A scheme for delivery or variable bit-rate (VBR) video over asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks where bandwidth can be renegotiated during the duration of a call between the video source and the network is considered. Renegotiation can be initiated by either the video source or the network. The video bandwidth requirement is characterized by a usage parameter control (UPC) consisting, in general, of peak rate, burst length, and sustained rate. A baseline design is outlined where rate-control adjusts the source's rate while a new UPC is requested from the network. When granted, the new UPC allows the source to maintain its target quantization and delay requirements. Rate control epochs may be extended when the network blocks UPC requests or sets a lower UPC value to temporally deal with congestion. Simulation results are presented for VBR MPEG video. The results show that with a moderate renegotiation rate the scheme tracks the bandwidth requirements of the source. As a result, the video quality and bandwidth efficiency can be maintained  相似文献

We present a model for calculating the friction at the head/tape interface as a function of wrap angle, tape speed, tension and head dimensions. The model is based on the Euler–Bernoulli beam equation and the Reynolds equation. Several refinements relative to previous implementations are introduced: specifically a multi-coefficient slip-flow correction is implemented to deal with the reduction of spacing, the skiving-edge profile is modeled using interferometer microscope measurements to account for edge rounding, and the tension asymmetry due to friction is accounted for. Results from the model are compared with experimental measurements of friction versus wrap angle and tape velocity. The model and the experiment show excellent agreement under the range of conditions studied.  相似文献

A random-digit dialed telephone survey was conducted in a traditionally conservative southern state to determine the level of support for sexuality education in the public schools including support for specific sexuality education topics, the earliest grade level at which each topic should be taught, and the amount of instruction time required for sexuality education in the high schools. Survey data were obtained from 534 South Carolina registered voters in late January/early February 1997. Results demonstrated that most South Carolina registered voters: 1) supported sexuality education in the public schools; 2) supported instruction on a variety of sexuality education topics; 3) supported instruction at all grade levels, especially beginning in middle school; and 4) believed instruction time for sexuality education in the high schools should either remain the same or be increased. In addition, a significant increase in support for sexuality education occurred from the beginning of the survey to the end, suggesting that the instrument itself may have served as an educational tool for respondents. The characteristics of registered voters who supported sexuality education at the beginning of the survey and at the end were examined and compared. These results may assist in the development of educational and marketing strategies designed to build support for school-based sexuality education programs in South Carolina and elsewhere.  相似文献

Both college level students and instructors alike have become frustrated with the modern textbook. Textbooks are expensive, passive in tone; water downed, and rarely has the breadth and depth that is needed for a course. Recently, Myles Johnson a former Psychology Instructor, has come up with an instructional method known as My Text that addresses these frustrations. Here students, with the instructor’s guidance, create their own textbooks. This paper takes a look at some of the Pedagogical merits of this method as a Learner Centered Approach and makes recommendations for future research.  相似文献

In this study, we elucidate the Fc epsilon RI-mediated Ag uptake and presentation mechanisms of dendritic cells (DC). We found that Fc epsilon RI-bound IgE, after polyvalent but not after monovalent ligation, is efficiently internalized into acidic, proteolytic compartments, degraded, and delivered into organelles containing MHC class II, HLA-DM, and lysosomal proteins. To follow the fate of the fragmented ligand, we sought to interfere with invariant chain (Ii) degradation, a process critical for peptide loading of nascent MHC class II molecules. We found DC to express cathepsin (Cat) S, a cysteine protease involved in Ii processing by B cells. Exposure of DC to a specific, active-site inhibitor of Cat S resulted in the loss of anti-Cat S immunoreactivity, led to the appearance of an N-terminal Ii remnant, and decreased the export of newly synthesized MHC class II to the DC surface. Furthermore, inactivation of Cat S as well as blockade of protein neosynthesis by cycloheximide strongly reduced IgE/Fc epsilon RI-mediated Ag presentation by DC. Thus, multimeric ligands of Fc epsilon RI, instead of being delivered into a recycling MHC class H pathway, are channeled efficiently into MIIC (MHC class II compartment)-like organelles of DC, in which Cat S-dependent Ii processing and peptide loading of newly synthesized MHC class II molecules occur. This IgE/Fc epsilon RI-dependent signaling pathway in DC may be a particularly effective route for immunization and a promising target for interfering with the early steps of allergen presentation.  相似文献

Hernia is a defect of the abdominal wall. Treatment is principally surgical mesh implantation. Non‐degradable surgical meshes produce numerous complications and side‐effects such as inflammatory response, mesh migration and chronic pain. In contrast, the biodegradable, poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) based polymers have excellent chemical, mechanical and biological properties and after their degradation no chronic pain can be expected. The toxicology of PVA solution and fibers was investigated with Human dermal fibroblast‐ Adult cell line. Implantation tests were observed on long‐term contact (rat) and large animal (swine) models. To measure the adhesion formation, Diamond and Vandendael score were used. Macroscopical and histological responses were graded from the samples. In vitro examination showed that PVA solution and fibers are biocompatible for the cells. According to the implantation tests, all samples were integrated into the surrounding tissue, and there was no foreign body reaction. The average number of adhesions was found on the non‐absorbable suture line. The biocompatibility of the PVA nanofiber mesh was demonstrated. It has a non‐adhesive, non‐toxic and good quality structure which has the potential to be an alternative solution for the part of the hernia mesh.  相似文献

Four different backward adaptive predictors and a fixed predictor are compared for use in an adaptive differential pulse code modulation (ADPCM) system for coding speech at 16 kilobits/second (kbits/s). For noise-free channels, the four adaptive predictors, a least squares lattice, a least mean square lattice, a Kalman transversal form, and a gradient transversal form, all exceed the fixed predictor performance as well as the performance of a continuously variable slope delta (CVSD) modulation system. For bit error rates (BER's) of 10-3or greater, the transversal predictor performance falls below that of the fixed predictor and CVSD; however, the lattice structures maintain their performance advantage. The least squares lattice predictor has the best objective and subjective performance for both noiseless and noisy channels. All systems perform poorly for a BER of 10-2. To extend the performance of ADPCM with a least squares lattice predictor down to a BER of 10-2, the sampling rate is reduced and a selective coding scheme is devised. The resulting ADPCM system maintains excellent performance through a BER of 10-2and outperforms CVSD for noise-free and noisy channels. The dynamic range, tandeming performance, and behavior for noisy inputs for the ADPCM system and CVSD are investigated.  相似文献

This paper describes a transform image coding system that uses soft decision demodulation to control channel errors. In soft decision demodulation, if certain received bits of a codeword representing a coefficient are unreliable, then the codeword is rejected and the corresponding coefficient is replaced with an estimate. By monitoring the three highest energy DCT coefficients, the reconstructed image quality can be improved for a channel with a bit error probability of 10-2.  相似文献
