With the increased interest in thermoset resin nanocomposites, it is important to understand the effects of the material on nanoscale characteristics. In this study, a curing reaction of an epoxy resin, which contained 0.25, 0.50, or 1.00 wt % of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), at different heating rates was monitored by differential scanning calorimetry; cure kinetics were also evaluated to establish a relationship between crosslinking (network formation) and mechanical properties. MWCNT concentrations above 0.25 wt % favored crosslinking formation and decreased the activation energy (Ea) in the curing reaction. Examination of the kinetic mechanism suggests that the MWCNT locally restricted the spatial volume and favored the formation of nodular morphology in the resin, especially for high MWCNT concentrations. The MWCNT exhibited some entanglement in the matrix, which hindered a more pronounced effect on the mechanical properties. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. In this work, NIRS is employed to provide compositions of α‐olefin copolymers, allowing for evaluation of the effects of certain key process variables on the final NIR spectral responses of obtained polymer materials. This work also introduces a new temperature programmed analytical technique, which combines NIRS measurements with partial fractionation of α‐olefin copolymers. The new proposed technique can be used for evaluation of polyolefin compositions, as presented here for poly(propene/1‐butene) copolymers. Besides, preliminary results obtained from thermal fractionation experiments indicate that this new proposed experimental technique can be employed for characterization of comonomer sequence distributions of α‐olefin copolymers. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The formulation of recycled thermoplastic elastomeric materials (TPE) based on ground tyre rubber (GTR), generated from end of life tyres, can be an alternative strategy to deal with a type of waste responsible for increasingly environmental problems over the past decades. The incompatibility of GTR with thermoplastics places several issues on the formulation of these materials, which this study tries to overcome. An encapsulation strategy of the GTR by an elastomeric phase is proposed in this work to overcome the lack of adhesion between the materials. Ternary blends, composed of a highly flowable polypropylene homopolymer, an ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) and GTR were formulated and their morphology and mechanical properties analyzed. The morphology of the blends showed interaction between the materials, revealing that the encapsulation of GTR by a rubber phase can be an adequate strategy to formulate recycled‐based TPE materials, if the dimension of the GTR particles is controlled and taken into consideration. The mechanical properties revealed the replacement effect of EPDM by GTR, and its dependence on the amount of that replacement. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Societal and industrial demands for lower environmental impact, cost effectiveness, and high‐performance goods and services are increasingly impacting the choice of technologies which are developed and deployed in consumer products. Like many other sectors, food packaging is moving to new technologies; the use of biopolymers is one of the most promising strategies toward an optimized use of traditional packaging materials (e.g., oil‐based plastics) without impairing the goal of extending shelf life. Among other food packaging materials, pullulan is attracting much attention due to its unique features. The goal of this review is to provide an overview of current and emerging applications of pullulan within the food packaging sector. In particular, the functional properties of interest for the food packaging industry will be discussed in light of the physicochemical attributes of this exopolysaccharide. This study focused on the production of furfural from agricultural and industrial biomass residues by a hydrodistillation process. Corncobs, sugarcane bagasse, and eucalypt wood were treated with sulfuric, hydrochloric, and phosphoric acids as catalysts, with different acid concentrations (1.5 to 5.2 mol.L ?1). In addition, the eucalypt liquor from the auto-hydrolysis, kraft-dissolving pulp production process was also investigated as a source of furfural, using sulfuric and hydrochloric acids as a catalyst (0.9 and 3.9 mol.L ?1) . Furfural yields of 30.2, 25.8, and 13.9% were achieved for corncob, sugarcane bagasse, and eucalypt wood, respectively, on the basis of biomass dry weight. The efficiency of conversion from pentose to furfural using eucalypt liquor from the auto-hydrolysis kraft process was 71.5% using HCl 3.9 mol.L ?1 . Due to the presence of a high amount of pentose, corncob produced the highest amount of furfural, followed by sugarcane bagasse and then eucalypt wood.  相似文献

This study reports on the fabrication of BST (Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3)‐based 3D microcomponents through an aqueous colloidal approach. The BST powder was synthesized by solid‐state reaction assisted by thermal analysis and XRD diffraction. Well crystalline cubic BST single phase was obtained upon heat‐treating the precursor powder mixture at 1200°C–1250°C. The reactivity of the BST powder toward water was evaluated by the changes in pH and concentration of leached ionic species along aging time. Hydrolysis reactions were suppressed by chemisorbing a suitable phosphate‐based protective agent and enabled an excellent dispersion ability to be achieved. Aqueous suspensions with solids loadings as high as 50 vol% that are stable against hydrolysis for several days could easily be prepared from the surface‐treated BST powder in aqueous solutions of an epoxy resin. After adding a suitable hardener, the colloidal suspensions could easily be cast into soft silicon rubber molds to obtain homogeneous and high dense green BST bodies.  相似文献

The mixture proportions of three surfactants, i.e. an alkylpolyglucoside (APG), an ethoxylated fatty alcohol, and an amine oxide (AO), were optimized by applying Response Surface Methodology in order to achieve the surfactant ratio that produces the highest wetting power. The synergistic effect of the binary samples of AO with the other surfactants was firstly verified. An improvement in this synergistic effect on wettability was found in the ternary mixture. In the experimental range analyzed, the surfactant concentration ratio that produced the highest wettability was a composition with 19.3 % APG, 30.1 % ethoxylated alcohol, and 50.6 % lauramine oxide.  相似文献

Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) is involved in processes related to the differentiation and maturation of osteoprogenitor cells into osteoblasts. Rat bone marrow (BM) cells were cultured in a collagen-gel containing 0.5% fetal bovine serum (FBS) for 10 days in the presence of rhTGF (recombinant human TGF)-β1-F2, a fusion protein engineered to include a high-affinity collagen-binding decapeptide derived from von Willebrand factor. Subsequently, cells were moderately expanded in medium with 10% FBS for 4 days and treated with a short pulse of rhBMP (recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein)-2 for 4 h. During the last 2 days, dexamethasone and β-glycerophosphate were added to potentiate osteoinduction. Concomitant with an up-regulation of cell proliferation, DNA synthesis levels were determined. Polymerase chain reaction was performed to reveal the possible stemness of these cells. Osteogenic differentiation was evaluated in terms of alkaline phosphatase activity and mineralized matrix formation as well as by mRNA expression of osteogenic marker genes. Moreover, cells were placed inside diffusion chambers and implanted subcutaneously into the backs of adult rats for 4 weeks. Histological study provided evidence of cartilage and bone-like tissue formation. This experimental procedure is capable of selecting cell populations from BM that, in the presence of rhTGF-β1-F2 and rhBMP-2, achieve skeletogenic potential in vitro and in vivo.  相似文献
