Nutrient Recommendations for Growing-up Milk: A Report of an Expert Panel

Utilization of expert recommendations in the development of food and beverage nutritional profiles represents an opportunity to merge science and food manufacturing to deliver nutritionally optimized products into the marketplace. This report details expert panel guidelines for the design of a nutritional product for children one to six years of age. This interaction demonstrates the essential synergy between academia and food manufacturers in translating nutrient recommendations to food for their delivery to a population. Important factors for such translation are the identification of applicable nutrient recommendations and selection of an appropriate delivery matrix. This report demonstrates the translation of expert nutritional recommendations to a milk-based product for children—one to six years of age.     

Study of nanofiber scaffolds of PAA,PAA/CS,and PAA/ALG for its potential use in biotechnological applications

In recent times, electrospun nanofibers have been widely studied from several biotechnological approaches; in this work, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) solutions mixed with chitosan and alginate were electrospun and characterized to determine the behavior of these fibers when used in combination with bacteria, different samples were incubated with the bacterial strains: Streptomyces spp., Micromonospora spp., and Escherichia coli and a OD600 test was performed. The formation of nanofibers via electrospinning and the physicochemical properties of the obtained fibers were evaluated. Results showed that the presence of chitosan enhanced the thermal stability of PAA, since PAA/alginate fibers lost 5% of their mass at 41°C, whereas PAA/chitosan lost this amount at around 125°C. The fibers demonstrated suitable characteristics to be used as a bacteria bioreactor.     

Estimation of Bid Functions for Location Choice and Price Modeling with a Latent Variable Approach

A new approach for the estimation of bid-rent functions for residential location choice is proposed. The method is based on the bid-auction approach and considers that the expected maximum bid of the auction is a latent variable that can be related to observed price indicators through a measurement equation. The method has the advantage of allowing for the estimation of the parameters of the bid function that explain the heterogeneous preferences of households for location while simultaneously adjusting the expected maximum bid to reproduce realistic values. The model is applied and validated for a case study on the city of Brussels. Results show that the proposed model outperforms other methods for bid-rent estimation, both in terms of real estate prices and spatial distribution of agents, especially when detailed data describing the real estate goods and their prices is not available.     

I-Competere: Using applied intelligence in search of competency gaps in software project managers

People in software development teams are crucial in order to gain and retain strategic advantage inside a highly competitive market. As a result, human factors have gained attention in the software industry. Software Project Managers are decisive to achieve project success. A competent project manager is capable of solving any problem that an organization may encounter, regardless of its complexity. This paper presents I-Competere which is a tool developed to forecast competence gaps in key management personnel by predicting planning and scheduling competence levels. Based on applied intelligence techniques, I-Competere allows the forecast and anticipation of competence needs thus articulating personnel development tools and techniques. The results of the test, using several artificial neural networks, are more than promising and show prediction accuracy.     

Influence of Temperature on the Dynamic Tensile Behavior of Zirconium

The influence of temperature on the dynamic tensile behavior of Zr has been investigated. Bullet-shaped Zr samples with two different textures were dynamically extruded at room temperature and 523 K (250 °C). A higher ductility was measured for samples deformed at elevated temperature as compared to those extruded at room temperature. This difference in ductility is discussed in terms of zirconium’s ability to accommodate plastic deformation via thermally enhanced slip activity, as evidenced by examination of the deformed microstructures.
