Transfer of learning in virtual environments: a new challenge?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The aim of all education is to apply what we learn in different contexts and to recognise and extend this learning to new situations. Virtual learning environments can be used to build skills. Recent research in cognitive psychology and education has shown that acquisitions are linked to the initial context. This provides a challenge for virtual reality in education or training. A brief overview of transfer issues highlights five main ideas: (1) the type of transfer enables the virtual environment (VE) to be classified according to what is learned; (2) the transfer process can create conditions within the VE to facilitate transfer of learning; (3) specific features of VR must match and comply with transfer of learning; (4) transfer can be used to assess a VE’s effectiveness; and (5) future research on transfer of learning must examine the singular context of learning. This paper discusses how new perspectives in cognitive psychology influence and promote transfer of learning through the use of VEs.  相似文献

Linear viscoelastic, steady shear behaviors, and morphologies of starch formate/poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) blends, compatibilized by oligomers and obtained by reactive extrusion, have been investigated as a function of formic acid (FA)/starch ratio, nature, and molecular weight of the oligomer. The rheological properties of these blends have been compared with those of a commercial starch-based thermoplastic, namely Mater-Bi® ZF03UA. In presence of FA, starch is destructured to starch formate and oligomers are used as plasticizers. The linear viscoelastic response of blends is quite similar to that of nanocomposite materials: the low frequency behavior is attributed to a percolated network of destructured starch particles, and the high frequency behavior is that of the polymer matrix. The viscosity curve presents a profile characterized by two plateau regions, at low and high shear rates. The plateau region at low shear rates corresponds to the viscous response of the blend while that observed at high shear rates can be attributed to the PCL matrix. The compatibilization is enhanced in the presence of starch formate and increases with increasing the oligomer molecular weight. Hierarchical hypercubes (HHC), also known as cube-connected cubes, have been introduced in the literature as an interconnection network for massively parallel systems. Effectively, they can connect a large number of nodes while retaining a small diameter and a low degree compared to a hypercube of the same size. Especially (2 m +m)-dimensional hierarchical hypercubes ( $\mathit {HHC}_{2^{m}+m}$ ), called perfect HHCs, are popular as they are symmetrical, which is a critical property when designing routing algorithms. In this paper, we describe an algorithm finding, in an $\mathit{HHC}_{2^{m}+m}$ , mutually node-disjoint paths connecting k=?(m+1)/2? pairs of distinct nodes. This problem is known as the k-pairwise disjoint-path routing problem and is one of the important routing problems when dealing with interconnection networks. In an $\mathit{HHC}_{2^{m}+m}$ , our algorithm finds paths of lengths at most 2 m+1+m(2 m+1+1)+4 in O(25m ) time, where 2 m+1 is the diameter of an $\mathit{HHC}_{2^{m}+m}$ . Also, we have shown through an experiment that, in practice, the lengths of the generated paths are significantly lower than the worst-case theoretical estimations.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of 17 alpha-ethinylestradiol treatment of rats on various transport functions in isolated basolateral and canalicular liver plasma membrane vesicles. Both membrane subfractions were purified to a similar degree from control and cholestatic livers. Although moderate membrane lipid alterations were predominantly observed in basolateral vesicles, no change in basolateral Na+/K(+)-ATPase activity was found. Furthermore, while Na(+)-dependent taurocholate uptake was decreased by approximately 40% in basolateral vesicles, the maximal velocity of ATP-dependent taurocholate transport was decreased by 63% in canalicular membranes. In contrast, only minimal changes or no changes at all were observed for electrogenic taurocholate transport in "cholestatic" canalicular membranes and total microsomes, respectively. However, canalicular vesicles from cholestatic livers also exhibited marked reductions in ATP-dependent transport of S-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)glutathione and in Na(+)-dependent uptake of adenosine, while in the same vesicles HCO3-/SO4- exchange and Na+/glycine cotransport activities were markedly stimulated. These data show that in addition to the previously demonstrated sinusoidal transport abnormalities ethinylestradiol-induced cholestasis is also associated with multiple canalicular membrane transport alterations in rat liver. Hence, functional transport alterations at both polar surface domains might ultimately be responsible for the inhibitory effects of estrogens on the organic anion excretory capacity and on bile formation in rat liver.  相似文献

