Dairy producers use soyhulls, a byproduct of soybean processing, to replace either grain or forage in diets of lactating dairy cows. In view of the nutritional and economical value of soyhulls it is anticipated that this practice will continue to increase in popularity among nutritionists and producers of ruminant animals. This paper reviews information regarding the nutritional value of soyhulls and the effects of feeding this alternative feed on ruminal fermentation, nutrient digestion and utilization, and performance of dairy cows. Soyhulls can replace corn grain to supply about 30% of the dry matter (DM) in high-grain diets without negatively affecting either the fermentation or digestion of nutrients in the gastrointestinal tract or the performance of dairy cows. Additionally, data suggest that soyhulls might successfully replace forage to supply < or = 25% of the DM in diets of dairy cows when the supply of effective fiber, which includes a chemical and a physical component, remains adequate after including the hulls. However, caution should be exercised when data from different studies are extrapolated to practical situations because the response to feeding soyhulls appears to be largely affected by the type of carbohydrate being replaced by soyhulls; the amount, type, and physical form of the dietary forage; and the incidence of either negative or positive associative effects before and after the addition of soyhulls to the original diet. Unfortunately, the paucity of data from experiments in which soyhulls constituted more than 25 to 30% of the dietary DM restricts the ability to identify the maximum amount of soyhulls that can be used in diets of dairy cows. Information from studies in which > or = 25 to 30% of dietary DM supplied as either cereal grains or forages are replaced with soyhulls is needed to better understand and predict the production of dairy cows fed diets containing the hulls. This knowledge is essential for maximizing the use of soyhulls in diets for dairy cows.  相似文献

To investigate the correlation between lactation and thyroid hormone metabolism, the authors studied concentrations of total and free thyroxine (T4 and fT4), triiodothyronine (T3 and fT3), and reverse triiodothyronine (rT3) in plasma and milk, as well as liver and mammary gland 5'-deiodinase (5'D) activity in dry, early, middle, and late lactating dairy cows. Cows in early lactation show lower plasma levels of T4 and rT3 than dry, middle, and late lactating animals, whereas T3 shows the lowest plasma levels in the dry period; free T4 and T3 show a similar pattern. In early lactation there is a clear decrease in liver 5'D associated with a notable increase in mammary 5'D. Concentrations of T4 and T3 in milk drop significantly in the first few days after delivery, whereas rT3 increases up to the fourth month. The findings suggest a relationship between the hypothyroid status of lactating cows and the rearrangement of organ-specific 5'-deiodinase activity related to the maintenance of the udder's function.  相似文献

