Review of Forms of feeling: The heart of psychotherapy.

Reviews the book, Forms of feeling: The heart of psychotherapy by Robert F. Hobson. Robert Hobson calls this book his autobiography as a therapist. As such it provides interesting glimpses into some of his more meaningful sessions with clients, illuminating his approach to therapy and enabling the reader to see a master therapist at work. Hobson also presents a new method of therapy, which he calls the conversational model. On this level, his book is considerably less satisfying. Hobson succinctly outlines the general principles of the conversational model and basic skills required of the therapist, but in so doing offers essentially little new information, however valid the points may be. According to Hobson, the conversational model is designed for clients whose problems arise from disturbances in their significant relationships, and those problems are best solved not by talking about them but by being in a relationship such as therapy that provides "a special kind of friendship." Hobson puts great stress on the use of metaphorical language in therapy and learning how to use the language of art as well as of science. He relies heavily on literary quotations, prefacing each section with one or two, and liberally interspersing many more within the pages of text. The net result is not so much illuminating as it is wearisome, and the general tone is slightly pretentious and, when Hobson addresses his "dear Reader" directly, somewhat condescending. Effect of C/Ti ratio on the laser ignited self-propagating high-temperature synthesis reaction of Al-Ti-C system for fabricating TiC/Al composites

TiC/Al composite was successfully synthesized utilizing laser ignited self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) of Al-C-Ti system with the different C/Ti molar ratio. When the molar ratio of C to Ti is below 1:1 in the starting materials, in addition to fine TiC particulates, a large amount of Al₃Ti phase was found in the composites; however, when the molar ratio of C to Ti is 1:1 in the starting materials, the Al₃Ti phase was almost completely eliminated and the distribution of TiC particulates generally appeared to be more homogeneous throughout the products synthesized.

It seems clear that, for whatever reasons, the dementia of the Alzheimer type patient group (as well as other patient groups) exhibits behavior that is different from the normal control group. G. Storms, T. Dirikx, J. Saerens, S. Verstraeten, and P. P. De Deyn (2003) rightfully argue that the observed behavior (similarity judgments) does not tell us the source (cause) of the differences between the 2 groups. Rather, the focus of the study should be placed more on finding the ways the 2 groups are different. They also point out various methodological problems in some of the previous attempts to characterize the nature of the differences. Further methodological issues in G. Shallow Turbulent Flows by Video Imaging Method

Shallow turbulent flows were produced in a tank of small thickness to study the friction effects on large-scale turbulent motion of small depth. The tank was constructed of two parallel walls. The space between the parallel walls (4.4, 1.57, and 0.59 cm) was small compared with the height (107 cm) and the width (212 cm) of the tank, and was varied during the experiments for different friction effects. Turbulent flows were produced by the injection of water in the form of starting jets into the tank filled with water. The large-scale turbulent flow in the small space between the walls of the tank is confined to essentially two-dimensional motion, and the motion is retarded by the force of friction. Dye was injected with the source fluid as the tracer for the highly unsteady and quasitwo-dimensional turbulent motion. From the initiation of the turbulent motion at the source to the final interaction of the jets with the tank bottom, the entire sequence of events was recorded by a pair of video cameras. The depth-averaged concentration of the dye was analyzed using the recorded video images.

Preparation of micrometer‐sized,monodisperse, magnetic polymer particles

Micrometer‐sized, monodisperse, magnetic composite particles were prepared by heating micrometer‐sized, monodisperse, hollow polystyrene/polydivinylbenzene composite polymer particles at 200°C for 4 h (particles had been dipped in pentacarbonyliron) and then washed in 12 N HCl and water. The hollow polymer particles were produced by seeded polymerization by the dynamic swelling method that was proposed by authors. The magnetic composite particles contained Fe₃O₄, the content of which was 49% based on total weight, and were attracted easily in water by a 1650 G magnet. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Stickiness, Functionality, and Microstructure of Food Powders

Three major aspects of food powder are described and discussed. Stickiness is one issue that can cause production and product handling difficulties. Stickiness has been interpreted in a number of ways and thus measured differently. Functionality of the primary (single) particles or agglomerated powders is of practical interest to the consumers. The desired quality will have to be matched or exceeded by the powder manufacturers. Finally, microstructure provides a key linkage between the production and the functionality. Its formation has impacts on both the stickiness and functionality.
