The authors explored the effect of Parkinson's disease (PD) on the generation and maintenance of response readiness in a simple reaction time task. They compared performance of idiopathic PD patients without dementia, age-matched controls, and younger controls over short (1-, 3-, and 6-s) and long (12- and 18-s) foreperiod intervals. After each trial, the authors probed memory for visual information that also had to be maintained during the trial interval. Patients and controls did not differ overall in their ability to maintain readiness over long delays. However, within the PD group only, errors in maintaining visual information were correlated with difficulty in maintaining readiness, suggesting that systems impaired in PD may facilitate the maintenance of processing in both motor and cognitive domains. Reports an error in "Prospective Relations Between Bulimic Pathology, Depression, and Substance Abuse: Unpacking Comorbidity in Adolescent Girls" by Eric Stice, Emily M. Burton and Heather Shaw (Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 2004[Feb], Vol 72[1], 62-71). The findings of Leon, Fulkerson, Perry, Keel, and Klump ("Three to four year prospective evaluation of personality and behavioral risk factors for later disordered eating in adolescent girls and boys," Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 1999, Vol. 28, No. 2, pp. 181-196), cited on page 62, were incorrectly reported. Leon et al. (1999) found that the latent variable of negative affect/attitudes determined at study entrance significantly correlated with final year eating disorder risk score when conducted with the full sample and when removing Time 1 high eating disorder risk subjects. This latent variable consisted of the GBI Depression, MPQ Negative Emotionality, EDI Ineffectiveness, EDI Interoceptive Awareness, and EDI Body Dissatisfaction scales. A subsequent univariate analysis of Time 1 Negative Emotionality scale score on Time 3 eating disorder risk, adjusting for initial eating disorder risk score, showed a nonsignificant effect size (Stice, E. [2002]. Risk and maintenance factors for eating pathology: A meta-analytic review. Psychological Bulletin, 128, 825-848). To elucidate the processes that contribute to the comorbidity between bulimic pathology, depression, and substance abuse, the authors tested the temporal relations between these disturbances with prospective data from adolescent girls (N = 496). Multivariate analyses indicated that depressive symptoms predicted onset of bulimic pathology but not of substance abuse, bulimic symptoms predicted onset of depression but not of substance abuse, and substance abuse symptoms predicted onset of depression but not of bulimic pathology. Results suggest that the comorbidity arises because certain disorders are risk factors for the other disorders. Findings also provide support for select etiologic theories and further establish the clinical significance of these conditions by showing that they increase risk for onset of other psychiatric disturbances. Important asymmetries between self-perception and social perception arise from the simple fact that other people's actions, judgments, and priorities sometimes differ from one's own. This leads people not only to make more dispositional inferences about others than about themselves (E. E. Jones & R. E. Nisbett, 1972) but also to see others as more susceptible to a host of cognitive and motivational biases. Although this blind spot regarding one's own biases may serve familiar self-enhancement motives, it is also a product of the phenomenological stance of naive realism. It is exacerbated, furthermore, by people's tendency to attach greater credence to their own introspections about potential influences on judgment and behavior than they attach to similar introspections by others. The authors review evidence, new and old, of this asymmetry and its underlying causes and discuss its relation to other psychological phenomena and to interpersonal and intergroup conflict. Speech Recognition is frequently cited as a potential remedy to distraction resulting from drivers' operation of in-vehicle devices. This position typically assumes that the introduction of speech recognition will result in reduced cognitive workload and improved driving performance. Past research neither fully supports nor fully discounts this assumption. However, it is difficult to compare many of these studies, due to differences in device operation tasks, the pacing of those tasks, speech recognition system performance, and system interface designs. In an effort to directly address the effect of voice recognition on driver distraction, the present authors developed a capability to manipulate the performance characteristics of a speech recognition system through a Wizard of Oz speech recognition system and installed this system in a simulated driving environment. The sensitivity of the simulated driving environment and speech recognition accuracy manipulation were evaluated in an initial study comparing driver cognitive workload and driving performance during self-paced simulated operation of a personal digital assistant (PDA) during no PDA use, manual control of the PDA, and speech control of the PDA. In the Speech PDA condition, speech recognition accuracy was varied between drivers. Analysis of drivers' emergency braking response times and rated cognitive workload revealed significantly lower cognitive demand and better performance in the No PDA condition when compared to the Manual PDA condition. The Speech PDA condition resulted in response times and rated cognitive workload levels that were between the No PDA and Manual PDA conditions, but not significantly different from either of these conditions. Further analysis of emergency braking performance revealed a non-significant trend towards better performance in conjunction with higher speech recognition accuracy levels. The potential for reducing driver distraction through the careful development and evaluation of speech recognition systems is discussed.  相似文献

