Public relations—for what?

There is "increasing evidence of hostility to psychology that has appeared in the last few years. This hostility has cropped up often enough now so that it cannot be ignored." Some of this hostility has come from medical groups, some from labor unions, some from people in the commercial field, some from "our humanistic colleagues." Courses of the aroused hostility are discussed. The author is "not convinced that a little knowledge of psychology spread widely will alter very much the important forces influencing social change… . Psychology as an institution, as exemplified by our state and national associations, ought to confine itself to public relations at the level of the policy makers, and not try to become a large-scale educational enterprise." The Effects of Neutron Radiation on Second Breakdown and Thermal Behavior of Silicon Transistors

A method of measuring and the subsequent analysis of this data has indicated that the "thermal time constant" of silicon diffused transistors decreases with increasing neutron dosage. Emperically, it was noted that thermal time constant degradation constants, K?, can be assigned to all devices examined. For the silicon planar devices studied, degradation constants varied from 2.6 × 10-13cm2/neut for the radiation resistant devices, to 1.4 × 10-12 cm2/neut for other devices examined. By examining previous data for single diffused transistors the thermal time constant degradation factor was 2 × 10-11 cm2/neut. The conclusion of this report is that the "thermal time constant, which is related to second breakdown, effectively degrades upon exposure to neutron radiation, thereby decreasing the safe operating area of the device. However, the extent of degradation per dose may be predictable by data presented in the text.     

Statement by SPSSI on current IQ controversy: Heredity versus environment.

The Council for the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI) in response to A. R. Jensen (see record 1969-09740-001) states that little definitive evidence exists to confirm that racial differences in intelligence test scores (ITSCs) are innate. Defocus electron microscopy of multiphase polymers: use and misuse

Application of defocus microscopy to the imaging of multiphase polymers is investigated. Theoretical image contrast of ideally phase separated, model objects is predicted by application of the transfer theory of imaging. The calculations are in good agreement with observed images of a polypropylene film. Easy recognition of the cross-hatched structure of polypropylene, however, necessitates the use of very high defocus values. Application of this defocus technique to more complex systems causes problems. Defocused images of a polyurethane film are found to be indistinguishable from those of a carbon film or an amorphous polystyrene film, i.e. the image is dominated by the spatially filtered noise structure. It is suggested that previous electron-micrographs of domain structures of polyurethanes have been misinterpreted.     

Variable Partitioning and Scheduling for MPSoC with Virtually Shared Scratch Pad Memory

One of the most critical components that determine the success of an MPSoC based architecture is its on-chip memory. Scratch Pad Memory (SPM) is increasingly being applied to substitute cache as the on-chip memory of embedded MPSoCs due to its superior chip area, power consumption and timing predictability. SPM can be organized as a Virtually Shared SPM (VS-SPM) architecture that takes advantage of both shared and private SPM. However, making effective use of the VS-SPM architecture strongly depends on two inter-dependent problems: variable partitioning and task scheduling. In this paper, we decouple these two problems and solve them in phase-ordered manner. We propose two variable partitioning heuristics based on an initial schedule: High Access Frequency First (HAFF) variable partitioning and Global View Prediction (GVP) variable partitioning. Then, we present a loop pipeline scheduling algorithm known as Rotation Scheduling with Variable Partitioning (RSVP) to improve overall throughput. Our experimental results obtained on MiBench show that the average performance improvements over IDAS (Integrated Data Assignment with Scheduling) are 23.74% for HAFF and 31.91% for GVP on four-core MPSoC. The average schedule length generated by RSVP is 25.96% shorter than that of list scheduling with optimal variable partition.
