This paper provides a summary of recent studies concerning numerical modeling of dynamic crack-propagation, Both stationary mesh as well as moving mesh finite-element procedures are examined. Simple procedures, using a moving mesh of conventional isoparametric elements in conjunction with certain path-independent integrals for the evaluation of stress-intensity factors for a dynamically propagating crack are presented.
Résumé Le mémoire fournit des synthèses des études récentes relatives à la modélisation numérique de la propagation de fissures dynamiques. On examine, à la fois, le maillage stationaire et le maillage mobile utilisés dans les procédures d'éléments finis. On présente des procédures simples utilisant un maillage mobile d'éléments conventionnels isoparamétriques utilisé avec certaines intégrales indépendantes du parcours, en vue d'évaluer les facteurs d'intensité de contrainte dans le cas d'une fissure en cours de propagation dynamique.相似文献

Given a collection of regions on a map, we seek a method of continuously altering the regions as the scale is varied. This
is formalized and brought to rigor as well-defined problems in homotopic deformation. We ask the regions to preserve topology,
area-ratios, and relative position as they change over time. A solution is presented using differential methods and computational
geometric techniques. Most notably, an application of this method is used to provide an algorithm to obtain cartograms.

He is currently working on his Ph.D. in mathematics at Stanford University. His research interests include low dimensional topology and geometric analysis. Satyan L. Devadoss is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Williams College. His research interests lie in the interplay between topology and geometry, notably in applications to theoretical physics (moduli spaces and string theory) and computer science (cartography and polytopes). John Mugno received his undergraduate degree from Williams College and is currently continuing his studies in mathematics at the University of Maryland. His areas of interest include combinatorics and topology. Don Sheehy received his undergraduate degree in Princeton University and is currently pursuing a PhD in Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. His research focuses on computational geometry algorithms for meshing. Rachel Ward received her undergraduate degree at the University of Texas at Austin. She is now a PhD student at Princeton University in the Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics. We describe a dataset of several thousand calibrated, time-stamped, geo-referenced, high dynamic range color images, acquired under uncontrolled, variable illumination conditions in an outdoor region spanning several hundred meters. The image data is grouped into several regions which have little mutual inter-visibility. For each group, the calibration data is globally consistent on average to roughly five centimeters and 0 1°, or about four pixels of epipolar registration. All image, feature and calibration data is available for interactive inspection and downloading at http://city.lcs.mit.edu/data.Calibrated imagery is of fundamental interest in a variety of applications. We have made this data available in the belief that researchers in computer graphics, computer vision, photogrammetry and digital cartography will find it of value as a test set for their own image registration algorithms, as a calibrated image set for applications such as image-based rendering, metric 3D reconstruction, and appearance recovery, and as input for existing GIS applications. 相似文献

In the pulmonary vasculature, mechanical forces such as cyclic stretch induce changes in vascular signaling, tone and remodeling. Nitric oxide is a potent regulator of soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC), which drives cGMP production, causing vasorelaxation. Pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) express inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and while iNOS expression increases during late gestation, little is known about how cyclic stretch impacts this pathway. In this study, PASMC were subjected to cyclic stretch of 20% amplitude and frequency of 1 Hz for 24 h and compared to control cells maintained under static conditions. Cyclic stretch significantly increased cytosolic oxidative stress as compared to static cells (62.9 ± 5.9% vs. 33.3 ± 5.7% maximal oxidation), as measured by the intracellular redox sensor roGFP. Cyclic stretch also increased sGCβ protein expression (2.5 ± 0.9-fold), sGC activity (1.5 ± 0.2-fold) and cGMP levels (1.8 ± 0.2-fold), as well as iNOS mRNA and protein expression (3.0 ± 0.9 and 2.6 ± 0.7-fold, respectively) relative to control cells. An antioxidant, recombinant human superoxide dismutase (rhSOD), significantly decreased stretch-induced cytosolic oxidative stress, but did not block stretch-induced sGC activity. Inhibition of iNOS with 1400 W or an iNOS-specific siRNA inhibited stretch-induced sGC activity by 30% and 68% respectively vs. static controls. In conclusion, cyclic stretch increases sGC expression and activity in an iNOS-dependent manner in PASMC from fetal lambs. The mechanism that produces iNOS and sGC upregulation is not yet known, but we speculate these effects represent an early compensatory mechanism to counteract the effects of stretch-induced oxidative stress. A better understanding of the interplay between these two distinct pathways could provide key insights into future avenues to treat infants with pulmonary hypertension. 相似文献

