Metal/ceramic composites are in high demand in several industries because of their superior thermo-mechanical properties. Among various composite types, the interpenetrating phase composites (IPCs) with percolating metallic and ceramic phases offer manifold benefits, such as a good combination of strength, toughness, and stiffness, very good thermal properties, excellent wear resistance, as well as the flexibility of microstructure and processing route selection, etc. The fabrication of metal/ceramic IPCs typically involves two steps - i) processing of an open porous ceramic body, and ii) infiltration of metallic melt in the pores to fabricate the IPC. Although significant progress has been made in recent years for developing both porous ceramics and melt infiltration methods, to the best of the knowledge of the authors, no review article summarizing all the aspects of processing and properties of IPCs has been published till date. This review article is aimed at filling this gap. Starting with a brief introduction about the current status and applications of IPCs, the various processing routes for fabricating open porous ceramic preforms and melt infiltration techniques have been discussed. Subsequently, the data available for various important physical, mechanical, and thermal properties for IPCs have been critically analyzed to thoroughly understand their dependence on various structural and processing parameters. To compare the properties of IPCs with other relevant materials, seven different Ashby material property maps have been used, and the domains for IPCs have been created in them. For each map, the concept of material indices has been employed to critically discuss how IPCs perform in relation to other material classes for various optimum design conditions. Finally, a detailed future outlook for further research on IPCs has been provided.  相似文献

Abrasive wear is a complex surface degradation process driven by various factors such as microstructure, the mechanical properties of the target material, the abrasive, loading conditions, and the surrounding environment. In this study, in situ TiC reinforced Zinc Aluminum alloy composites were prepared through a liquid metallurgy route and the synergistic effect of applied load, sliding speed, abrasive grit size and TiC content on the high-stress abrasive wear response were investigated. The test materials' wear response was established by characterising wear surfaces, sub-surfaces, debris particles, and an abrasive medium. The study suggests that the wear resistance of the specimens decreases with an increase in the applied load, and the composite reinforced with 10 wt % of TiC shows superior wear behaviour among all the test materials. The study also points out that the ZA-27 alloy reinforced with in situ TiC can be a suitable replacement of the conventionally used materials for automotive applications.  相似文献

Full aperture continuous polishing using pitch lap is a key process of finishing large flat optical workpiece. The friction force of the workpiece and pitch lap interface significantly affects material removal. In this work, the friction force was determined by a measurement system that uses force transducers to support the workpiece. Experimental and theoretical analyses have been carried out to investigate the evolution of friction force with polishing time and its effect on material removal. Our results show that the friction coefficient of the workpiece/lap interface decreases during polishing, which is due to surface smoothing of the viscoelastic pitch lap by loading conditioner. In addition, the spatial average and uniformity of material removal rate (removal coefficient) increases with the increase of friction coefficient, which is due to rough lap surface, provides more sharp asperities to charge the polishing particles.  相似文献

The possibility of additive manufacturing of ceramics has been reported widely in scientific literature. This study investigates the potential of direct inkjet printing or material jetting of 3Y-TZP ceramics by assessing the microstructure and mechanical properties of the sintered printed parts. The technique allows to print in layers of 10.5 μm, with an as-printed green density of 58 % and nearly fully sintered density of 6.03 ± 0.1 g/cm3 (99.7 % TD). The dimensions of the green and sintered parts were highly accurate but showed an anisotropic roughness in function of the building direction, mainly due to the support structures. The biaxial bending and 4-point bending strength of the sintered material was found to be substantially higher in the XY direction than in the building (Z) direction. SEM and X-Ray computed tomography revealed the presence of delamination cracks, agglomerates and spherical pores, which were identified as fracture origins on fractured surfaces.  相似文献

