Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a promising technology for simultaneous wastewater treatment and energy harvesting. The properties of the anode material play a critical role in the performance of the MFC. In this study, graphene oxide was prepared by a modified hummer's method. A thin layer of graphene oxide was incorporated on the carbon brush using an electrophoretic technique. The deoxygenated graphene oxide formed on the surface of the carbon brush (RGO-CB) was investigated as a bio-anode in MFC operated with real wastewater. The performance of the MFC using the RGO-CB was compared with that using plain carbon brush anode (PCB). Results showed that electrophoretic deposition of graphene oxide on the surface of carbon brush significantly enhanced the performance of the MFC, where the power density increased more than 10 times (from 33 mWm?2 to 381 mWm?2). Although the COD removal was nearly similar for the two MFCs, i.e., with PCB and RGO-CB; the columbic efficiency significantly increased in the case of RGO-CB anode. The improved performance in the case of the modified electrode was related to the role of the graphene in improving the electron transfer from the microorganism to the anode surface, as confirmed from the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements.  相似文献

The three-parameter and two-parameter Weibull distributions are compared using 26 mechanical property data sets of fiber-reinforced polymeric (FRP) composite materials manufactured by the pultrusion process. Both strength and stiffness properties were examined. The probability distributions were compared on the basis of goodness of fit, nominal design values, and allowable load to achieve uniform reliability. It is recommended that the two-parameter Weibull distribution be used to characterize FRP composite material properties. The primary basis for this recommendation is small differences in nominal design values and small differences in allowable loads between the two-parameter and three-parameter Weibull distributions. Other supporting reasons for the recommendation are similar observed significance levels in distribution fitting, computational efficiency, and the fact that the location parameter of the three-parameter Weibull distribution is near the first order statistic.  相似文献

The paper presents a family of methods with postintegration, for numerical integration of non-linear dynamic equations of motion of discrete systems. Both explicit and implicit algorithms of these methods are conditionally stable, but can give solutions of accuracy of a few orders higher than the known methods with preintegration, corresponding to them. A general analysis of stability and accuracy of single-step methods is carried out. The postintegration methods have been tested on a single-degree-of-freedom non-linear system.  相似文献

A fermentation procedure using wheys from buffalo milk, sweet rennet and salted wheys containing up to 15% NaC1, and based on the selection of salt-tolerant fungal cultures for production of microbial proteins and some economically important enzymes, is described. Certain strains of Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, A. ochraceus and A. terreus gave yields of mycelium ranging between 1.5 and 30 g on a dry weight basis. Strong proteolytic activities were exhibited by A. ochraceus, A. flavus and, to a lesser extent, by A. niger in the presence of salt up to 10% as final concentration. Powerful milk-clotting activities were also detected in culture supernatants of A. flavus and A. ochraceus. Extracellular β-galactosidases were released in to the culture fluids of these fungal strains with variable activities, depending upon the salt content of the growth medium. Reliability analysis is especially important when critical decisions are to be made involving potentially severe adverse consequences such as foodborne illness. Owing to uncertainty associated with the parameters controlling survival of Listeria monocytogenes in chorizo (a Mexican‐style sausage), the time needed to reduce the count by a certain number (n) of logs (tnD) is probabilistic. In this paper the first‐order second‐moment (FOSM) method based on Taylor series expansion is used to derive the expected value and standard deviation of tnD as function of the operating conditions (random variables) affecting survival, namely initial water activity (aw0) of the sausage batter, storage temperature (T) and airflow velocity (F), along with their uncertainties characterised by their means and coefficients of variation. For any given n the derived tnD probability distribution enables one to determine an estimate of tnD for any desired level of reliability or confidence level, such as 50% (median value), 95%, 99%, etc. Among the conclusions drawn were: (i) the variability associated with T and F has a minor effect on estimating uncertainty in tnD, whereas the reliability of tnD estimation is greatly influenced by the uncertainty in aw0; and (ii) the uncertainty in aw0 has the greatest impact when aw0 of the sausage formulation exceeds 0.90. The approach used and discussed in this paper can be applied to any survival/inactivation study to incorporate the effect of uncertainty in the various extrinsic and intrinsic parameters on the survival kinetics of the pathogen in a food system under evaluation. In this paper the time-domain surface impedances of an homogeneous absorber layer, are given for the vertical and horizontal polarizations, or respectively for the electric field perpendicular or parallel to the incidence plane. It turns out that the application of the concept in finite difference time-domain (FDTD) in absorbing surface impedances boundary conditions, gives results in good agreement with analytical Fresnel reflection coefficients.  相似文献
