Among oil compounds, fatty acids, tocopherols and xanthophylls (lutein and zeaxanthin) are of special interest due to their nutritional properties. The identification and quantification of these compounds in pecan nuts (Carya illinoinensis) could therefore be very useful to produce functional foods rich in compounds of this type. This paper reports studies on their accumulation and the effect of ripening on the content of these high value-added compounds. The total lipid content increased during the ripening. Saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids decreased significantly, whereas, monounsaturated fatty acids increased during the ripening of pecan nut fruit. Maximum levels of total tocopherol (279.53 mg/kg oil) and xanthophyll (6.18 mg/kg oil) were detected at 20th weeks after the flowering date. These amounts decreased gradually as ripening advances. The early stages of pecan ripening seem to have nutritional and pharmaceutical interests. These results may be useful for evaluating the pecan nut quality and determining the optimal period when the pecans accumulated the maximum of these nutritional and healthy compounds.  相似文献

Positron emission tomography (PET) was used in a cross-linguistic study to compare pitch processing in native speakers of English, a nontone language, with those of Thai, a tone language. When discriminating pitch patterns in Thai words, only the Thai subjects showed activation in the left frontal operculum. Activation of this region near the classically defined Broca's area suggests that the brain recognizes functional properties, rather than simply acoustic properties, of complex auditory cues in accessing language-specific mechanisms in pitch perception.  相似文献

This paper presents a new application of the dynamic iterated rippled noise (IRN) algorithm by generating dynamic pitch contours representative of those that occur in natural speech in the context of EEG and the frequency following response (FFR). Besides IRN steady state and linear rising stimuli, curvilinear rising stimuli were modeled after pitch contours of natural productions of Mandarin Tone 2. Electrophysiological data on pitch representation at the level of the brainstem, as reflected in FFR, were evaluated for all stimuli, static or dynamic. Autocorrelation peaks were observed corresponding to the fundamental period (tau) as well as spectral bands at the fundamental and its harmonics for both a low and a high iteration step. At the higher iteration step, both spectral and temporal FFR representations were more robust, indicating that both acoustic properties may be utilized for pitch extraction at the level of the brainstem. By applying curvilinear IRN stimuli to elicit FFRs, we can evaluate the effects of temporal degradation on 1) the neural representation of linguistically-relevant pitch features in a target population (e.g., cochlear implant) and 2) the efficacy of signal processing schemes in conventional hearing aids and cochlear implants to recover these features.  相似文献

Trans10,cis12‐conjugated linoleic acid (t10,c12‐CLA) increases liver weights and hepatic lipids in mice. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of CLA isomers (t10,c12‐CLA or c9,t11‐CLA) and carnitine palmitoyl transferase‐1 (CPT‐1) inhibitors (etomoxir or hemipalmitoylcarnitinium) on CPT‐1 mRNA, fatty acid profile, and cholesterol synthesis in AML‐12 and HepG2 cells. t10,c12‐CLA was incorporated to a greater extent in both cell lines than c9,t11‐CLA. In addition, t10,c12‐CLA increased the free cholesterol content of AML‐12 and HepG2 cells four‐ and fivefold, respectively. Cells incubated with medium containing CPT‐1 inhibitors or t10,c12‐CLA had higher levels of mRNA for CPT‐1 in both cell lines, indicating an increased fatty acid oxidation in hepatic cell lines due to t10,c12‐CLA. Following treatment withdrawal, percentages of c9,t11‐CLA or t10,c12‐CLA remained elevated in cells initially treated with c9,t11‐CLA or t10,c12‐CLA, suggesting a potential for carryover effects of the CLA isomers. The results presented here demonstrate a potential role for t10,c12‐CLA in the modulation of hepatic fatty acid oxidation and cholesterol synthesis.  相似文献

Vertical movement of the larynx during connected speech was investigated in Standard Thai - a language that has five phonologically contrastive tones. The effects of pitch, consonant phonation-type, vowel quality, tonal categories, and position in the utterance were determined. Utterance position was found to be the factor most clearly associated with variations in larynx movement. The occurrence of an overall rise-fall pattern of larynx movement distributed over utterances of varying pitch patterns leads to the conclusion that larynx height is not a principal factor regulating pitch in connected speech. Implications for models of pitch production, distinctive features for tone, theories on the historical development of tone and the role of larynx movements in the production of consonants and vowels are discussed.  相似文献
