Greater task difficulty amplifies the facilitatory effect of des-glycinamide arginine vasopressin on appetitively motivated learning.

39 3–6 mo old male Long-Evans rats were trained in a discrete-trial forward autoshaping paradigm to touch an extended lever to earn food pellets. Reinforcement was delivered either simultaneously with or 6 sec after lever retraction, which occurred either noncontingently after 15 sec or when the Ss touched the lever. Treatment with subcutaneous des-glycinamide arginine vasopressin (DGAVP [15 μg/kg]) 1 hr before sessions increased the rate of acquisition of the extended-lever-touch response and also facilitated development of intertrial (adjunctive) nose poking. The effects of the peptide were more robust in the more difficult delayed reinforcement task. Results are consistent with previous findings that DGAVP lacks the classical peripheral activity of vasopressin. In both experiments, peptide treatment was terminated before asymptotic levels of performance were attained; the continued facilitation of acquisition in treated groups suggests a specific enhancement of learning and/or enhanced memory retrieval. Data collection: evaluation of a pilot model

The overall purpose of this study was to explore nurses' feelings about the applicability and adequacy of a pilot model of nursing assessment (PMNA) developed for coronary care units (CCU) in order to obtain data that could help in establishing a definitive model. The evaluation, performed by 11 CCU nurses, showed that they considered the development and implementation of PMNA as valuable, and that its design was adequate for interviewing cardiac patients. These results will be employed in the elaboration of a definitive model of nursing assessment.     

UPGRADING OF SUGAR CANE BAGASSE BY THERMAL PROCESSES. 4. COAL CO-PROCESSING USING SUGAR CANE BAGASSE OIL AS SOLVENT

In the present work, coal co-processing with sugar cane bagasse oil was studied for the first time. Sugar cane bagasse was chosen due to its great offer, since it is a residue in the process of a large project named PROALCOOL aiming the producing ethanolfrom sugarcane. In addition, the liquefaction of sugar cane bagasse with monoethanolamine was already developed in our laboratory showing good results. Four coal samples were studied. The yields of the total conversion and the oil productions were obtained in order to evaluate the efficiency of the liquefaction process studied.     

Expression of smooth-muscle actin in cultured cells from human plasmacytoid myoepithelioma

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic sclerotherapy (ST), widely used as treatment of bleeding esophageal varices, might cause motility disturbances of the esophagus as well as mucosal damage. We performed this study to evaluate the long-term effects of repeated sclerotherapy on esophageal motility and mucosa. METHODS: Ten patients with liver cirrhosis and bleeding esophageal varices treated with repeated ST were evaluated after the last ST, median 52 months, by esophageal manometry and gastroscopy where forceps biopsies were taken. RESULTS: We found a significant difference in the distal esophageal sphincter intraabdominal length. The distal esophageal sphincter pressure was somewhat lower in the ST group although the difference did not reach statistical significance. There was infiltration of neutrophil leukocytes in biopsies from four patients and normal findings in the rest. CONCLUSIONS: Long-term follow-up evaluation showed statistically longer distal esophageal intraabdominal length in the ST group. No mucosal alterations were found at the histopathological investigation.     

Design and development of a multichannel potentiometer for monitoring an electrode array and its application in flow analysis

A versatile potentiometer that works with electrode arrays in flow injection and/or monosegmented flow systems is described. The potentiometer is controlled by a microcomputer that allows individual, sequential multiplexed or random accesses to eight electrodes while employing only one reference electrode. The instrument was demonstrated by monitoring an array of seven flow-through ion-selective electrodes for Ag(+) and for three electrodes for Cl(-), Ca(2+) and K(+). The figures of merit of the individual and multiplexed (summed) readings of the electrode array were compared. The absolute standard deviation of the measurements made by summing the potential of two or more electrodes was maintained constant, thus improving the precision of the measurements. This result shows that an attempt to combine the signals of the electrodes to produce a more intense signal in the Hadamard strategy is feasible and accompanied by a proportional improvement in the precision of individual measurements. The preliminary tests suggest that the system can allow for 270 determinations per hour, with a linear range from 1.0 x 10(-2) to 1.0 x 10(-4) mol l(-1) for the three di inverted exclamation markerent analytes. Detection limits were estimated as 3.1 x 10(-5), 3.0 x 10(-6) and 1.0 x 10(-5) mol l(-1) for Cl(-), Ca(2+) and K(+), respectively.

In the present work, the chemical characterization of the oils obtained from liquefaction of different coals with sugar cane bagasse oil and also from the liquefaction of coal with monoethanolamine are presented. Characterization of the oil samples was done with the add of spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques, including UV-vis, FTIR, NMR, preparative liquid chromatography (PLC) and high resolution gas chromatography (HRGC).     

Use of postconsumer polyethylene in blends with polyamide 6: Effects of the extrusion method and the compatibilizer

Blends of polyamide and high‐density polyethylene show adequate properties for a large range of applications: they are used for the production of filaments, containers, and molding resins. The effect of the addition of 2 wt % of a compatibilizer, maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene, to the blend was studied and compared to the use of postconsumer polyethylene. The samples were extruded with single‐ and twin‐screw extruders with 25, 50, or 75 wt % f polyethylene, and the test specimens, molded by injection, were characterized by stress–strain tests, thermal properties, and morphologies. Processing the blends with postconsumer polyethylene in both extruders improved the mechanical properties in comparison to the blends processed with high‐density polyethylene and the compatibilizer. The morphologies of these blends showed that there was a decrease in the domain size of the disperse phase with the use of the compatibilizer or postconsumer polyethylene. The results indicate that for this blend, postconsumer polyethylene substituted, with advantages, for the necessity of a compatibilizer and the use of the high‐density polyethylene. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Psychotherapeutic techniques with treatment-resistant adolescents.

Psychotherapy with adolescent clients (ACs) is difficult for at least 2 reasons: ACs frequently do not trust adults and ACs are often poorly motivated for treatment. Consequently there may be significant problems eliciting the cooperation needed to implement successfully various psychotherapeutic treatment techniques (PTTs) with ACs in general, and treatment-resistant ACs in particular. Several PTTs designed to capture ACs' attention, further the psychotherapeutic alliance, and facilitate cooperation are presented. PTTs include siding with the AC, teaching strategic skills, exploring moral dilemmas, wagering on cognitions and behaviors, and alternative communication strategies. Case illustrations are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of PTTs. It is recommended that psychotherapists consistently review the quality of their relationship with ACs to facilitate successful implementation of PTTs.
