Sequencing Batch Reactor Technology: Concepts, Design and Experiences (Abridged)

The sequencing batch reactor is a specific fill-and-draw version of the activated-sludge process. In contrast to the continuous-flow alternative, metabolic reactions and solid-liquid separation are carried out in one tank and in a well-defined and continuously repeated time sequence.
This paper reviews the historical development of sequencing batch reactor technology and describes the different modes of operation. Mass-balance equations are introduced to allow for a quantitative comparison of sequencing batch reactor and continuous-flow technologies and for the design of such systems. The initial design dynamic simulation and in-situ adjustment of the cycle program under the actual process conditions can be used conveniently to further optimize the sequencing batch reactor plant.

Übersicht Als Ergänzung der Arbeiten zahlreicher anderer Verfasser wird ein vollständiges System der exakten Formeln vorgelegt, die bei Festigkeitsberechnungen an Freileitungen und Luftkabeln mit festen Aufhängepunkten eine Rolle spielen.Aus den exakten, für das praktische Rechnen wenig geeigneten Gleichungen werden einfach zu handhabende Formeln für Spannfalder beliebiger Neigung abgeleitet, die sich von den bekannten dadurch unterscheiden, daß sie durch Korrekturfaktoren praktisch fehlerfrei gemacht sind. Die Korrekturfaktoren stehen in Form von Kurvenscharen zur Verfügung Außerdem wird ein allgemein anwendbares nomographisches Verfahren zur Aufstellung von Montagetabellen angegeben.

Summary A complete system covering the exact equations required when calculating the powers or tensions of overhead lines and aerial cables with fixed suspension points is submitted as supplement to the papers by other authors.From the exact equations, which are not very suitable for practical calculation, easily computable equations are derived for spans of all degrees of incline. These differ from the known ones in that correction factors are available as families of curves. A method using a chart diagram and having general application is given for listing installation tables.

Ein Beitrag zur analytischen Behandlung des harmonischen Spektrums des Ausgangssignals bei einem nichtlinearen System

Übersicht In der vorliegenden Studie wird das Ziel verfolgt, die Form des Ausgangssignals in einem elektromagnetischen Netzwerk zu berechnen. Der zeitliche Verlauf der Ausgangsgröße wird unter Berücksichtigung der Nichtlinearität des ferromagnetischen Mediums ermittelt. Das Rechenverfahren wurde auf einen Transformator im Bereich der Eisensättigung angewendet. Die rechnerischen Ergebnisse stimmen mit experimentell gewonnenen gut überein.

Contents An algorithm for the calculation of the output signal harmonics in a nonlinear electromagnetic AC network is presented. Nonlinearity of the ferromagnetic elements has been taken into account. Good agreement between theoretical and experimental results has been found.

Beitrag zur asynchronen Linearmaschine mit ortsabhängiger Sekundärleitfähigkeit

Übersicht Bei asynchronen Linearmaschinen, wie dem Langstatormotor mit diskontinuierlicher Statoranordnung und steuerbarem Sekundärteil für Schnellbahnantriebe, dem Flüssigmetall-MHD-Wandler oder dem Sektormotor ist eine Herabsetzung der Sekundärleitfähigkeit außerhalb des Statorbereiches möglich. Der Einfluß einer solchen ortsabhängigen Leitfähigkeit des Sekundärteils auf die Feld- und Stromverteilung und auf die Betriebskennlinien wird untersucht.

The influence of a stator position dependent conductivity of the secondary on field and current distribution and on the characteristics is analysed.

Diffuse Sources of Pollution by Heavy Metals

Significant reductions in the amount of heavy metals released to the aquatic environment have been achieved by applying strict controls on point source industrial discharges. Because of these tight controls, diffuse pollution sources have increased in importance as a contribution to the total load. Diffuse inputs originate mainly from the use of chemical products. Thus control of these inputs can be achieved by refraining from or limiting the use of these products or by restricting the amount of heavy metals permitted in such products. Control of diffuse sources of heavy metals could be based on a 'positive approval'system, permitting only those uses which do not lead to environmental harm and which could not be replaced by less harmful alternatives. Assessing the environmental impact of the alternatives will require the introduction of a 'cradle to grave'approach.