Four multiparous cows with cannulas in the rumen and proximal duodenum were used in early lactation in a 4 x 4 Latin square experiment to investigate the effect of method of application of a fibrolytic enzyme product on digestive processes and milk production. The cows were given ad libitum a total mixed ration (TMR) composed of 57% (dry matter basis) forage (3:1 corn silage:grass silage) and 43% concentrates. The TMR contained (g/kg dry matter): 274 neutral detergent fiber, 295 starch, 180 crude protein. Treatments were TMR alone or TMR with the enzyme product added (2 kg/1000 kg TMR dry matter) either sprayed on the TMR 1 h before the morning feed (TMR-E), sprayed only on the concentrate the day before feeding (Concs-E), or infused into the rumen for 14 h/d (Rumen-E). There was no significant effect on either feed intake or milk yield but both were highest on TMR-E. Rumen digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, and starch was unaffected by the enzyme. Digestibility of NDF was lowest on TMR-E in the rumen but highest postruminally. Total tract digestibility was highest on TMR-E for dry matter, organic matter, and starch but treatment differences were nonsignificant for neutral detergent fiber. Corn silage stover retention time in the rumen was reduced by all enzyme treatments but postruminal transit time was increased so the decline in total tract retention time with enzymes was not significant. It is suggested that the tendency for enzymes to reduce particle retention time in the rumen may, by reducing the time available for fibrolysis to occur, at least partly explain the variability in the reported responses to enzyme treatment.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine whether longer-term deficiencies in the supply of limiting amino acids would be accompanied by a decline in mammary function (total DNA, cell proliferation rate and activities of key enzymes), and whether this would adversely affect the cow's ability to respond to a return to a nutritionally adequate diet. The first experiment was performed in early/mid lactation, and the second, using the same cows, was carried out in mid/late lactation. A control group of six cows were given a grass silage-cereal diet containing fish meal as the sole protein supplement (amino acid adequate) throughout the experiments, whereas another group of six cows in treatment received the control diet for 2 wk (lactation wk 5 and 6) and then were changed to a diet in which the fish meal was replaced by an equivalent amount of protein as feather meal (amino acid deficient) for 6 wk before returning to the fish meal diet for 4 wk (Experiment 1). After a rest period of 5 wk, the experimental procedure was repeated (Experiment 2). Although there was a fall in milk yield as lactation advanced, leading to lower milk yields in Experiment 2, the marked difference in milk yield between treatments was similar for the two stages of lactation (21% vs 16% in Experiment 1 and 2, respectively). In both experiments, the marked fall of milk yield in cows given the feather meal diet was completely recovered by a return to the fish meal diet. Despite the markedly lower milk yield with the amino acid-deficient diet, however, there was no clear evidence of corresponding changes in measurements of mammary function.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare the DVE/OEB system (DVE = truly absorbed protein in the small intestine; OEB = degraded protein balance) and the NRC-2001 model in the prediction of supply of protein to dairy cows from selected forages: alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. cv. Pioneer and Beaver) and timothy (Phleum pratense L. cv. Climax and Joliette). Comparisons were made in terms of 1) ruminally synthesized microbial CP, 2) truly absorbed protein in the small intestine, and 3) degraded protein balance. In addition, the effects of variety and cutting stage of the selected forages on the potential nutrient supply to dairy cows were also studied. The results showed that the predicted values from the DVE/OEB system and the NRC-2001 model had significant correlations with high R (>0.96) values. However, using the DVE/OEB system, the overall average microbial protein supply based on available energy was 12% higher, and the truly absorbed protein in the small intestine was 15% lower than that predicted by the NRC-2001 model. The difference was also found in the prediction of the degraded protein balances, which was 11% higher based on data from the NRC-2001 model. These differences are due to considerably different factors used in calculations in the two models, although both are based on similar principles. This indicates that a further refinement is needed for a modern protein evaluation and prediction system. In addition, this study showed that the two alfalfa varieties studied (Pioneer vs. Beaver) had no effect, but cutting stage had a profound influence on ruminally synthesized microbial CP (93, 96, 86 g/kg DM at stage of early bud, late bud, and early bloom, respectively) and truly absorbed intestinal protein predicted by the DVE/OEB system (80, 79, 67 g/kg DM at stage of early bud, late bud, and early bloom, respectively). With timothy, both variety (Climax vs. Joliette) and cutting stage had significant impacts on the potential protein supply predicted by both models. The potential protein supply (DVE or MP) to the dairy cow from Climax timothy was higher than that from Joliette timothy (DVE: 46 vs. 32 g/kg DM; MP: 61 vs. 38 g/kg DM). With increasing stage of cutting, the potential protein supply (DVE or MP) was reduced (DVE: 53, 39, 25 g/kg DM; MP: 62, 51, 36 g/kg DM at stage of joint, prebloom head, and full head, respectively).  相似文献

Fatty liver is a major metabolic disease of dairy cows in early lactation that can be treated with 14-d continuous, intravenous infusions of 10 mg/d of glucagon. The objective was to test whether similar effects can be obtained with 14-d subcutaneous 7.5- or 15-mg daily dosages of glucagon beginning at d 8 postpartum. Multiparous Holstein cows (n = 32) were grouped on the basis of their liver triacylglycerol concentration at d 8 postpartum into "normal" (n = 8; triacylglycerol < 1% liver wet wt) and "susceptible" (n = 24; triacylglycerol > 1% liver wet wt) cows. Susceptible cows were assigned randomly to three groups and beginning at d 8 postpartum received 0, 2.5, or 5 mg of glucagon in 60 ml of saline by subcutaneous injections every 8 h for 14 d. Beginning at d 8 postpartum, normal cows received 60 ml of saline by subcutaneous injections every 8 h for 14 d. Both dosages of glucagon increased concentrations of plasma glucose and insulin and decreased concentrations of plasma nonesterfied fatty acids. Glucagon injections of 15 mg/d decreased concentrations of liver triacylglycerol in cows older than 3.5 yr, but not in younger multiparous cows. Our results document that subcutaneous injections of glucagon have the potential to decrease the degree of fatty liver in older dairy cows in early lactation.  相似文献

Steady-state levels of mRNA are often used to infer treatment effects on the levels of the corresponding protein. In addition, an internal standard RNA is usually measured to document specificity of treatment and to correct for intersample variation. Our objective was to evaluate whether glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) and cyclophilin could be used as internal standards when studying changes in hepatic gene expression in dairy cows. Hepatic expression of GAPDH and cyclophilin was measured in 6 cows in late pregnancy (28 d prepartum) and early lactation (10 d postpartum). Each gene displayed 2- to 3-fold higher expression in early lactation than in late pregnancy. Next, we determined whether negative energy balance alone or in combination with exogenous growth hormone could mimic the effects of early lactation. Late-lactating cows were fed 120% of predicted energy requirements or 33% of maintenance requirements. During each feeding period, cows were administered excipient or bovine somatotropin in a single-reversal design with 4-d periods separated by a 2-d interval. Underfeeding increased hepatic expression of GAPDH and cyclophilin by 1- to 2-fold, whereas bovine somatotropin had no effect. Finally, the effects of insulin were studied by performing hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamps in late pregnancy (28 d prepartum) and early lactation (28 d postpartum). Hyperinsulinemia reduced GAPDH expression in both states, and cyclophilin expression in early lactation. In conclusion, GAPDH and cyclophilin are regulated in the liver of dairy cows and should not be used to standardize hepatic gene expression in studies involving the transition period, undernutrition, and sustained changes in plasma insulin.  相似文献

