Suffusion erosion, characterized as the selective detachment and transportation of finer particles by seepage flow, is hazardous to the stability and serviceability of geotechnical structures. The removal of finer particles deteriorates the structure and fabric of the soil, leading to the degradation of its mechanical properties. Studies into the effects of suffusion on mechanical behavior have so far produced disparate results depending on the pre-erosion relative density of the specimens tested. To investigate this issue, small cyclic and monotonic loading tests were performed on intact and eroded gap-graded silty sand specimens in three dispersed density states, using a triaxial cell modified for the purpose of erosion. The variation of Young's modulus showed an inverse relationship with the pre-erosion density of the specimen, as the small strain stiffness decreased in the dense cases and increased in the loose cases. Conversely, Poisson's ratio increased in value as suffusion progressed regardless of the initial density of the specimens. In the contractive phase of monotonic loading, the densification of the coarse soil skeleton by the downward seepage flow resulted in a decrease in contractiveness and an increase in secant stiffness. In the dilative phase, the increase in porosity by the erosion of finer particles reduced the dilatancy and peak strength of the specimens. The results suggest that the pre-suffusion density determines the primary locus of affected mechanical behavior in triaxial compression, which shifts from the contractive phase to the dilative phase with the increase in pre-suffusion density. The critical state strength, inferred using stress–dilatancy theory, was largely unaffected by the erosion of finer particles. As the results indicate, pre-erosion density may be of practical significance in assessing the vulnerability to deterioration and collapse of geotechnical formations and structures subjected to suffusion erosion. 相似文献

Histograms are convenient non-parametric density estimators, which continue to be used ubiquitously. Summary quantities estimated from histogram-based probability density models depend on the choice of the number of bins. We introduce a straightforward data-based method of determining the optimal number of bins in a uniform bin-width histogram. By assigning a multinomial likelihood and a non-informative prior, we derive the posterior probability for the number of bins in a piecewise-constant density model given the data. In addition, we estimate the mean and standard deviations of the resulting bin heights, examine the effects of small sample sizes and digitized data, and demonstrate the application to multi-dimensional histograms. 相似文献

In this paper, the remaining creep life of SA-304L stainless steel at elevated temperatures is studied. The small punch creep tests (SPCT) were performed on SA-304L virgin and aged materials at constant loads. Times to fracture and the minimum deflection rate in SPCTs were recorded, and the time-temperature parametric analysis was performed, based on experimental results. The constants of the Larson–Miller parameter and the Monkman–Grant relationship were obtained for different consumed creep life ratios, and eventually the equations were established to explain the variation of constants of the Larson–Miller parameter and the Monkman-Grant relationship with respect to the consumed creep life ratio. 相似文献

Biotechnological hydrogen production is considered as an environmentally sustainable alternative to petrochemical sources or electrolysis. Here, disruption of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and metabolic regulation via the small RNA RyhB were adopted to improve hydrogen production in the novel Klebsiella sp. strain FSoil 024. The hydrogen production of FSoil 024-L (Δldh) and FSoil 024-L/R (Δldh/RyhB) from glucose in a 5-L fermenter respectively increased by 40 and 50% compared to the wild type. When glycerol was adopted as a more favorable substrate, FSoil 024-L generated 3.3 L/L of hydrogen after 52 h of fermentation, implying its great potential for the utilization of crude glycerol to produce hydrogen. Overexpression of RyhB downregulated formate biosynthesis in FSoil 024, thereby redirecting NADH toward the hydrogen production pathway. This finding provides new insights into the role of cellular reducing power in hydrogen metabolism and establishes a rationale for improving hydrogen production. 相似文献

