On New Zealand dairy farms, it is the nitrogen excreted directly onto pasture, particularly urine, that drives nitrogen (N) leaching from the farm. A new framework (UPF: Urine Patch Framework) is presented that post-processes the results of a whole farm model and runs a mechanistic soil model to simulate the urine patches. Two alternative methods to simulate the spatial distribution of urine patches were implemented and compared (Grid: spatially explicit, and Probabilistic: based on the probability of different temporal urination patterns). This paper describes the implementation of these two methods in connection with a Whole Farm Model; and compares the N leaching predictions with observed data. Two examples are provided, one analyzing the impact of urine patch overlap and another, the relative risk of N leaching at different times of urinary N deposition. The model showed good correlation and predictive ability between simulated annual N leaching results and observed data [R2 = 94 %, mean relative prediction error (MRPE) = 10 % for Grid and R2 = 72 %, MRPE = 20 % for Probabilistic]. The two methods produced similar results across an 8-year period for monthly and annual N leaching (R2 = 96 %, MRPE = 10 % and R2 = 86 %, MRPE = 8 %; respectively). Only 8 % of the paddock area was covered with multiple urinations during 1 year, but as much as 39 % of the total urine volume was deposited on overlapped patches. Systematically removing all urinary N for 1 month in either May or June reduced N leaching by approximately 20 %. Avoiding urinary N deposition during autumn or early winter could be highly effective in mitigating N leached during the following winter.  相似文献

Green synthesis of nanoparticles has fuelled the use of biomaterials to synthesise a variety of metallic nanoparticles. The current study investigates the use of xylanases of Aspergillus niger L3 (NEA) and Trichoderma longibrachiatum L2 (TEA) to synthesise silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Characterisation of AgNPs was carried out using UV–Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and transmission electron microscopy, while their effectiveness as antimicrobial, antioxidant, catalytic, anticoagulant, and thrombolytic agents were determined. The colloidal AgNPs was brownish with surface plasmon resonance at 402.5 and 410 nm for NEA‐AgNPs and TEA‐AgNPs, respectively; while FTIR indicated that protein molecules were responsible for the capping and stabilisation of the nanoparticles. The spherical nanoparticles had size of 15.21–77.49 nm. The nanoparticles significantly inhibited the growth of tested bacteria (63.20–88.10%) and fungi (82.20–86.10%), and also scavenged DPPH (37.48–79.42%) and hydrogen peroxide (20.50–96.50%). In addition, the AgNPs degraded malachite green (78.97%) and methylene blue (25.30%). Furthermore, the AgNPs displayed excellent anticoagulant and thrombolytic activities using human blood. This study has demonstrated the potential of xylanases to synthesise AgNPs which is to the best of our knowledge the first record of such. This paper will demonstrate the differences found in odour test results, when odour sampling is performed at the same sources by two different consultants. By examining two case studies, this paper will highlight that the difference between the results can be significant. Both studies are based on odour sampling programs determining the odour removal efficiency of odour control units installed at two different facilities: a pet food facility and an oil/grease recycling facility. The first study is based on odour measurements at the inlet and outlet of the unit installed by Applied Plasma Physics AS at the pet food facility. Odour assessments were performed by two separate consultants at the same time. The second study is based on testing of the odour removal effectiveness of two units: a scrubber and a biofilter at an oil/grease recycling facility. During this study two odour sampling programs were performed by two consultants at different times, but under the same process conditions. This paper will show how varying results can play a role in choosing the adequate odour control technologies. The final results suggest that although, an odour control unit may appear to be insufficient, it actually is successful at removing the odours.  相似文献

