The generation effect occurs if people remember items they complete from fragments better than complete items they read. Four experiments investigate two questions. When does the effect occur, and why does it do so? Targets generated in related contexts are recognized better than read targets, and they are recalled better with the contexts as cues; the contexts are recognized equally well, and the relation between the context and target is not enhanced by generation. Furthermore, generated items exceed items read in pure lists even when read ones from the mixed list are no worse than the controls. The generation effect is real; it is not an artifact. However, there is nothing special about generation. Generating is a type of encoding, and like any other type of encoding, its effects are maximal on tests that require subjects to do again whatever they did at study. Generating makes targets distinctive by contrasting them with other relatives of the context, and, as a result, the targets enjoy benefits in later discriminations within their family. Susceptibility of C57BL/6 (Bcgs) and C3H/HeN (Bcgr) mice to an intraperitoneal infection with Mycobacterium paratuberculosis strain 19698 was compared (by histopathology and the number of mycobacteria isolated from the spleen). Mycobacterial counts from the spleen of Bcgr mice progressively decreased over the course of infection but remained unchanged in Bcgs mice. Granulomatous lesions and acid-fast bacteria were consistently present in the liver and lymph nodes of Bcgs mice, whereas lesions were transient or absent in Bcgr mice. These results indicate that Bcgr mice are inherently resistant to M. paratuberculosis, whereas Bcgs mice are inherently susceptible. These differences may prove useful in elucidating the mechanisms of resistance and susceptibility to paratuberculosis and other mycobacterial infections.  相似文献

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Intestinal smooth muscle cells (ISMCs) express major histocompatibility complex II (MCH II) and intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) after exposure to interferon gamma (IFN-gamma). T lymphocytes invade the intestinal musculature during Crohn's disease or pseudoobstruction. The aim of this study was to determine whether ISMCs activate syngeneic T cells via MHC II and ICAM-1. METHODS: Cultured murine ISMCs were exposed to IFN-gamma for 72 hours and analyzed for Mac-1 (CD11B CD18) antigen, MHC II, and ICAM-1 expression using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and fluorescence-activated cell sorter scan. T lymphocytes from mesenteric lymph nodes of ovalbumin-sensitized mice were examined for their ability to proliferate after coculture with IFN-gamma-pretreated and ovalbumin-pretreated ISMCs using [3H]thymidine incorporation. RESULTS: ISMCs expressed smooth muscle alpha-actin before and after IFN-gamma exposure. No macrophages were identified in these cultures. Exposure to IFN-gamma and ovalbumin for 72 hours induced MHC II and ICAM-1 expression; these treated ISMCs induced T-cell proliferation, whereas untreated ISMCs did not. T-cell proliferation was markedly enhanced by adding interleukin 2 and was blocked by antibodies against MHC II and ICAM-1. CONCLUSIONS: ISMCs activate T lymphocytes in an MHC II-linked manner and thus possess the ability to modulate immune function in the gut.  相似文献

Microwave radiometers are often required to operate under all weather conditions, including those under which an exposed surface of the antenna system becomes wetted by rain. Here we discuss the special case of a wetted flat reflector, with energy at 20.60 and 31.65 GHz linearly and orthogonally polarized at an incidence angle of 45°. The brightness temperatures produced by the wet reflector are computed from conventional theory, and are measured for various thicknesses of water layer. Both theory and experiment show that the brightness temperatures produced by the wet reflector have the same behavior throughout a range of water-layer thicknesses. The impact of these results on design of radiometers for research and operational application is discussed.  相似文献

Words that are generated as responses to incomplete stimuli are remembered better than complete words that are read. The present research shows that the generation effect occurs only if both reading and generating are done in the same list. Comparisons with unmixed reading controls reveal that the effect occurs because the read words are remembered poorly; the generated ones are no better than the controls. Therefore, the question for theories is not why generating helps memory, but why the demand to generate makes people lazy readers. Furthermore, cued recall of pairs of unrelated words is worse if they were generated than if they were read. We propose that generation is a demand to identify words as independent events. The instar and outstar synaptic models are among the oldest and most useful in the field of neural networks. In this paper we show how to approximate the behavior of instar and outstar synapses in neuromorphic electronic systems using memristive nanodevices and spiking neurons. Memristive nanodevices are especially attractive for this application since such devices are tiny, can be densely packed in crossbar-like structures and possess the long time constants, or memory, needed by the synaptic models.  相似文献