A liquid impedance cell for broadband impedance measurements up to 110 MHz is presented. The design incorporates temperature control and minimizes parasitic capacitance and inductance. The cell is simple to fabricate and uses chemically resistant materials, stainless steel, and Teflon. This dielectric cell can be used in a variety of liquid measurements, particularly those related to impedance measurements of biological objects in solution. Temperature control is illustrated in measurements of the permittivity of deionized water from 5 to 55 °C. Numerical fitting procedures employed on the relaxation curves indicate good agreement with previous studies on beta-lactoglobulin and hen lysozyme. Titration capability is demonstrated through dielectric titration of hen lysozyme and beta-lactoglobulin. 相似文献

The increasing availability of (digital) cultural heritage artefacts offers great potential for increased access to art content,
but also necessitates tools to help users deal with such abundance of information. User-adaptive art recommender systems aim
to present their users with art content tailored to their interests. These systems try to adapt to the user based on feedback
from the user on which artworks he or she finds interesting. Users need to be able to depend on the system to competently
adapt to their feedback and find the artworks that are most interesting to them. This paper investigates the influence of
transparency on user trust in and acceptance of content-based recommender systems. A between-subject experiment (N = 60) evaluated interaction with three versions of a content-based art recommender in the cultural heritage domain. This
recommender system provides users with artworks that are of interest to them, based on their ratings of other artworks. Version
1 was not transparent, version 2 explained to the user why a recommendation had been made and version 3 showed a rating of
how certain the system was that a recommendation would be of interest to the user. Results show that explaining to the user
why a recommendation was made increased acceptance of the recommendations. Trust in the system itself was not improved by
transparency. Showing how certain the system was of a recommendation did not influence trust and acceptance. A number of guidelines
for design of recommender systems in the cultural heritage domain have been derived from the study’s results.

Uronic acid soluble in ethanol/water (4:1 v/v) increased from 9 ± 1 mg kg?1 fresh weight in pulp of unripe banana fruit. Musa (AAA Group, Cavendish subgroup) ‘Williams’, to 53 ± 13 mg kg?1 fresh weight in fruit ripened for 13 days. This increase began within the first 2 days of ripening. Uronic acid soluble in phenol/acetic acid/water (2:1:1 w/v/v) increased from 15 ± 5 to 86 ± 17 mg kg?1 fresh weight during the first 8 days of ripening, accompanied by a decrease in cell wall uronic acid from 10·2 ± 0·8 to 4·4 ± 0·4 g kg?1 fresh weight. Most or all of the uronic acid in extracts of ripe pulp cochromatographed with monogalacturonic acid. The results were consistent with hydrolysis of cell wall polyuronides by exopolygalacturonase (EC 3.2.1.67). 相似文献

In this letter, we demonstrate the use of an electronic feedback scheme using a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) to control the optical phase of individual semiconductor lasers (SCLs) phase locked to a common reference laser using heterodyne optical phase-locked loops (OPLLs). The outputs of two external cavity SCLs phase-locked to a common reference laser are coherently combined, and the variation in the relative optical path lengths of the combining beams is corrected by dynamically changing the phase of the offset radio-frequency signal fed into one of the OPLLs by means of a VCO. A stable power combination efficiency of 94% is achieved. This inherently different method of phase control, i.e., electronic rather than the use of electrooptic crystals, is deemed essential for new applications involving coherent optoelectronics. 相似文献

5-Fluoroanthranilic acid (FAA)-resistant mutants were selected in homothallic diploids of three Saccharomyces species, taking care to isolate mutants of independent origin. Mutations were assigned to complementation groups by interspecific complementation with S. cerevisiae tester strains. In all three species, trp3, trp4 and trp5 mutants were recovered. trp1 mutants were also recovered if the selection was imposed on a haploid strain. Thus, FAA selection may be more generally applicable than was previously described. 相似文献