Total economic effects of decreased estrus detection efficiency (EDE) are a function of the economic loss per day and the length of the decrease. A stochastic dynamic dairy herd simulation model was used to determine whether estimates from permanently different EDE rates in herds of 100 and 1000 cows could approximate net returns due to temporary decreases in EDE. The default EDE was 65% and was either permanently or temporarily decreased to 55, 45, or 35%. Temporary decreases in EDE were assumed to continue until identified using cumulative sum or Shewhart control charts. Marginal changes in net return were greater at lower permanent rates of EDE, with losses ranging from 0.73 to 1.24 dollars per extra day open. Temporary decreases in EDE typically yielded smaller effects on net return than permanent decreases, but estimates were not consistently significantly different. However, temporary (30 to 960 d) decreases in EDE affected projected herd economic performance for several years after EDE was reset to 65%. Total losses in net return due to temporary decreases in EDE ranged from 4.44 dollars (accepting more false alarms) to 12.53 dollars (fewer false alarms) per cow for the 100-cow herd. For the 1000-cow herd, total losses in net return ranged from 0.95 to 10.43 dollars per cow. Total losses were not dependent on magnitude of decreased EDE because lower EDE could be detected earlier, thereby compensating for higher daily losses; for example, 35% EDE resulted in lower total losses than 55% EDE. Decreases to 55% EDE were detected sooner by cumulative sum charts, whereas decreases to 35% EDE were detected earlier by Shewhart charts. Both control charts used together can identify unexpected decreases in EDE more efficiently, thereby minimizing potential economic losses.  相似文献

The effects of a monensin premix on milk fatty acid content during grain-induced subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) in Holstein cows receiving a total mixed ration was investigated. Six multiparous, rumen-fistulated Holstein cows were used in a two-treatment, two-period crossover design with 6-wk periods. Experimental treatments were either a monensin premix or a placebo premix. At the beginning of wk 4, SARA was induced in experimental cows for a 10-d period using a grain challenge model. The administration of a monensin premix elevated milk fat proportion of total short-chain saturated fatty acids (sum of C4 to C15). Milk fat proportions of conjugated linoleic acid isomers were unaffected. Linolenic acid (C18:3n3) proportion in milk fat of monensin-treated cows were lower when compared with placebo-treated cows during the SARA period. Results from this study indicate that dietary supplementation with monensin during SARA had little effect on milk fatty acid content.  相似文献

The efficacy of the Ovsynch program in improving conception and pregnancy rates was compared with untreated controls and other synchrony programs in lactating dairy cows. This meta-analysis examined 71 treatment and control comparisons extracted from 53 research papers. Programs evaluated included Ovsynch, natural breeding, single, double, or triple prostaglandin injections, Select Synch, Heat Synch, and modified Ovsynch.Pregnancy rates for Ovsynch programs did not differ significantly from those with natural breeding programs [predicted Bayesian relative risk (RR) = 1.04, 95% Bayesian credible interval = 0.36 to 3.23]. Results of Ovsynch vs. PGF programs showed that the risk of conception (predicted Bayesian RR = 0.89, 95% Bayesian credible interval = 0.31 to 2.64), and pregnancy rates predicted Bayesian RR = 1.11, 95% Bayesian credible interval = 0.61 to 2.13) did not differ significantly between the Ovsynch group and cows in the PGF group. Comparisons between Ovsynch and Select Synch demonstrated that the risk of conception (predicted Bayesian RR = 0.94, 95% Bayesian credible interval = 0.52 to 1.59), and pregnancy rates (predicted Bayesian RR = 1.08, 95% Bayesian credible interval = 0.38 to 3.09) did not differ significantly between the 2 groups. Examination of Ovsynch vs. modified Ovsynch programs showed that the risk of pregnancy in cows synchronized with modified Ovsynch was similar to those treated with Ovsynch (predicted Bayesian RR = 0.89, 95% Bayesian credible interval = 0.71 to 1.12).Meta-analyses identified that the conception and pregnancy rates obtained with the prostaglandin, Select Synch, and modified Ovsynch (including presynch and CoSynch) programs were comparable with the Ovsynch program. Modifications to the Ovsynch program such as presynchronization and timed artificial insemination at the time of second GnRH injection (CoSynch) may be an alternative for reproductive management of dairy herds where detection of estrus is less than optimal. The findings of this study demonstrate that the Ovsynch program could benefit dairy operations because it allows for timed artificial insemination of lactating cows without detection of estrus. There was, however, little or no significant improvement in pregnancy rates using Ovsynch over other programs and the costs of labor and hormone administration should be considered when selecting this form of reproductive technology for routine use.  相似文献
