The current approach of the biological treatment of acid mine drainage by means of a passive remediation system involves the choice of an appropriate organic substrate as electron donor for sulphate reducers. Nowadays this selection is one of the critical steps in the performance of such treatment, as this depends to a great extent on the degradability of the organic substrate. Thus, a prior characterisation of the organic substrate predicting its biodegradability would be desirable before embarking on an extensive large-scale application. The aim of this study was to correlate the chemical composition (lignin content) of four different natural organic substrates (compost, sheep and poultry manures, oak leaf) and their capacity to sustain bacterial activity in an attempt to predict biodegradation from chemical characterisation. The results showed that the lower the content of lignin in the organic substrate, the higher its biodegradability and capacity for developing bacterial activity. Of the four organic materials, sheep and poultry manures and oak leaf evolved reducing conditions and sustained active sulphidogenesis, which coupled with the decrease in sulphate concentration indicated bacterial activity. Sheep manure was clearly the most successful organic material as electron donor (sulphate removal >99%), followed by poultry manure and oak leaf (sulphate removal of 80%). Compost appeared to be too poor in carbon to promote sulphate-reducing bacteria activity by itself. Column experiments emphasised the importance of considering the residence time as a key factor in the performance of continuous systems. With a residence time of 0.73 days, sheep manure did not promote sulphidogenesis. However, extending residence time to 2.4 and 9.0 days resulted in an increase in the sulphate removal to 18% and 27%, respectively. 相似文献

The aim of the present study was to investigate the environmental dispersal of Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia duodenalis in two distinct areas (coastal and inland) in Galicia (NW Spain). Faecal samples were collected from healthy asymptomatic domestic (cows and sheep) and wild animals (deer and wild boars) in the selected areas. In each of the selected areas, samples of untreated water (influent) and of treated water (final effluent) were collected from each of the 12 drinking water treatments plants (DWTPs) and 12 wastewater treatment plants (WTPs) under study. Analysis of a single sample from each of the 635 (coastal) and 851 (inland) domestic and wild animals selected at random revealed that the prevalences of cryptosporidiosis and giardiosis in coastal area were 9.2% and 15.9% respectively, and in inland area, 13.7% and 26.7% respectively. In the coastal area, Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts were detected in influent and effluent samples from 2/12 (16.6%) DWTPs and 8/12 (66.6%) WTPs, while G. duodenalis cysts were detected in influent and effluent samples from 3/12 (25.0%) DWTPs and 12/12 (100%) WTPs. The concentrations were notably higher in WTPs; the mean parasite concentrations in the final treated effluent were 10 oocysts per litre and 137.8 cysts per litre for Cryptosporidium and Giardia, respectively. The mean concentration of G. duodenalis cysts per litre was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than the mean concentration of Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts per litre in both the influent and the effluent samples from all the treatment plants. In the coastal area, C. parvum, C. hominis and G. duodenalis assemblages A (I and II) and E were most repeatedly detected. Purpose
To determine if the discontinuation of commercially-available simultaneous vision Multifocal Soft Contact Lenses is independent from the multifocal design. To determine causes for discontinuation and psychosocial factors involved.Methods
Multicentre single-blinded randomised controlled trial with external blinded evaluation for a three months follow-up period for three intervention groups. 150 single-vision soft wearers were randomly assigned a spherical near centred lens (S-CN), distance centred lens (CD) or aspherical near centred lens (A-CN). Cases of discontinuation, anxiety and quality of life were measured at one week and one month.Results
120 females and 30 males were included with an age range of 40–62 (48.79?±?5.23). At one month, the S-CN design had a statistically significant higher risk of discontinuation than the other two OR: 6.12 (95%CI 2.5–14.9). Twenty-eight subjects discontinued wearing S-CN at first week (56%), while discontinuation of CD and A-CD were 15 (30%) and 11 (22%), with a statistically significant difference between S-CN design and the other two (p?=?0.001). There were not statistically significant differences when direct comparison between discontinuation of CD and A-CN was made (p?=?0.36). Thirty-two percent discontinued the use because of poor distance vision and 28% because of both poor distance and near vision. Psychosocial factors were not statistically significant.Conclusions
Discontinuation of Multifocal Soft Contact Lenses is dependent on the design. Most common cause for discontinuation is poor distance vision. Psychosocial factors do not impact on discontinuation rates. 相似文献94.
Planning approaches that integrate road infrastructure and other land uses are being increasingly applied. Dealing with functional interrelatedness and stakeholder fragmentation are the main reasons for this. This article conceptualizes and analyses why and how such integrated approaches can be applied effectively throughout consecutive stages of infrastructure planning. The two case studies illustrate that the concept of integration is applied for strategic as well as operational reasons, and they reveal that these reasons may alternate throughout the planning process. Effective integration is therefore dynamic: it appropriately focuses on strengthening the socio-economic perspectives of a region for the longer term, as well as on the relations between different land uses that are physically adjacent and competing for space within a smaller area. Due to fragmented institutional contexts, successfully dealing with interrelatedness requires an intense level of interaction amongst involved actors. Such “co-production” of visions and plans has two important characteristics: negotiation, and learning about each other’s goals. Ultimately the case studies also show that planning at the infrastructure–land use interface needs institutional mechanisms to guide the alterations between strategically and operationally inspired integration. Contracts with private parties, public participation, and positive conditions for learning about each other’s referential frames are examples of the institutional mechanisms encountered in this study. 相似文献

