As a test of the 2-dimensional model of work stressors, the present study proposed differential relationships between challenge stressors and hindrance stressors and role-based performance, which were expected to be moderated by organizational support. In a sample of 215 employees across 61 offices of a state agency, the authors obtained a positive relationship between challenge stressors and role-based performance and a negative relationship between hindrance stressors and role-based performance. In addition, organizational support moderated the relationship between challenge stressors and role-based performance but did not moderate the relationship between hindrance stressors and role-based performance. This suggests that organizations would benefit from increasing challenges in the workplace as long as they are supportive of employees and removing hindrances. Economically and culturally important salmonid species often compete with Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) released from stocking programs or that escaped during aquaculture production. Such competitive interactions may lower the individual fitness of these species by reducing survival and body growth. Here, we exposed juvenile brown trout (S. trutta), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), Chinook salmon (O. tshawytscha), and coho salmon (O. kisutch) to juvenile Atlantic salmon in artificial streams for 10 months. Survival and fitness-related traits of the four species were not negatively impacted by the presence of Atlantic salmon. The results suggest that brown trout and rainbow trout have better competitive abilities than Atlantic salmon, and that Chinook salmon and coho salmon have limited competitive interactions with Atlantic salmon. Although we discuss certain environmental conditions that can favor Atlantic salmon as a competitor at the juvenile life stage, Atlantic salmon may have little impact on the productivity of these four species.  相似文献

Adipose tissue discs were coinoculated with Brochothrix thermosphacta and homologous bacteriophages (phages) to determine the effects these had on phage multiplication, bacterial growth, and off-odor development during storage at 2 degrees C or under simulated retail display at 6 degrees C. In the presence of about 10(5) bacteria/cm2 and an equivalent number of phages, there was a 3-log increase in phage numbers and a 2-log decrease in bacterial numbers, and objectionable off-odors were suppressed during refrigerated storage. Up to 68% of the surviving bacterial population were resistant to phages. The storage life of adipose tissue could be increased from 4 days in controls to 8 days in phage-treated samples by preventing the development of off-odors associated with the growth of B. thermosphacta. Phages may provide a novel approach to extending the storage quality of chilled meats.  相似文献

Propagation losses are determined for 100 microm x 100 microm square, hollow waveguides constructed from glass capillaries. The small size makes it possible to observe optical effects not easily seen with larger waveguides. The depletion of higher-order even modes creates a large, nonlinear loss. Over a distance of a meter the loss approaches the smaller, linear value expected for the fundamental mode. Additionally, the lowest two even modes beat to produce an oscillatory loss with a period of approximately 2 cm. Making the focal radius 0.35 the waveguide width minimizes these two effects. In a related study, 50-microm waveguides embossed in polydimethylsiloxane are shown to have losses similar to glass capillaries.  相似文献

The conventional Lorenz-Mie formalism is extended to the case for a coated sphere embedded in an absorbing medium. The apparent and inherent scattering cross sections of a particle, derived from the far field and near field, respectively, are different if the host medium is absorptive. The effect of absorption within the host medium on the phase-matrix elements associated with polarization depends on the dielectric properties of the scattering particle. For the specific cases of a soot particle coated with a water layer and an ice sphere containing an air bubble, the phase-matrix elements -P12/P11 and P33/P11 are unique if the shell is thin. The radiative transfer equation for a multidisperse particle system embedded within an absorbing medium is discussed. Conventional multiple-scattering computational algorithms can be applied if scaled apparent single-scattering properties are applied.  相似文献

A new electrode configuration for microchip capillary electrophoresis (CE) with electrochemical (EC) detection is described. This approach makes it possible to place the working electrode directly in the separation channel. The "in-channel" EC detection was accomplished without the use of a decoupler through the utilization of a specially designed, electrically isolated potentiostat. The effect of the working electrode position on the separation performance (in terms of plate height and peak skew) of poly(dimethylsiloxane)-based microchip CEEC devices was evaluated by comparing the more commonly used end-channel configuration with this new in-channel approach. Using catechol as the test analyte, it was found that in-channel EC detection decreased the total plate height by a factor of 4.6 and lowered the peak skew by a factor of 1.3. A similar trend was observed for the small, inorganic ion nitrite. Furthermore, a fluorescent and electrochemically active amino acid derivative was used to directly compare the separation performance of in-channel EC detection to that of a widely used laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) detection scheme. In this case, it was found that the plate height and peak skew for both detection schemes were essentially equal, and the separation performance of in-channel EC detection is comparable to LIF detection.  相似文献

