Improved Performance of Film-Riding Gas Seals Through Enhancement of Hydrodynamic Effects

Basic components of a spiral-groove, face-type gas seal are shown. Analyses of flow, of thermal environment and heat transfer were made to improve stability, decrease sensitivity to contaminants and reduce leakage. Analysis suggested reduced film thickness and the advantages of spiral-groove design over Rayleigh pad design for thin gas film operation. Experimental program started with static leakage tests to verify pressure deflections at various pressures; a 1000 h dynamic test followed where 114.3 mm (4.5 in.) diameter seals ran successfully at pressures up to 6.2 MPa (900 psig) and speeds up to 73.66 m.s.^?1 (14 500 fpm).     

Editor’s and president’s column.

After 10 years as editor of the Consulting Psychology Bulletin cum Consulting Psychology Journal, the time has come to pass the baton to the new editor, Dick Diedrich. This will be my last editor's column. Without getting maudlin, it has been a memorable 10 years for me and, I hope, the journal. Taking over a well-edited divisional newsletter from Paul Lloyd, I shared my vision of creating a journal devoted to consultation with the divisional leadership after several years on the job. Investigations on a permanent magnetic–hydrodynamic hybrid journal bearing

In the present work, a permanent magnetic–hydrodynamic hybrid journal bearing is developed. The force of the journal bearing comes from the hydrodynamic film and the permanent magnetic field. When a hydrodynamic film does not form, such as during starting and stopping a machine, the journal bearing relies on the magnetic force to support the rotor system. This paper studies a model of the permanent magnetic force and develops an experimental rig of the journal bearing. Experiments show that the hydrodynamic film force uncouples with the magnetic force in the journal bearing. Predictions from the model are compared with experimental data.     

President’s column.

Presents a discussion on various topics, including Division 13 membership; the changing format of the Division's journal, Consulting Psychology Journal; whether "consulting" might be considered as one of the proficiency skill areas to be explored by Division 13 in collaboration with the National School of Professional Psychology; and whether Division members are finding themselves expanding their professional services into consulting roles in response to the "health care revolution." President’s column.

Highlights some of the issues discussed at the midwinter meeting of the Executive Board and Committee Chairs of APA's Division 13 (Consulting Psychology). Topics covered include recognition of RHR International as they celebrate 50 years as a consulting firm, APA's convention program, and concern over the influx of clinical psychologists into the consulting role over the past several years. Editorial: Journal of Comparative Psychology.

Both continuity and change typically mark the changing of editors at a long-established journal with extended editorial terms. Change is inherent in any dynamic field and is independent of editorship, but editors have an influence that should be wielded in a fair, responsible, judicious, and scientifically rigorous manner, while inevitably reflecting their own perspectives and values. The Journal of Comparative Psychology will continue to publish exciting, fascinating, assessable, controversial, and well-written reports on research, be the topic traditional, interdisciplinary, applied, or one breaking risky new ground. Editorial standards must be high, but appropriate for various subfields, and as editor the author will try to make those judgments carefully. The author would also like to see more submissions of brief reports describing exciting developments as well as submissions on significant theoretical, conceptual, and methodological issues during his tenure as editor. Introduction to the premiere edition.

Play therapists are an extremely diverse lot. We come most often from the disciplines of psychology, psychiatry, social work, and education and adhere to theoretical points of view ranging from Jungian to ecosystemic to behavioral. When the creation of The International Journal of Play Therapy and a call for papers was announced in three different professional newsletters, authors from all of the above mentioned fields responded. Choosing which articles to include in this, the premiere issue, was difficult. The final selection is as representative of the entire spectrum of thought and practice current in our community as could be. 国内城市规划及规划相关期刊的评价研究——基于问卷访谈及统计分析

通过2011年10月至12月期间进行的针对三类评价者的问卷访谈,本文对37本城市规划及规划相关期刊进行了使用及评价分析。主要结论为：第一,研究者的背景会不同程度地影响其期刊使用;第二,对规划同行综合影响最大的是《城市规划学刊》、《城市规划》和《国际城市规划》三本期刊;第三,37本期刊的既有影响因子与同行评价结果之间不具有相关性,仅就城市规划和城市研究类的lO本期刊而言,其影响因子与同行评价呈较强的正相关性;第四,多个学科期刊介入规划问题有助于学科的交叉和创新发展;最后,规划期刊的建设发展需要在期刊定位、编排规范、运作程序等方面进行优化。