The presence of introduced or non‐native bacteria in river water can create a selective pressure due to their ability to overcome fluctuations in physicochemical conditions and carbon source availability. The carbon source concentrations (monosaccharides and polysaccharides), physicochemical parameters (turbidity, total dissolved solids, biochemical oxygen demand, temperature and pH) and metabolic activity of Salmonella Oranienburg and Saintpaul were determined in water from the central Sinaloa state rivers. This study's results revealed that the carbohydrate availability and physicochemical conditions of river water make it a suitable niche for the establishment of Salmonella serotypes. Metabolic profiles showed that Salmonella Typhimurium could consume a wide variety of carbon sources but only at moderate levels; in contrast, Salmonella Oranienburg and Salmonella Saintpaul demonstrated intense carbon source utilization of a limited diversity of carbon sources. Carbohydrates, amino acids and carboxylic acids were the metabolites most utilized by the environmental Salmonella strains, demonstrating their superior ability to adapt to and survive in river water. 相似文献

Africa’s increasing levels of urbanisation have significant implications for urban land. Growing populations imply that there is increasing pressure on cities to provide economic opportunities, housing, infrastructure and social services to existing and incoming urban dwellers. These activities take place on urban land, and much of the new growth occurs outside of the state regulatory and legal frameworks. Using survey data collected in Maputo’s peri-urban areas of Luis Cabral and Hulene B, this paper explores how ordinary urban dwellers access, hold, transact and manage land. These findings suggest that a land market that is technically outside of the legal system exists. Notwithstanding its illegality, these land practices are organised, comprising sophisticated local land management and regulatory systems. The low incidence of land conflicts in both neighbourhoods shows that these governance practices are relatively functional. Local practices are characterised by a complex web of social roleplayers, including family members, neighbours, local leadership structures and state officials all of whom lend credibility and legitimacy to the existence of a local land market. These findings challenge conventional understanding of formal and informal markets. It is argued that these socially embedded land markets indicate how urban territory is segmented and managed, and their existence also transforms the way we conceptualise formality and informality in African cities. This situation shows how informal urban economies are co-produced by state and non-state regulatory systems. These hybrid economies have implications for how we understand governance, markets and the role of the state in our cities. 相似文献

This paper analyses the characteristics of SMEs in less‐developed areas in comparison with more advanced economies. The conceptual framework includes different factors making up the so‐called ‘entrepreneurial quality’ of the SME sector: the personal characteristics of the entrepreneurs (motivations and previous experience), different dimensions of the SMEs’ entrepreneurial orientation, and the patterns of the SMEs’ insertion in national and global value chains. The empirical analysis uses data of SMEs in four different Spanish provinces representing examples of low income economies and comparatively high income ones, respectively. Industries need to adopt the environmental management concepts in the traditional supply chain management. The green supply chain management (GSCM) is an established concept to ensure environment-friendly activities in industry. This paper identifies the relationship of driving and dependence that exists between GSCM practices with regard to their adoption within Brazilian electrical/electronic industry with the help of interpretive structural modelling (ISM). From the results, we infer that cooperation with customers for eco-design practice is driving other practices, and this practice acts as a vital role among other practices. Most studies on chelate-induced phytoextraction have focused on EDTA-mediated Pb phytoextraction. But EDTA and the formed EDTA-Pb complexes have low biodegradability and high solubility in soil, resulting in an elevated risk of adverse environmental effects. EDDS is an easily biodegradable chelating agent that has recently been proposed as an environmentally sound alternative to EDTA. Consequently, a greenhouse experiment, using a completely randomized factorial design with four replications, was carried out to compare the potential of EDTA and EDDS for chelate-induced Pb phytoextraction with Cynara cardunculus, as well as to investigate the toxicity of these two chelates to both cardoon plants and soil microorganisms. The effects of chelate addition on soil microbial communities were studied through the determination of a variety of biological indicators of soil quality such as soil enzyme activities, basal and substrate-induced respiration, potentially mineralizable nitrogen, and community level physiological profiles. EDTA was much more efficient than EDDS for the enhancement of root Pb uptake and root-to-shoot Pb translocation. In a soil polluted with 5000 mg Pb kg(-1), as a result of the addition of 1 g EDTA kg(-1) soil, a value of 1332 mg Pb kg(-1) DW shoot was obtained. EDDS application resulted in a shoot Pb accumulation of only 310 mg kg(-1)DW. Plants treated with EDDS showed lower values of biomass than those treated with EDTA. EDDS proved to be rapidly degraded, and less toxic to the soil microbial community in control non-polluted soils. Pb-polluted EDDS-treated soils showed significantly higher values of basal and substrate-induced respiration than those treated with EDTA. Although EDDS had a lower capacity to enhance Pb phytoextraction than EDTA, it has the advantage of rapid biodegradation. 相似文献
