This paper reports the thermal, morphological and mechanical properties of environmentally friendly poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)/poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and PHB/poly[(butylene succinate)-co-(butylene adipate)] (PBSA) blends, prepared by melt mixing. The blends are known to be immiscible, as also confirmed by the thermodynamic analysis here presented. A detailed quantification of the crystalline and amorphous fractions was performed, in order to interpret the mechanical properties of the blends. As expected, the ductility increased with increasing PBS or PBSA amount, but in parallel the decrease in the elastic modulus appeared limited. Surprisingly, the elastic modulus was found properly described by the rule of mixtures in the whole composition range, thus attesting mechanical compatibility between the two blend components. This unusual behavior has been explained as due to co-continuous morphology, present in a wide composition range, but also at the same time as the result of shrinkage occurring during sequential crystallization of the two components, which can lead to physical adhesion between matrix and dispersed phase. For the first time, the elastic moduli of the crystalline and mobile amorphous fractions of PBS and PBSA and of the mobile amorphous fraction of PHB at ambient temperature have been estimated through a mechanical modelling approach. © 2021 The Authors. Background  

Excess body fat is a major risk factor for disease primarily due to its endocrine activity. In recent years several criteria have been introduced to evaluate this factor. Nevertheless, treatment need is currently assessed only on the basis of an individual's Body Mass Index (BMI), calculated as body weight (in kg) divided by height in m2. The aim of our study was to determine whether application of the BMI, compared to adiposity-based criteria, results in underestimation of the number of subjects needing lifestyle intervention.  相似文献

A 2D/2D heterojunction of black phosphorous (BP)/graphitic carbon nitride (g‐C3N4) is designed and synthesized for photocatalytic H2 evolution. The ice‐assisted exfoliation method developed herein for preparing BP nanosheets from bulk BP, leads to high yield of few‐layer BP nanosheets (≈6 layers on average) with large lateral size at reduced duration and power for liquid exfoliation. The combination of BP with g‐C3N4 protects BP from oxidation and contributes to enhanced activity both under λ > 420 nm and λ > 475 nm light irradiation and to long‐term stability. The H2 production rate of BP/g‐C3N4 (384.17 µmol g?1 h?1) is comparable to, and even surpasses that of the previously reported, precious metal‐loaded photocatalyst under λ > 420 nm light. The efficient charge transfer between BP and g‐C3N4 (likely due to formed N? P bonds) and broadened photon absorption (supported both experimentally and theoretically) contribute to the excellent photocatalytic performance. The possible mechanisms of H2 evolution under various forms of light irradiation is unveiled. This work presents a novel, facile method to prepare 2D nanomaterials and provides a successful paradigm for the design of metal‐free photocatalysts with improved charge‐carrier dynamics for renewable energy conversion.  相似文献

Actually, most of the electric energy is being produced by fossil fuels and great is the search for viable alternatives. The most appealing and promising technology is photovoltaics. It will become truly mainstream when its cost will be comparable to other energy sources. One way is to significantly enhance device efficiencies, for example by increasing the number of band gaps in multijunction solar cells or by favoring charge separation in the devices. This can be done by using cells based on nanostructured semiconductors. In this paper, we will present ab-initio results of the structural, electronic and optical properties of (1) silicon and germanium nanoparticles embedded in wide band gap materials and (2) mixed silicon-germanium nanowires. We show that theory can help in understanding the microscopic processes important for devices performances. In particular, we calculated for embedded Si and Ge nanoparticles the dependence of the absorption threshold on size and oxidation, the role of crystallinity and, in some cases, the recombination rates, and we demonstrated that in the case of mixed nanowires, those with a clear interface between Si and Ge show not only a reduced quantum confinement effect but display also a natural geometrical separation between electron and hole.  相似文献

An experimental study has been conducted to determine the combined effects of different extraction conditions and precipitation method on the yield and quality of high methoxyl pectin from lemon peels. Pectin was extracted using different mineral acids (HCl, HNO3 and H2SO4) at four concentration levels (0.025; 0.05; 0.1 and 0.2  m ), at 70 °C for 4 h. The soluble pectin was precipitated by iso-propanol or by an aluminium sulphate, Al2(SO4)3, solution at pH 4. The extraction with HCl and HNO3, at the highest concentrations investigated, followed by aluminium precipitation led to the best results in terms of yield (22–25%), quality and gelling power of pectin with a remarkable decrease of alcohol consumption as compared to the alcoholic precipitation under the same extracting conditions.  相似文献

The preparation of films from blends of collagen and poly(vinyl alcohol) is described and the transport properties of these films are evaluated. Different crosslinking procedures, dehydrothermal crosslinking and crosslinking by glutaraldehyde, have been used. The transport properties of these films have been studied using model solutes such as sodium chloride, vitamin B12 and bovine albumin. The results are compared with those obtained using commercial products such as Cuprophan® and poly(acrylonitrile) dialysis membranes. The aim of our study was to analyse the effects of different crosslinking methods and the effects of blending with poly(vinyl alcohol) upon the permeation characteristics of collagen-based membranes.  相似文献

