Improvements in methods for disinfecting fresh-cut cantaloupe could reduce spoilage losses and reduce the risk of foodborne illness from human pathogen contamination. The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using hot-water treatment in combination with low-dose irradiation to reduce native microbial populations while maintaining the quality of fresh-cut cantaloupe. Whole cantaloupes were washed in tap water at 20 or 76 degrees C for 3 min. Fresh-cut cantaloupe cubes, prepared from the washed fruit, were then packaged in clamshell containers, and half the samples were exposed to 0.5 kGy of gamma radiation. Native microflora populations and sensory qualities were evaluated during the subsequent 7 days of storage at 4 degrees C. The hot-water surface pasteurization reduced the microflora population by 3.3 log on the surface of whole fruits, resulting in a lower microbial load on the fresh-cut cubes compared with cubes cut from fruit treated with cold water. Irradiation of cubes prepared from untreated fruit to an absorbed dose of 0.5 kGy achieved a low microbial load similar to that of cubes prepared from hot-water-treated fruit. The combination of the two treatments was able to further reduce the microflora population. During storage, the headspace atmosphere of the packages was not significantly influenced by any of the treatments. Color, titratable acidity, pH, ascorbic acid, firmness, and drip loss were not consistently affected by treatment with irradiation, hot water, or the combination of the two. Cubes prepared from hot-water-treated whole fruit had slightly lower soluble solids content. The combination of hot-water pasteurization of whole cantaloupe and low-dose irradiation of packaged fresh-cut melon can reduce the population of native microflora while maintaining the quality of this product.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Although ionizing radiation effectively inactivates food-borne bacterial pathogens in fresh-cut fruits and vegetables, it may adversely affect product quality. In this study, the effects of calcium ascorbate (CaA) and ionizing radiation on quality of 'Gala' apple slices under modified atmosphere packaging were investigated. 'Gala' apple slices, treated with water or 7% CaA followed by either nonirradiation (0 kGy) or irradiation at 0.5 and 1.0 kGy, were stored at 10°C for up to 3 wk. The titratable acidity, pH, firmness, ascorbic acid content, color, and microflora population were measured weekly throughout storage. Irradiation did not affect titratable acidity and pH of sliced apples. Fruit slices softened during irradiation and storage, but this decrease in firmness during storage was reduced by the CaA treatment. Although the ascorbic acid content of apple slices treated with CaA decreased rapidly during storage, the ascorbic acid content was always higher in those treated samples than in the apple slices treated with water. Irradiation decreased both L * and hue values of apple slices. Hue values decreased during the entire storage period while L * increased during the 1st wk of storage, then decreased between 1 to 3 wk of storage. CaA increased L * and hue values of apple slices, suggesting CaA reduced browning, even in irradiated samples. The microflora population of apples slices was not affected by CaA, and CaA treatment did not alter the reduction in microflora by irradiation. The combination of CaA and irradiation enhanced microbial food safety while maintaining quality of fresh-cut apple slices.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To study prospectively the course of attention-deficit hyperactivity (ADH) symptomatology in children and adolescents after traumatic brain injury (TBI). It was hypothesized that ADH symptomatology would be significantly related to severity of injury. METHOD: Subjects were children (n = 50) aged 6 to 14 years at the time they were hospitalized after TBI. The study used a prospective follow-up design. Assessments of preinjury psychiatric, behavioral, socioeconomic, family functioning, and family psychiatric history status were conducted. Severity of injury was assessed by standard clinical scales, and neuroimaging was analyzed. RESULTS: The main finding of this study was that change in ADH symptomatology in the first 2 years after TBI in children and adolescents was significantly related to severity of injury. Overall ADH symptomatology during the study was significantly related to a measure of family dysfunction when family psychiatric history, socioeconomic status, and severity of injury were controlled. CONCLUSION: The presence of a positive "dose-response" relationship between severity of injury and change in ADH symptoms, present from the 3-month assessment, was consistent with an effect directly related to brain damage.  相似文献

Secondary dispersions of cationic segmented polyurethanes (PUs) with thermoresponsivity (upper critical solution temperature (UCST) in water), high solid contents and antibacterial properties are highlighted in this paper. PUs were prepared by polyaddition reactions and subsequent quaternization with methyl iodide. No additional stabilizers, organic solvents or special procedures were required to obtain stable aqueous dispersions containing up to 10 wt% PU; in contrast, stable dispersions were straightforwardly accessed by a combination of UCST behavior and repulsive electrostatic forces among the positively charged segments, which meets the requirements of a green chemistry process. Particle size and UCST strongly depended on the solid content of the dispersions and the content of poly(ethylene glycol) segments in the copolymers. The dispersions exhibited fast‐acting antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Inhibition of Oxidative and Antioxidative Enzymes by Trans-Resveratrol   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
ABSTRACT: Trans-resveratrol, a phytoalexin produced by a variety of plants, has been shown to inhibit oxidative enzymes in an animal cell system. Its effect on several oxidative and antioxidative enzymes from plants was investigated using in vitro assays. Trans-resveratrol inhibited superoxide dismutase, lipoxygenase, catalase, peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid oxidase with apparent KI's of 10, 90, 100, 255, 305, and 350 μM, respectively. Trans-resveratrol inhibited lipoxygenase activity more effectively than other lipoxygenase inhibitors, including propyl gallate, ibuprofen, ursolic acid, acetylsalicylic acid, and salicylhydroxamic acid.  相似文献