In this paper, micron-scale frequency selective surfaces (FSS) are presented for the first time that exhibit multiple strong stopbands (>10dB) in the far-infrared (IR). Fractal and genetic algorithm (GA) synthesis techniques are employed in the design of single-layer, multiband IR FSS. These designs have been fabricated on thin, flexible polyimide substrates and characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Measurements show excellent agreement with predictions from a periodic method of moments (PMoM) analysis technique that takes into account metallic and dielectric losses. Additional design constraints were incorporated into the GA in order to guarantee that the synthesized FSS structures could be accurately fabricated.  相似文献

In this paper, a new reconfigurable frequency selective surface (RFSS) design concept is introduced. A grid of simple metallic patches interconnected by a matrix of switches is proposed as the unit cell of an RFSS. The switches are independently addressable and provide significant transmission and reflection flexibility over a large range of frequencies. This flexibility is exploited by optimizing the switch settings using a genetic algorithm to produce a desired frequency response. The versatility of the design technique is demonstrated by presenting several examples of genetically optimized RFSS. The first example to be considered is a linearly polarized FSS that can be reconfigured for either single-, dual-, or tri-band operation. An RFSS design is also introduced that can be optimized to have a frequency response that is polarization independent in one state (i.e., for one combination of switch settings) and polarization dependent in another state.  相似文献

Metamaterials provide an unprecedented ability to manipulate electromagnetic waves and are an enabling technology for new devices ranging from flat lenses that focus light beyond the diffraction limit to coatings capable of cloaking an object. Nevertheless, narrow bandwidths and high intrinsic losses arising from the resonant properties of metamaterials have raised doubts about their usefulness. New design approaches seek to turn the perceived disadvantages of dispersion into assets that enhance a device's performance. Here we employ dispersion engineering of metamaterial properties to enable specific device performance over usable bandwidths. In particular, we design metamaterials that considerably improve conventional horn antennas over greater than an octave bandwidth with negligible loss and advance the state of the art in the process. Fabrication and measurement of a metahorn confirm its broadband, low-loss performance. This example illustrates the power of clever implementation combined with dispersion engineering to bring metamaterials into their full potential for revolutionizing practical devices.  相似文献

A bench-scale annular microchannel reactor (AMR) prototype with microchannel width of 0.3 mm and total catalyst length of 9.53 × 10−2 m active for the endothermic steam reforming of methane is presented. Experimental results at a steam to methane feed molar ratio of 3.3:1, reactor temperature of 1023 K, and pressure of 11 bar confirm catalyst power densities upwards of 1380 W per cm3 of catalyst at hydrogen yields >98% of thermodynamic equilibrium. A two-dimensional steady-state computational fluid dynamic model of the AMR prototype was validated using experimental data and subsequently employed to identify suitable operating conditions for an envisioned mass-production AMR design with 0.3 mm annular channel width and a single catalyst length of 254 mm. Thermal efficiencies, defined based upon methane and product hydrogen higher heating values (HHVs), of 72.7–57.7% were obtained from simulations for methane capacities of 0.5–2S LPM (space velocities of 195,000–782,000 h−1) at hydrogen yields corresponding to 99%–75% of equilibrium values. Under these conditions, analysis of local composition, temperature and pressure indicated that catalyst deactivation via coke formation or Nickel oxidation is not thermodynamically favorable. Lastly, initial analysis of an envisioned 10 kW autothermal reformer combining 19 parallel AMRs within a single methane-air combustion chamber, based upon existing manufacturing capabilities within Power & Energy, Inc., is presented.  相似文献

A considerable amount of quantitative and qualitative information on the non-volatile constituents of wine (acids, sugars, and polyols) can be readily obtained, from small sample volumes without prefractionation, by glass capillary gas chromatography of their trimethylsilyl derivatives. A continuous check on the correct functioning of the method, and in particular on the inertness of the glass capillary and injector, is obtained by the use of two internal standards, whose trimethylsilyl derivatives vary considerably in stability. Any variation in the ratio of the peak areas of the latter derivatives indicates incorrect sample preparation or possible adsorptive/catalytic activity of the GC system. As a general method, the technique may be applied to other alcoholic beverages.  相似文献
