technology for in-vehicle driver drowsiness detection at moderate levels of fatigue.  相似文献

Exact closed-form solutions describing the transient and steady-state temperature of a lumped mass, linearly coupled to a fixed-temperature boundary and radiatively coupled to a second fixed-temperature boundary, with a constant impressed heat load, are derived.