Growing public concerns about the environmental consequences of waste disposal have led to an increase in recycling efforts. In many communities, curbside collection programs have been instituted for collecting recyclables from households for transfer to material recovery facilities. In most programs the cost of collection is the dominant cost. Despite the high cost and environmental importance of collecting recyclables from households, most municipal collection systems are designed and operated without a clear understanding of what factors drive those costs and how they might be reduced. In this paper, models for determining truck configurations, as well as optimal compartment sizes for recyclables collection are developed. Constraints arising from the operation of the trucks are formulated, and solution schemes are presented. In addition, a procedure for optimally partitioning a vehicle used to collect source-separated material is discussed. Several scenario based planning approaches are developed. Use of the truck sizing models as an industry decision tool and the associated benefits of applying the truck sizing models and the solution methodology to a contract based collection program are also discussed.  相似文献

This study examined the relationship between the similarity and accuracy of team mental models and compared the extent to which each predicted team performance. The relationship between team ability composition and team mental models was also investigated. Eighty-three dyadic teams worked on a complex skill task in a 2-week training protocol. Results indicated that although similarity and accuracy of team mental models were significantly related, accuracy was a stronger predictor of team performance. In addition, team ability was more strongly related to the accuracy than to the similarity of team mental models and accuracy partially mediated the relationship between team ability and team performance, but similarity did not. Bio-optical algorithms for remote estimation of chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl) in case-1 waters exploit the upwelling radiation in the blue and green spectral regions. In turbid productive waters other constituents, that vary independently of Chl, absorb and scatter light in these spectral regions. As a consequence, the accurate estimation of Chl in turbid productive waters has so far not been feasible from satellite sensors. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the extent to which near-infrared (NIR) to red reflectance ratios could be applied to the Sea Wide Field-of-View Sensor (SeaWiFS) and the Moderate Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) to estimate Chl in productive turbid waters. To achieve this objective, remote-sensing reflectance spectra and relevant water constituents were collected in 251 stations over lakes and reservoirs with a wide variability in optical parameters (i.e. 4 ≤ Chl ≤ 240 mg m− 3; 18 ≤ Secchi disk depth ≤ 308 cm). SeaWiFS and MODIS NIR and red reflectances were simulated by using the in-situ hyperspectral data. The proposed algorithms predicted Chl with a relative random uncertainty of approximately 28% (average bias between − 1% and − 4%). The effects of reflectance uncertainties on the predicted Chl were also analyzed. It was found that, for realistic ranges of Rrs uncertainties, Chl could be estimated with a precision better than 40% and an accuracy better than ± 35%. These findings imply that, provided that an atmospheric correction scheme specific for the red-NIR spectral region is available, the extensive database of SeaWiFS and MODIS images could be used to quantitatively monitor Chl in turbid productive waters.  相似文献

In a gene expression data matrix, a bicluster is a submatrix of genes and conditions that exhibits a high correlation of expression activity across both rows and columns. The problem of locating the most significant bicluster has been shown to be NP-complete. Heuristic approaches such as Cheng and Church's greedy node deletion algorithm have been previously employed. It is to be expected that stochastic search techniques such as evolutionary algorithms or simulated annealing might improve upon such greedy techniques. In this paper we show that an approach based on simulated annealing is well suited to this problem, and we present a comparative evaluation of simulated annealing and node deletion on a variety of datasets. We show that simulated annealing discovers more significant biclusters in many cases. Furthermore, we also test the ability of our technique to locate biologically verifiable biclusters within an annotated set of genes.  相似文献
