This study presents a generalization of a lumped parameters model through the use of fractional derivatives of arbitrary order. The conventional model has an analytical solution in terms of exponential function. However, when applied to kinetic data on moisture absorption in rice grains, its performance was worse when compared to the proposed generalized model. The results were analyzed for four hydration temperatures. Despite the similarity of the mass transfer coefficients for both models, the proposed generalization provided a statistically significant improvement in prediction of moisture values in relation to time and process temperature.

Practical applications

The model proposed in this paper is applicable in describing the hydration kinetics of rice which is an important step in parboiling process, for instance. The simplicity of the analytical solution of the model and the improvement of its prediction capability makes the presented approach useful to project of equipment intended to process rice.  相似文献

Several researchers have developed studies to obtain a mathematical model able to describe grain drying kinetics. However, most of these studies neglect the effect of grain initial moisture content on drying curves. In this study, we assessed the dependence of drying curves and mass transfer coefficients on this initial moisture, air temperature, and its velocity by measuring grain mass losses within time on a tray dryer. Mathematical models were adjusted and results indicated that initial grain moisture content has significant influence on drying curves and mass transfer coefficients.  相似文献

Mixing of particulate systems is an important process to achieve uniformity, in particular pharmaceutical processes that requires the same amount of active ingredient per tablet. Several mixing processes exist, this study is concerned with mechanical mixing of crystalline particles using a four-blade mixer. Although numerical investigations of mixing using four-blades have been conducted, the simplification of particle shape to spherical or rounded superquadric particle systems is universal across these studies. Consequently, we quantify the effect of particle shape, that include round shapes and sharp edged polyhedral shapes, on the mixing kinematics (Lacey Mixing Index bounded by 0 and 1) that include radial and axial mixing as well as the inter-particle force chain network in a numerical study. We consider six 100 000 particles systems that include spheres, cubes, scaled hexagonal prism, bilunabirotunda, truncated tetrahedra, and a mixed particle system. This is in addition to two six million particle systems consisting of sphere and truncated tetrahedra particles that we can simulate within a realistic time frame due to GPU computing. We found that spherical particles mixed the fastest with Lacey mixing indices of up to 0.9, while polyhedral shaped particle systems mixing indexes varied between 0.65 and 0.87, for the same mixing times. In general, to obtain a similar mixing index (of 0.7), polyhedral shaped particle systems needed to be mixed for 50% longer than a spherical particle system which is concerning given the predominant use of spherical particles in mixing studies.  相似文献

Antisense oligonucleotides appear to offer considerable promise as sequence-specific inhibitors of gene expression. Different cellular targets for oligodeoxynucleotides with oncologic interest have been identified such as oncogenes, growth factors, and cell cycle-related genes. DNA polymerase alpha (pol alpha) plays a relevant role in DNA synthesis and cell proliferation. Pol alpha gene expression is constitutive throughout the cell cycle and its mRNA content and activity are related to the growth rate and neoplastic phenotype. The effects of a 18-mer pol alpha antisense oligomer on the proliferation of the MDA-MB 231 breast cancer cell line have been investigated. After 48 h in culture with oligomers (10 microM), about 50% growth inhibition was observed in antisense-treated cells, as evaluated by 3-(4,5-dimethythiazol-2yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay and cell count. [3H]Thymidine incorporation exhibited a 90% inhibition of DNA synthesis associated to 64% accumulation of cells at the G1-S border of the cycle as by flow cytometry, at 24 h. Northern hybridization and SDS-PAGE of immunoprecipitated MDA-MB 231 cell lysates revealed a decreased expression of pol alpha mRNA and a reduction of the 180-kDa polypeptide, respectively. Collectively, the data further confirm the relevance of pol alpha in the replicative cycle, as well as strengthen the potentiality of the antisense strategy for the control of gene expression and cell growth.  相似文献