A major challenge in molecular electronics is to develop logic devices based on a truly intramolecular switching mechanism. Recently, a new type of molecular device has been proposed where the switching characteristic is mediated by the bistability in the position of the two hydrogen atoms which can occupy different, energetically equivalent positions (tautomerization) in the inner cavity of porphyrins and naphthalocyanines. Up to now, such a reaction has only been exploited at low temperatures and induced or detected through atomic scale manipulation. In addition, the unpredictability of the tautomer orientation currently excludes molecular interconnection to functional electronic circuits. Here, full evidence is provided that, following a newly proposed growth strategy, 2D layers of metal‐free tetraphenylporphyrins (H2TPP) show frozen tautomerization even at room temperature on macroscopic domains, with the H atoms aligned along a direction settled a priori. This behavior is ascribed to the buckling of the molecule, anchored to the substrate, which removes the degeneracy between the two tautomer alignments. On this basis, a new way to exploit uniaxially oriented H2TPP tautomers in a first elementary logic device is proposed.  相似文献

A comparison of the performance of Brassica carinata oil-derived biodiesel with a commercial rapeseed oil-derived biodiesel and petroleum diesel fuel is discussed as regards engine performance and regulated and unregulated exhaust emissions. B. carinata is an oil crop that can be cultivated in coastal areas of central-southern Italy, where it is more difficult to achieve the productivity potentials of Brassica napus (by far the most common rapeseed cultivated in continental Europe). Experimental tests were carried out on a turbocharged direct injection passenger car diesel engine fueled with 100% biodiesel. The unregulated exhaust emissions were characterized by determining the SOOT and soluble organic fraction content in the particulate matter, together with analysis of the content and speciation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, some of which are potentially carcinogenic, and of carbonyl compounds (aldehydes, ketones) that act as ozone precursors. B. carinata and commercial biodiesel behaved similarly as far as engine performance and regulated and unregulated emissions were concerned. When compared with petroleum diesel fuel, the engine test bench analysis did not show any appreciable variation of output engine torque values, while there was a significant difference in specific fuel consumption data at the lowest loads for the biofuels and petroleum diesel fuel. The biofuels were observed to produce higher levels of NOx concentrations and lower levels of PM with respect to the diesel fuel. The engine heat release analysis conducted shows that there is a potential for increased thermal NOx generation when firing biodiesel with no prior modification to the injection timing. It seems that, for both the biofuels, this behavior is caused by an advanced combustion evolution, which is particularly apparent at the higher loads. When compared with petroleum diesel fuel, biodiesel emissions contain less SOOT, and a greater fraction of the particulate was soluble. The analysis and speciation of the soluble organic fraction of biodiesel particulate suggest that the carcinogenic potential of the biodiesel emissions is probably lower than that of petroleum diesel. Its better adaptivity and productivity in clay and sandy-type soils and in semiarid temperate climate and the fact that the performance of its derived biodiesel is quite similar to commercial biodiesel make B. carinata a promising oil crop that could offer the possibility of exploiting the Mediterranean marginal areas for energetic purposes.  相似文献

Collagen, a natural macromolecular protein from renewable resources, is widely used in many industrial applications. Mixtures of low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) with collagen hydrolizate derived from the tannery industry were investigated to assess the feasibility of producing polymeric materials suitable for production of thermoplastic items for applications in packaging and agricultural segments. Different grades of polyethylenes and collagen hydrolizates characterized by different molecular weight and salinity were investigated to develop optimal blends. The physical–chemical properties of the obtained blends were assessed by thermal–mechanical, spectroscopical analysis. Following the ongoing research activity, the reutilization of collagen hydrolizate derived from the leather industry for the production of environmental degradable polyethylene‐based thermoplastic films appears feasible and promising. Blends of collagen hydrolizate and LDPE up to 20–30 wt % of collagen hydrolizate allow obtaining slightly opaque, cohesive and flexible films that show satisfactory thermal–mechanical responses. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. One of the main challenges for Silicon-Germanium nanowires (SiGe NWs) electronics is the possibility to modulate and engine their electronic properties in an easy way, in order to obtain a material with the desired electronic features. Diameter and composition constitute two crucial ways for the modification of the band gap and of the band structure of SiGe NWs. Within the framework of density functional theory we present results of ab initio calculations regarding the band structure dependence of SiGe NWs on diameter and composition. We point out the main differences with respect to the case of pure Si and Ge wires and we discuss the particular features of SiGe NWs that are useful for future technological applications.  相似文献
