Large datasets are common in chemical and environmental engineering applications and tools for their analysis are in great demand. Here, the outputs of a series of fluorescence spectroscopy analyses are utilised to demonstrate the application of the self-organising map (SOM) technique for data analysis. Fluorescence spectroscopy is a well-established technique of organic matter fingerprinting in water. The technique can provide detailed information on the physico-chemical properties of water. However, analysis of fluorescence spectra requires the application of robust statistical and computational data pre-processing and analysis tools.This paper presents a tutorial for training engineering postgraduate researchers in the use of SOM techniques using MATLAB®. Via a tutorial, the application of SOM to fluorescence spectra and, in particular, the characterisation of organic matter removal in water treatment, is presented. The tutorial presents a step-by-step example of the application of SOM to fluorescence data analysis and includes the source code for MATLAB®, together with presentation and discussion of the results. With this tutorial we hope to popularise this robust pattern recognition technique for fluorescence data analysis and large data sets in general, and also to provide educational practitioners with a novel tool with which to train engineering students in SOM. 相似文献

Due to the growing stock of torrent control structures and decreasing investments, the protection level can be reduced in the long term. Therefore, the focus of the future investments has been shifted on efficiency improvement and maintenance of existing structures. The maintenance of the existing structures is necessary to ensure safety from natural hazards, which are increasing as a consequence of the climate change. Due to the increasing number of structures, there is a strong need to develop a good maintenance management for these infrastructure works. This study is based on data from the condition rating programme of the Austrian Service for Torrent and Avalanche Control. For the structures relevant in this work, 75,343 records were available. The data were examined for different construction type and construction materials. The reliability of the structures was determined by means of the Markov chain. The study describes a homogeneous Markov chain model formed by the data of the condition rating. The result of this study is a proposal for a time to failure (TTF) and a time to repair (TTR) for several construction types with different construction materials as well as the time-dependent use of construction materials in the sector of the Austrian torrent control infrastructure. 相似文献

Flaxseeds have been recently in focus due to the antioxidant capacity of some of their compounds. However, there is a lack of easily accessible information concerning their activity against lipid oxidation in food systems. Therefore, the aim of the study was to determine the effect of defatted meals (DFM) and the aqueous extracts (AFE) obtained from brown and golden flaxseeds on lipid oxidation in pork meatballs. Fatty acid composition, peroxide value (PV), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and cholesterol content were monitored during 6 months of freezer storage. Cholesterol oxidation products were identified and quantified. Both DFM and AFE limited fatty acid and cholesterol oxidation during meatball storage. Their antioxidant effect depended on flax variety (brown or golden) and preparation type (DFM or AFE). Lower level of PV and TBARS, compared with the ones with AFE, were noted in meatballs with DFM. Both DFM and AFE, from the brown seed variety, protect the lipids against oxidation to a higher extent. During the storage, a cholesterol degradation was observed. AFE (particularly from the brown variety) limited changes in cholesterol content. Moreover, they stabilized fatty acid composition of stored meatballs. The present investigation reports on the application of a new antioxidant activity assay for the examination of flavonoids. It has been shown that the high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection (HPLC–ED) measurements allow to obtain additional information about the antioxidative properties of pure compounds by measuring their half-wave potential, the chromatographic peak height, and the product of the peak height and exponent of potential. In comparison to the classical electrochemical measurements, the HPLC–ED is characterized by a much smaller detection limit. The results were compared with the standard photometric measurement based on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radicals. The possible antioxidant activity forecasting is also discussed. 相似文献

The rumen is a complex microbial system of substantial importance in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and feed efficiency. This study proposes combining metagenomic and host genomic data for selective breeding of the cow hologenome toward reduced methane emissions. We analyzed nanopore long reads from the rumen metagenome of 437 Holstein cows from 14 commercial herds in 4 northern regions in Spain. After filtering, data were treated as compositional. The large complexity of the rumen microbiota was aggregated, through principal component analysis (PCA), into few principal components (PC) that were used as proxies of the core metagenome. The PCA allowed us to condense the huge and fuzzy taxonomical and functional information from the metagenome into a few PC. Bivariate animal models were applied using these PC and methane production as phenotypes. The variability condensed in these PC is controlled by the cow genome, with heritability estimates for the first PC of ~0.30 at all taxonomic levels, with a large probability (>83%) of the posterior distribution being >0.20 and with the 95% highest posterior density interval (95%HPD) not containing zero. Most genetic correlation estimates between PC1 and methane were large (≥0.70), with most of the posterior distribution (>82%) being >0.50 and with its 95%HPD not containing zero. Enteric methane production was positively associated with relative abundance of eukaryotes (protozoa and fungi) through the first component of the PCA at phylum, class, order, family, and genus. Nanopore long reads allowed the characterization of the core rumen metagenome using whole-metagenome sequencing, and the purposed aggregated variables could be used in animal breeding programs to reduce methane emissions in future generations. 相似文献