Upward flame spread experiments were conducted on long thin composite fabric fuels made of 75% cotton and 25% fiberglass of various widths between 2 and 8.8 cm and lengths greater than 1.5 m. Symmetric ignition at the bottom edge of the fuel resulted in two sided upward flame growth initially. As flame grew to a critical length (15–30 cm depending on sample width) fluctuation or instability of the flame base was observed. For samples 5 cm or less in width, this instability lead to flame blow off on one side of the sample (can be either side in repeated tests). The remaining flame on the other side would quickly shrink in length and spread all the way to the end of the sample with a constant limiting length and steady spread rate. Flame blow off from the increased buoyancy induced air velocity (at the flame base) with increasing flame length is proposed as the mechanism for this interesting phenomenon. Cemented carbide has been investigated as a useful material for the fabrication of micro devices. Focused ion beam (FIB) micro-milling has been found to be one of the most appropriate methods for the fabrication of micro devices. The experimental FIB micro-milling on cemented carbide have been conducted according to the L16 orthogonal array of Taguchi technique. Beam current, extraction voltage, angle of beam incidence, dwell time and percentage overlap between beam diameters have been considered as process variables of FIB micro-milling in experimental design. Material removal rate (MRR) and surface roughness have been determined experimentally for FIB micro-milling of cemented carbide and beam current has been identified as the most significant parameter. The minimum surface roughness of 5.6 nm has been reported on cemented carbide, which is not a usual practice to achieve on such polycrystalline material, and hence it may be considered as a significant research contribution. Maximum MRR of 0.4836 μm3/s has been reported. Moreover, genetic algorithm toolbox of MATLAB has been utilized for multi-objective optimization between MRR and surface roughness. The corresponding optimum values of MRR and surface roughness for multi-objective optimization have been represented by pareto optimum solution generated by genetic algorithm. The research work presented in this paper determines the setting of process parameters of FIB micro-milling for achieving a specific combination of MRR and surface roughness on cemented carbide.  相似文献

The demand for raw materials is growing worldwide, in step with increasing world population and rising living standards of emerging countries. It is becoming more difficult to exploit primary raw materials because of declining ore grades and increasingly complicated mineralogies. Thus, the efficient and environmentally sustainable exploitation of primary resources using innovative technologies has emerged as an important research field to address these issues. An innovative approach is introduced to optimize process and quality control by combining acoustic emission (AE) and vibration technology. The general feasibility of these two technologies for material recognition and characterization is examined. The new approach was tested to determine whether coal could be distinguished from waste rock.  相似文献

A novel dual-rotation bobbin tool friction stir welding (DBT-FSW) was developed, in which the upper shoulder (US) and lower shoulder (LS) have different rotational speeds. This process was tried to weld 3.2 mm thick aluminum-lithium alloy sheets. The metallographic analysis and torque measurement were carried out to characterize the weld formability. Experimental results show that compared to conventional bobbin tool friction stir welding, the DBT-FSW has an excellent process stability, and can produce the defect-free joints in a wider range of welding parameters. These can be attributed to the significant improvement of material flow caused by the formation of a staggered layer structure and the unbalanced force between the US and LS during the DBT-FSW process.  相似文献

A novel non-keyhole friction stir welding technique was proposed to weld the butt joint of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy with the thickness of 6 mm. A sound joint was obtained by this technique, simultaneously eliminating the flash, shoulder mark and keyhole defects. The sleeve directly affected zone (SDAZ) and the sleeve indirectly affected zone (SIAZ) were divided into the joint according to the plunging position of the hollow sleeve. The lack of root penetration defect was avoided when the plunging depth of the hollow sleeve was only 4.2 mm, because the hollow part inside the sleeve improved the material flow below the sleeve. An S-shaped line was left at the SIAZ, and the height of it had the minimum value of 1.47 mm at 20 mm/min. Whether the failure location of the joint was in SIAZ/SDAZ or the heat-affected zone (HAZ) depended on the height and bonding strength of the S-shaped line. The joint fracture location changed from the SIAZ/SDAZ at 35 mm/min to the HAZ at 20 and 30 mm/min. The maximum tensile strength of 224.3 MPa was obtained at 30 mm/min which was 73.7% of that of the base material. The fracture surface morphology exhibited the typical ductile fracture.  相似文献

Stable and compatible cathode materials are a key factor for realizing the low-temperature (LT, ≤600?°C) operation and practical implementations of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). In this study, perovskite oxides SrFe1-xTixO3-δ (x?< = 0.1), with various ratios of Ti doping, are prepared by a sol-gel method for cathode material for LT-SOFCs. The structure, morphology and thermo-gravimetric characteristics of the resultant SFT powders are investigated. It is found that the Ti is successfully doped into SrFeO3-δ to form a single phase cubic perovskite structure and crystal structure of SFT shows better stability than SrFeO3-δ. The dc electrical conductivity and electrochemical properties of SFT are measured and analysed by four-probe and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) measurements, respectively. The obtained SFT exhibits a very low polarization resistance (Rp), .01 Ωcm2 at 600?C. The SFT powders using as cathode in fuel cell devices, exhibit maximum power density of 551?mW?cm?2 with open circuit voltage (OCV) of 1.15?V at 600?C. The good performance of the SFT cathode indicates a high rate of oxygen diffusion through the material at cathode. By enabling operation at low temperatures, SFT cathodes may result in a practical implementation of SOFCs.  相似文献