Non-thermal plasma (NTP) systems can be used for abatement of odour nuisances. Odour reductions are achieved by radical-initiated oxidation and dust collection in the plasma reactor. For some emissions a sequence of NTP followed by UV-light can improve the odour reduction further. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of NTP technology combined with UV-light towards odour emissions from sludge treatment. Air from a pilot sludge dryer was treated with a pilot NTP and a UV unit. The effect of using an acid scrubber upstream the NTP system was also tested. Thermal desorption gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (TD-GC/MS) was used to analyse samples taken from the inlet and the outlet of the NTP system. The TD-GC/MS used was also equipped with a sniffing port that made it possible to record odour-active compounds eluting from the column. Relative amounts of odour-active compounds in the inlet and the outlet flow from the NTP system were compared. Bag samples from inlet and outlet were also separately analysed by an external lab and by two operators using a one-man olfactometer, a modified NasalRanger(TM). These results indicated a significant odour removal efficiency of 70-90% depending on the settings and combinations of abatement equipment.  相似文献

The DairyNZ whole-farm model (WFM; DairyNZ, Hamilton, New Zealand) consists of a framework that links component models for animal, pastures, crops, and soils. The model was developed to assist with analysis and design of pasture-based farm systems. New (this work) and revised (e.g., cow, pasture, crops) component models can be added to the WFM, keeping the model flexible and up to date. Nevertheless, the WFM does not account for plant-animal relationships determining herbage-depletion dynamics. The user has to preset the maximum allowable level of herbage depletion [i.e., postgrazing herbage mass (residuals)] throughout the year. Because residuals have a direct effect on herbage regrowth, the WFM in its current form does not dynamically simulate the effect of grazing pressure on herbage depletion and consequent effect on herbage regrowth. The management of grazing pressure is a key component of pasture-based dairy systems. Thus, the main objective of the present work was to develop a new version of the WFM able to predict residuals, and thereby simulate related effects of grazing pressure dynamically at the farm scale. This objective was accomplished by incorporating a new component model into the WFM. This model represents plant-animal relationships, for example sward structure and herbage intake rate, and resulting level of herbage depletion. The sensitivity of the new version of the WFM was evaluated and then the new WFM was tested against an experimental data set previously used to evaluate the WFM and to illustrate the adequacy and improvement of the model development. Key outputs variables of the new version pertinent to this work (milk production, herbage dry matter intake, intake rate, harvesting efficiency, and residuals) responded acceptably to a range of input variables. The relative prediction errors for monthly and mean annual residual predictions were 20 and 5%, respectively. Monthly predictions of residuals had a line bias (1.5%), with a proportion of square root of mean square prediction error (RMSPE) due to random error of 97.5%. Predicted monthly herbage growth rates had a line bias of 2%, a proportion of RMSPE due to random error of 96%, and a concordance correlation coefficient of 0.87. Annual herbage production was predicted with an RMSPE of 531 (kg of herbage dry matter/ha per year), a line bias of 11%, a proportion of RMSPE due to random error of 80%, and relative prediction errors of 2%. Annual herbage dry matter intake per cow and hectare, both per year, were predicted with RMSPE, relative prediction error, and concordance correlation coefficient of 169 and 692 kg of dry matter, 3 and 4%, and 0.91 and 0.87, respectively. These results indicate that predictions of the new WFM are relatively accurate and precise, with a conclusion that incorporating a plant-animal relationship model into the WFM allows for dynamic predictions of residuals and more realistic simulations of the effect of grazing pressure on herbage production and intake at the farm level without the intervention from the user.  相似文献

Voltammetric methods of analysis represent an attractive option for rapid screening of large numbers of plant samples in the search for novel antioxidants. However, the technique has not found widespread use as compared to established methods such as the DPPH and Folin–Ciocalteu assays. In this study we provide a critical assessment of voltammetric methods compared to the DPPH and Folin–Ciocalteu assay by conducting antioxidant assays using these methods in a study of 99 crude samples of marine algae. Thirty samples showed the presence of antioxidants via the voltammetric assay compared with 20 samples for the DPPH assay and 16 via the FC assay. Through a detailed interpretation of the results the study suggests that voltammetric methods can identify potential antioxidants in crude samples with a higher degree of confidence than DPPH or the FC method alone and represents a viable screening method for marine algal samples.  相似文献