The interactive effects of calcium ascorbate (CaA) and ionizing radiation on viability of Listeria monocytogenes inoculated in solutions and on ‘Gala’ apple slices were investigated. The D10 values (radiation doses that inactivate 90% of bacterial population) for L. monocytogenes inoculated in water, 3.5%, and 7.0% CaA solutions were 0.32, 0.61, and 0.58 kGy, respectively. The D10 values of the pathogen on the surface of apple slices treated with water, 3.5%, and 7.0% CaA were 0.24, 0.32, and 0.32 kGy, respectively. To determine the impact of CaA and irradiation on quality of apple slices, apple slices treated with 0%, 3.5%, and 7.0% CaA were exposed to 1.6 kGy gamma radiation (a dose that produced a 5‐log reduction of L. monocytogenes) and stored under modified atmosphere at 4 °C for 14 d. CaA at levels of both 3.5% and 7.0% prevented the browning of the apple slices. The apple aroma intensity, however, decreased as the concentration of CaA increased. Irradiation at 1.6 kGy did not significantly affect color, soluble solid content, titratable acidity, or apple aroma intensity. The only negative effect of irradiation on apple slices appeared to be a loss of firmness. Our results suggest that CaA, used as an antibrowning agent, protected L. monocytogenes from radiation both in solution and on apple slices, but radiation at doses sufficient to inactivate 5‐log of the bacterium did not significantly influence product quality attributes except for the loss in firmness.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To extend findings regarding predictive factors of psychiatric outcome from the first to the second year after traumatic brain injury (TBI) in children and adolescents. METHOD: Subjects were children aged 6 to 14 years at the time they were hospitalized after TBI. The study used a prospective follow-up design. Assessments of preinjury psychiatric, behavioral, adaptive functioning, family functioning and family psychiatric history status were conducted. Severity of injury was assessed by standard clinical scales and neuroimaging was analyzed. The outcome measure was the presence of a psychiatric disorder, not present before the injury ("novel"), during the second year after TBI. RESULTS: Fifty subjects enrolled, and the analyses focused on 42 subjects followed at 24 months. Severity of injury, preinjury family function, and preinjury lifetime psychiatric history predicted the development of a "novel" psychiatric disorder present in the second year. CONCLUSION: These data suggest that there are children, identifiable through clinical assessment, at increased risk for "novel" psychiatric disorders in the second year after TBI.  相似文献

We report on the progress that we have made in the quality of our baseline process for the production of high efficiency soda lime glass/Mo/Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS)/CdS/i‐ZnO/ZnO:Al/MgF2 solar cells. The enhancement of the average performance level has enabled us to reach conversion efficiencies of up to 19·3% (internal measurement). The new quality initiative uses process control, optical and electrical modelling, and the critical revision of all process steps as tools for the attainment of the 19% efficiency level. Our experiments show that the compositional process window for CIGS solar cells that have an efficiency of η ≈ 19% is very wide. Accordingly, we suggest that an efficiency of 19·0–19·5% is achievable in the following compositional process windows: 0·69 ≤ Cu/(Ga + In) ≤ 0·98 and 0·21 ≤ Ga/(Ga + In) ≤ 0·38. In addition, our results show that large CIGS grains are not a necessary requirement for high efficiencies up to 19%. These findings and the partly lacking ability to correlate certain aspects of our progress with experimental parameters lead us to the conclusion that there are still some important process variables undiscovered. From this conclusion and from the evaluation of the available data we infer that there is a potential for the enhancement of CIGS solar cell efficiencies beyond 20%. The presented examples show the possibility to obtain actual information on the stiffness distribution and constraint parameters of a piping system by a non-destructive method without demounting hangers. A strategy for model updating by means of ambient vibration analysis is being developed to determine the real constraints of a piping system quantitatively. Hereby the amplitude dependency of the hanger stiffness must be investigated carefully.  相似文献

Cu(In,Ga)Se2 Solar cells with graded band gap and efficiencies up to 13% have been fabricated on transparent ZnO:Al back contacts. The back contact structure includes a transparent 10 nm thin Mo interlayer with NaF precursor between the ZnO:Al and the Cu(In,Ga)Se2 absorber that transforms the blocking ZnO:Al/Cu(In,Ga)Se2 interface into an Ohmic back contact. To investigate the electronic quality of the back contact, the cells are analyzed by internal quantum efficiency measurements under illumination from front and back side. A new semianalytical model for the quantum efficiency of graded band gap absorbers yields quantitative information about the back contact recombination velocity as well as optical and electronic material parameters of the absorber layer. Band gap grading significantly increases carrier collection. However, in the immediate vicinity of the back contact carrier collection is limited by a high ratio of back contact recombination velocity and diffusion constant .  相似文献
