DC photoplethysmography in the evaluation of sympathetic vasomotor responses

The d.c. component of the photoplethsmographic signal was used to determine the response of the finger vasculature to three standard tests of vasomotor function: (1) an inspiratory gasp (IG), (2) immersion of the contralateral hand in ice water (IW), and (3) the Valsalva manoeuvre. The vasoconstrictor response to the first two of these stimuli could be measured in all of 25 normal subjects. The response to the Valsalva manoeuvre could not be detected consistently. Seven patients with known sympathetic autonomic dysfunction showed no response to either IG or IW. In 30 patients with diabetes mellitus of over 10 years duration, 46.7% had no response to IG, and 20% had no response to IW. Absent responses correlated with abnormal autonomic cardiovascular reflexes, with absent sympathetic skin responses and with the severity of peripheral somatic neuropathy. The d.c. photoplethysmographic determination of the vasoconstrictor response in the finger after a deep inspiratory gasp and after ice water immersion offers an additional measure of the function of small (2 mu-6 mu) peripheral nerve fibres. Because of variability in the amplitude of the responses in normals, only an absent response should be accepted as abnormal.

The effect of composition on the superconducting transition temperature in NbNxOy

The existence of superconducting, FCC, nitrogen-rich niobium oxynitride thin films is reported. The superconducting transition temperature, T_c, is observed to increase as the composition approaches NbN_0.90O_0.02.     

A critique of the fire test methods used to assess individual products involved in the Artane fire

Standard fire tests on individual items involved in the Artane fire in an attempt to investigate their fire performance were found to be unsuitable. The reasons for this and for adopting an ad hoc approach are discussed.     

Grouping knowledge-base data into distributable clusters

Knowledge-base data are constructed from domains and subdomains of specific problem or application areas. Usually, the domains are not necessarily distinct because the original problem may have many interrelated components. As a result, the processing of the data becomes lengthy and windable. However, KB data can be reorganized into groups or clusters using some common relational information of the data objects. The reorganization process isolates the data and localizes the interdependency within the clusters, leaving weak linkages between clusters. Therefore, the clusters offer opportunities for mapping the data into distributed or parallel processing environments to facilitate a computational efficiency. The focus of this paper is on methods for structuring, partitioning, and clustering KB data for distributed computations.
