Phase-only adaptive nulling with a genetic algorithm

This paper describes a new approach to adaptive phase-only nulling with phased arrays. A genetic algorithm adjusts some of the least significant bits of the beam steering phase shifters to minimize the total output power. Using small adaptive phase values results in minor deviations in the beam steering direction and small perturbations in the sidelobe level in addition to constraining the search space of the genetic algorithm. Various results are presented to show the advantages and limitations of this approach, in general, the genetic algorithm proves to be better than previous phase-only adaptive algorithms     

A randomized trial of cisplatin, etoposide and bleomycin (PEB) versus carboplatin, etoposide and bleomycin (CEB) for patients with 'good-risk' metastatic non-seminomatous germ cell tumors

BACKGROUND: Cisplatin-based combination chemotherapy will cure 70% to 80% of patients with metastatic non-seminomatous germ cell tumors but is associated with the possibility of severe neuro-, oto- and nephro-toxicities. Carboplatin, a cisplatin analogue, is an active drug in testicular cancer with a more favourable spectrum of side effects. In a randomized trial, the German Testicular Cancer Study Group compared a combination regimen of carboplatin, etoposide and bleomycin (CEB) to standard cisplatin, etoposide and bleomycin (PEB) chemotherapy for patients with 'minimal-' and moderate-disease' non-seminomatous germ cell tumors, according to the Indiana University classification. PATIENTS AND METHODS: PEB was given for three cycles at standard doses (given days 1-5), and the CEB regimen consisted of carboplatin (target AUC of 5 mg/ml x min) on day 1, etoposide 120 mg/m2 on days 1 to 3 and bleomycin 30 mg on days 1, 8 and 15. Four cycles of CEB were given, with the omission of bleomycin in the fourth cycle. Thus, the cumulative doses of etoposide and bleomycin applied in the two treatment arms were comparable. Fifty-four patients were entered on the trial, 29 were treated with PEB and 25 with CEB chemotherapy. Patients were stratified according to disease extent (minimal versus moderate) and the degree of tumor marker elevation. Thirty-two patients (59%) belonged to the group with minimal disease and low markers. RESULTS: No significant difference in response to chemotherapy was seen between the two arms, with CR rates of 81% for the PEB arm and 76% for CEB treatment. However, more patients treated with CEB (32% versus 13%) have relapsed after therapy, and 4 patients (16%) have died of disease progression after CEP in contrast to 1 (3%) after PEB therapy. The first interim analysis of negative events (relapse, vital tumor at secondary resection, death from disease and therapy-associated death) showed a significantly higher rate after CEB than after PEB therapy, and the trial was terminated early. After a median follow-up of 33 months for all patients, the calculation of negative events is still significantly in favour of PEB-treated patient, particularly since three late relapses > 2 years have been observed in the CEB arm (P = 0.03). CONCLUSION: This randomized trial demonstrates that even with the use of adequate doses of etoposide and full-dose bleomycin, carboplatin cannot altogether replace cisplatin in patients with testicular cancer. Treatment with the PEB regimen remains the standard approach in patients with 'good-risk' non-seminomatous germ cell tumors.     

On the hypoelastic-idealplastic constitutive model

Summary Recently, the hypoelastic-idealplastic solid under simple shear has been studied. As an unexpected result, the slope of the stress-strain curve at the beginning of the plastic range turned out to be negative. While all other assumptions remained the same, this effect was recognized for all objective stress rates, which have been used for the hypoelastic constitutive law.The main objective of this paper is an interpretation of this remarkable result, where this interpretation should be given in an acceptable and rational form. To this end, we apply the constitutive assumption of the elastic-idealplastic body for comparison.With 1 Figures     

Pilocytic astrocytomas of the posterior fossa. A follow-up study in 33 patients

The extent of resection in pilocytic astrocytoma of the posterior fossa often remains undefined and the indications for further treatment in incompletely resected tumours are a matter of debate. It has been also realized that the problem of hydrocephalus in patients with pilocytic astrocytoma of the posterior fossa has not yet been solved and the diagnostic impact of postoperative CT findings remains questionable. We retrospectively reviewed the data from 33 patients harbouring a pilocytic astrocytoma of the posterior fossa to evaluate the impact of surgical technique in terms of radicality and of postoperative imaging results upon prognosis and adjunctive treatment. In addition, the issue of hydrocephalus was considered and related to different treatment modalities. Thirty patients underwent surgical treatment whereas 3 had open biopsy of the tumour. Macroscopically gross total resection of the tumour was performed in 20 patients, whereas resection was partial in 10. Follow-up was obtained in 29 patients for a period which ranged between 2 and 184 months (85 months +/- 56 months). Outcome was good in 24 patients who had only slight neurological deficit and poor in 3 patients, who were severely disabled. Two patients died during the follow-up period. Recurrent tumour growth occurred in 2 cases with incompletely resected tumours. From the series presented, it was concluded that long-term follow-up with CT seems mandatory in cases with contrast-enhancing residual tumour. Recurrent tumour growth should be assumed in postsurgical patients with an enlarging area of enhancement shown in follow-up CT studies. Permanent ventriculoperitoneal shunting is required in certain patients with pre- or postoperative hydrocephalus.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)     

Resolution and intensity distribution of output images reconstructed by sampled computer-generated holograms

We address reconstruction abilities of computer-generated holograms that are fabricated in a sampled form and designed for spherical-wave illumination. Our approach enables one to define the limit of resolution of the object reconstruction and the light-intensity distribution in an output plane. The analysis takes into account a hologram aperture, a sampling aperture, and a curvature radius of spherical illumination. Theoretical results are confirmed by experimental verification.     

Measurements of the isochoric heatc v at the critical point of SF6 under microgravity: Results of the German Spacelab Mission D2

During the Second German Spacelab Mission D2 (April 26 to May 6, 1993) the isochoric specific heatc _v of SF₆ was measured along the critical isochore under microgravity conditions with a newly developed scanning radiation calorimeter. This calorimeter provided the possibility to perform comparable heating and cooling runs with variable ramp rates since the spherical sample cell was heated and cooled only by radiation. During the experimental time of 220 h, 11 heating and cooling runs with different ramp rates were performed in a temperature range ofT–T _c=±6 K. ApproachingT _c by cooling from the homogeneous one-phase region avoided significant temperature and density gradients in the fluid, which would have distorted the integral measurement ofc _v. The inhomogenities introduced by a finite ramp rate were greatly reduced by the fast dynamic temperature propagation (critical speeding up). Thec _v data achieved with slow cooling runs are in remarkably good agreement with the theoretical prediction more than one order of magnitude closer to the critical point than anyc _v measurements done so far. The preliminary value for the critical exponent is 0.107±0.02, and for the amplitude ratio we obtainedA ^–/A ⁺=1.94±0.07. In contrast to the cooling runs, the heating runs showed a strong hysteresis ofc _v. The SEXTANT Software Exploration Tool

In this paper, we discuss a set of functional requirements for software exploration tools and provide initial evidence that various combinations of these features are needed to effectively assist developers in understanding software. We observe that current tools for software exploration only partly support these features. This has motivated the development of SEXTANT, a software exploration tool tightly integrated into the Eclipse IDE that has been developed to fill this gap. By means of case studies, we demonstrate how the requirements fulfilled by SEXTANT are conducive to an understanding needed to perform a maintenance task