The use of fluorescent probes that allow visualization of leukocyte-endothelial cell (EC) interactions has greatly informed our understanding of leukocyte recruitment. However, effects of these agents on the biological functions of leukocytes are poorly described, leading to concerns about the interpretation of such data. Here we used two flow-based neutrophil adhesion assays to compare the effects of phase contrast illumination (PCI) with high intensity illumination (HII) used for fluorescent microscopy, in the presence or absence of five commonly used fluorochromes. Isolated neutrophils were either (1) perfused across P-selectin to establish a population of rolling cells, which were subsequently activated with fMLP; or (2) perfused across EC activated with TNF-alpha. In the absence of fluorescent dyes, HII did not affect levels of leukocyte adhesion; however, subsequent neutrophil behavior was dramatically altered when compared with cells under PCI, for example, dramatically reducing their migration velocities. In the presence of fluorescent dyes, the effects of HII were exacerbated, although the precise nature of the biological effects of these probes was agent specific. Thus, for the first time, our experiments describe the effects of fluorescent microscopy on the separate stages of the neutrophil recruitment process and reveal a previously unsuspected effect of HII on neutrophil migration.  相似文献

Conventionally, organically, and locally grown varieties of carrot, tomato, rhubarb, raspberry, strawberry, and bell peppers were analyzed by differential pulse voltammetry to determine the impact of cultivation conditions on produce antioxidant content. The potential (indicating antioxidant activity) and area (indicating antioxidant capacity) of the primary peaks were evaluated. Overall, no consistent trends were observed across cultivation conditions, suggesting that cultivation conditions have minimal impact on antioxidant content. This study revealed differential pulse voltammetry to be a sensitive and rapid method for antioxidant determination, with a detection and quantitation limit of 8.38 × 10?5 and 2.79 × 10?4 mol/L, respectively.  相似文献

The redbay ambrosia beetle, Xyleborus glabratus, is an invasive wood-boring beetle that has become established in the southeastern United States. The beetle transmits the causal pathogen of lethal laurel wilt to susceptible host trees, which include redbay, an important forest community species, and avocado, a valuable food crop. By examining odors of redbay wood, we developed an artificial lure that captured X. glabratus in redbay forests. Eucalyptol was a critical component of the blend for beetle attraction, and eucalyptol alone in large quantities attracted X. glabratus. Furthermore, eucalyptol stimulated boring by X. glabratus into paper arenas. The results suggest that eucalyptol contributes to host selection behavior of X. glabratus and may be useful for management of this pathogen vector.  相似文献

In spite of great advancements in multimedia data storage and communication technologies, compression of medical data remains challenging. This paper presents a novel compression method for the compression of medical images. The proposed method uses Ripplet transform to represent singularities along arbitrarily shaped curves and Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees encoder to encode the significant coefficients. The main objective of the proposed method is to provide high quality compressed images by representing images at different scales and directions and to achieve high compression ratio. Experimental results obtained on a set of medical images demonstrate that besides providing multiresolution and high directionality, the proposed method attains high Peak Signal to Noise Ratio and significant compression ratio as compared with conventional and state-of-art compression methods.  相似文献

The optimization of the manufacturing/assembly tolerances and processes in ITER Experimental Nuclear Fusion Device is one of the key tasks to optimize the fabrication cost, to prevent problems during assembly and to ensure that the critical homogeneity of the magnetic field and the positioning requirements of the plasma facing components can be achieved. This task is further complicated by the strong interplay among the various Tokamak systems, as for instance in the inner region of the machine where the clearances between Central Solenoid, Toroidal Field Coils, Thermal Shield, Vacuum Vessel and In-Vessel components have been minimized for their large influence on the magnetic flux and the overall machine cost.A 3D tolerance simulation analysis of ITER Tokamak machine has been developed based on 3DCS dedicated software. The dimensional variation model is representative of Tokamak functional tolerances and processes, predicting accurate values for the amount of variation on critical areas. In addition, dimensional simulations help to determine the key tolerances that contribute to a particular variation.This paper describes the current status of the Tokamak dimensional variation studies and its management plan, highlighting the status of compliance of allocated tolerances with input requirements. Management of risk issues and corrective actions are also described.  相似文献

Neuroinflammation is a component of age-related neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive decline. Saturated (SFA) and monounsaturated (MUFA) fatty acids are bioactive molecules that may play different extrinsic and intrinsic roles in neuroinflammation, serving as exogenous ligands for cellular receptors, or endogenous components of cell structural, energetic and signaling pathways. We determined the fatty acyl profile of BV2 microglial cells before and after acute activation with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). We also investigated the effect of SFA and MUFA pretreatment on the production of an invasive, neurotoxic phenotype in BV2 cells. Acute activation of BV2 microglia resulted in an increase in the relative content of SFA (12:0, 16:0, 18:0, 20:0, 22:0, and 24:0 increased significantly), and a relative decrease in the content of MUFA (16:1n7, 18:1n7, 18:1n9, 20:1n9, 24:1n9 decreased significantly). In agreement, the major stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD) isoform in BV2 cells, SCD2, was significantly down-regulated by LPS. We next treated cells with SFA (16:0 or 18:0) or MUFA (16:1n7 or 18:1n9), and found that levels of secreted IL6 were increased, as was secreted MMP9-mediated proteolytic activity. To test the functional significance, we treated SH-SY5Y neuronal cells with conditioned medium from BV2 cells pretreated with fatty acids, and found a small but significant induction of cell death. Our findings suggest differential intrinsic roles for SFA and MUFA in activated microglial cells, but similar extrinsic roles for these fatty acid species in inducing activation. Expansion of SFA is important during microglial cell activation, but either supplemental SFA or MUFA may contribute to chronic low-grade neuroinflammation.  相似文献
