Identifying the factors that affect domestic water demand and consumption is very important in management of available regional water resources. In this study, relationships between water consumption and rural household activities are determined by comparing a snapshot of water consumption with rural household behavior of low, medium and high water consumers. In addition, the factors affecting water consumption in rural households are also determined. The data for this study were collected from a survey of 653 rural households in 33 villages of Ramjerd area, Fars Province, in southern Iran, using a simple random sampling technique. The daily water consumption data for a 5-year period (1999-2004) were used. Results of the study revealed that the daily average water consumption for the area was found to be 121.7 l per person per capita per day (Lpcd) (SD=59.2). Water consumption was also found to be significantly correlated with explanatory variables such as “household size” and “age of household's head”. Finally, the results of discriminant function analysis showed that in rural households, garden size, greenhouse size, and garden watering times per month with tap treated water are associated with water consumption. 相似文献
Parasitoids are known to exploit volatile cues emitted by plants after herbivore attack to locate their hosts. Feeding and oviposition of a polyphagous herbivore can induce the emission of odor blends that differ among distant plant species, and parasitoids have evolved an incredible ability to discriminate them and locate their hosts relying on olfactive cues. We evaluated the host searching behavior of the egg parasitoid Cosmocomoidea annulicornis (Ogloblin) (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) in response to odors emitted by two taxonomically distant host plants, citrus and Johnson grass, after infestation by the sharpshooter Tapajosa rubromarginata (Signoret) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), vector of Citrus Variegated Chlorosis. Olfactory response of female parasitoids toward plants with no herbivore damage and plants with feeding damage, oviposition damage, and parasitized eggs was tested in a Y-tube olfactometer. In addition, volatiles released by the two host plant species constitutively and under herbivore attack were characterized. Females of C. annulicornis were able to detect and significantly preferred plants with host eggs, irrespectively of plant species. However, wasps were unable to discriminate between plants with healthy eggs and those with eggs previously parasitized by conspecifics. Analysis of plant volatiles induced after sharpshooter attack showed only two common volatiles between the two plant species, indole and β-caryophyllene. Our results suggest that this parasitoid wasp uses common chemical cues released by many different plants after herbivory at long range and, once on the plant, other more specific chemical cues could trigger the final decision to oviposit.
The potential use of a biosorbent, Cystoseira indica, obtained from the Persian Gulf was investigated for the removal of Th (IV) ions from aqueous solutions by considering equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic aspects. The FT-IR spectra of unloaded and Th-loaded biomass indicated various functionalities on the biomass surface including hydroxyl, amide and carboxyl groups, which are responsible for the binding of thorium ions. Th (IV) uptake by C. indica was pH dependent. An increase in biosorbent dosage up to 1 g/L caused an increase in the Th (IV) percentage removal. Biosorption process at all studied initial Th (IV) ion concentrations follows the pseudo-second order kinetic model. The biosorption data could be well described by Redlich-Peterson isotherm in comparison to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The maximum sorption capacity of Th (IV) by Langmuir isotherm was estimated to be 169.49 mg/g at 45 °C with pH of 3. The thermodynamic parameters indicated the biosorption of Th on the biomass was a feasible, spontaneous and endothermic process. Th sorption capacity remained unaffected or slightly affected (<10% inhibition) in the presence of several interfering ions such as uranium (VI), nickel (II) and copper (II). Crk is a member of a family of adapter proteins predominantly composed of Src homology 2 and 3 domains, whose role in signaling pathways is presently unclear. Using an in situ electroporation system which permits the introduction of glutathione S-transferase (GST) fusion proteins into cells, we found that c-CrkII bound to p130(cas), but not to paxillin in serum-starved rat-1 fibroblasts overexpressing the human insulin receptor (HIRc cells) in vivo. 17 nM insulin stimulation dissociated the binding of c-CrkII to p130(cas), whereas 13 nM insulin-like growth factor-I, 16 nM epidermal growth factor (EGF), and 10% serum each showed little or no effect. We found that stress fiber formation is consistent with a change in the p130(cas).c-CrkII interactions before and after growth factor stimulation. Microinjection of either GST-Crk-SH2 or -Crk-(N)SH3 domains, or anti-Crk antibody each inhibited stress fiber formation before and after insulin-like growth factor-I, EGF, and serum stimulation. Insulin stimulation by itself caused stress fiber breakdown and there was no additive effect of microinjection. Microinjection of anti-p130(cas) antibody also blocked stress fiber formation in quiescent cells. Microinjection of the Crk-inhibitory reagents also inhibited DNA synthesis after insulin-like growth factor-I, EGF, and serum stimulation, but not after insulin. These data suggest that the complex containing p130(cas).c-CrkII may play a crucial role in actin cytoskeleton organization and in anchorage-dependent DNA synthesis. 相似文献