Methodological problems occur in measuring herbage intake and diet quality during short-term (4-24 h) progressive defoliations by grazing. Several models were developed to describe pasture component selection by grazing ruminants, particularly sheep. These models contain empirical coefficients to determine preferences that require laborious and data-demanding calibration. The objective was to develop a simple and practical model of changes in diet composition (green:dead) of pastures strip-grazed by dairy cows. The model was based on 3 premises when cows are strip-grazed in relatively homogeneous swards: 1) cows eat dead material only when green leaf and uncontaminated material have been removed; 2) dead material increases toward the bottom of the sward canopy; and 3) cows progressively defoliate pasture in layers. The main simplification in this model was assuming a linear decrease of green mass from the top to the bottom of the sward canopy. Thus, the proportion of green mass in the stratum eaten depended on the proportion of green in the entire sward canopy and its vertical profile. The model offers a simple solution to estimate changes in dietary compositions in pastures strip-grazed by dairy cattle during progressive pasture defoliations. It uses 2 inputs, the green mass proportion of the total herbage mass and the proportion of total herbage mass eaten during grazing. This can be optionally complemented with inputs of herbage chemical composition. The main outputs of the model are the proportions of green and dead herbage mass in the diet. For example, if the green proportion in the sward was 0.5 and the proportion of herbage mass eaten was 0.5, then the diet would be 0.75 green:0.25 dead; assuming 0.8 and 0.4 digestibility for green and dead material, respectively, the diet digestibility would be 0.7.  相似文献

Ferrochrome (FeCr) production is an energy-intensive process. Currently, the pelletized chromite pre-reduction process, also referred to as solid-state reduction of chromite, is most likely the FeCr production process with the lowest specific electricity consumption, i.e., MWh/t FeCr produced. In this study, the effects of carbonaceous reductant selection on chromite pre-reduction and cured pellet strength were investigated. Multiple linear regression analysis was employed to evaluate the effect of reductant characteristics on the aforementioned two parameters. This yielded mathematical solutions that can be used by FeCr producers to select reductants more optimally in future. Additionally, the results indicated that hydrogen (H)- (24 pct) and volatile content (45.8 pct) were the most significant contributors for predicting variance in pre-reduction and compressive strength, respectively. The role of H within this context is postulated to be linked to the ability of a reductant to release H that can induce reduction. Therefore, contrary to the current operational selection criteria, the authors believe that thermally untreated reductants (e.g., anthracite, as opposed to coke or char), with volatile contents close to the currently applied specification (to ensure pellet strength), would be optimal, since it would maximize H content that would enhance pre-reduction.  相似文献

The in vitro effects of angiotensin II (Ang II) in human vessels are not well studied. The development of specific Ang II-receptor antagonists has made it possible to delineate more carefully the receptor mechanisms involved. The objective of this study was twofold: to investigate the effect of Ang II on human coronary arteries and to study the effects of angiotensin II type 1 receptor blockade with losartan. The setting was contractile experiments with ring segments of coronary arteries. We observed that Ang II is a vasoconstrictor of human coronary arteries, with a pEC50 value of 9.26 +/- 0.22 and Emax of 68.7 +/- 9.61% of potassium-induced contraction. Losartan (10-100 nM) shifted the concentration-response curve of Ang II to the right, with pEC50 values of 7.64 +/- 0.10 and 7.00 +/- 0.15, respectively (p = 0.001), demonstrating the antagonistic properties of losartan. We also noted a decreased maximal response to Ang II after incubation of losartan, with Emax of 51.1 +/- 7.08% and 41.9 +/- 4.70% (p = 0.05), respectively. In conclusion, this is the first report describing the contractile effect of Ang II and the antagonizing effects of losartan in isolated human coronary arteries.  相似文献