1-read/1-write (1R1W) register file (RF) is a popular memory configuration in modern feature rich SoCs requiring significant amount of embedded memory. A memory compiler is constructed using the 8T RF bitcell spanning a range of instances from 32 b to 72 Kb. An 8T low-leakage bitcell of 0.106 μm2 is used in a 14 nm FinFET technology with a 70 nm contacted gate pitch for high-density (HD) two-port (TP) RF memory compiler which achieves 5.66 Mb/mm2 array density for a 72 Kb array which is the highest reported density in 14 nm FinFET technology. The density improvement is achieved by using techniques such as leaf-cell optimization (eliminating transistors), better architectural planning, top level connectivity through leaf-cell abutment and minimizing the number of unique leaf-cells. These techniques are fully compatible with memory compiler usage over the required span. Leakage power is minimized by using power-switches without degrading the density mentioned above. Self-induced supply voltage collapse technique is applied for write and a four stack static keeper is used for read Vmin improvement. Fabricated test chips using 14 nm process have demonstrated 2.33 GHz performance at 1.1 V/25 °C operation. Overall Vmin of 550 mV is achieved with this design at 25 °C. The inbuilt power-switch improves leakage power by 12x in simulation. Approximately 8% die area of a leading 14 nm SoC in commercialization is occupied by these compiled RF instances. 相似文献

Recurrently the question arises if efforts in food safety management system (FSMS) have resulted in effective systems in animal-based food production systems. The aim of this study was to gain an insight in the performance of FSMS in European animal-based food production companies in view of their typical context characteristics. Hundred European companies (from Belgium, Spain, The Netherlands, Greece, Italy, and Hungary) varying in company size, and producing different types of fresh and processed animal-derived products (dairy, beef/lamb, poultry, and pork) were assed using a diagnostic instrument. Results indicated that most participating companies adapted adequately their food safety management systems to the riskiness of their context characteristics resulting in rather good safety output scores. Only a small group have overall basic systems and operate in a moderate or moderate-high risk context, which was reflected in lower safety output scores. Companies tend to invest first in the control strategies whereas assurance activities such as verification and validation seem to require more time and effort to achieve advanced levels. Our study demonstrated that also small and medium enterprises managed to have advanced systems, and achieve a good safety output. However, their typical organisational characteristics such as less resources (educated staff, laboratory facilities, time), more restricted formalisation (restricted use of procedures and formal meetings), limited information systems, but more stable workforce, might require more tailored support from government and/or branch organisations to develop towards advanced systems in the case of high-risk products and processes. More in-depth studies to successful SMEs could give insight in best practices to improve FSMS performance. 相似文献

The influence of a series of alkyl alcohols on the work function of PEDOT:PSS thin films is systematically investigated by Kelvin probe measurements. We show that the PEDOT:PSS work function can be increased stepwise from 5.2 eV for pristine PEDOT:PSS to 5.61 eV using either alcohols with different alkyl chain length or varying the amount of alcohol in mixtures with chlorobenzene. Moreover, we demonstrate the effect of work function modification on merocyanine based bulk heterojunction solar cells, resulting in improved values for the open-circuit voltage comparable to those obtained with high work function MoO3. Thus, the processing method presented herein can potentially serve as a simple, alternative route to adjustable and high work function electrodes while maintaining processability from solution. 相似文献

Dynamic behavior of DC–DC converters plays a crucial role in stability of renewable energy exploitation systems. This paper presents small signal modeling of an input/output magnetically coupled interleaved buck–boost converter for fuel-cell applications to help the designers with the better understanding of converter dynamics. Aiming to have a continuous converter transfer function for a smooth transition between the operation modes and an improved inner dynamics, a damping network and an input/output coupling have been added to the interleaved structure of well-known cascaded buck–boost converter. Having the same step-up/step-down voltage transfer ratio, smooth transition and improved inner dynamics make this converter quite suitable for renewable energy applications. The paper presents a small signal ac equivalent circuit model of the proposed converter based on state space averaging (SSA) method. Simulation results show remarkable improvements in converter dynamic behavior in both time and frequency domains. Prototype setup of 360 W and 36 V output voltage for a fuel cell with a brand of “FCgen 1020ACS” Ballard Power Systems, Inc. was implemented.
