Abstract

Fullerenes are made by the intersection of twelve pentagonal nanocones. This note deals with an innovative isomeric mechanism, based on a sequence of Stone-Wales rotations, for moving the pentagonal face on the cusp of the nanocone. The modified nanocone is the seed for creating new fullerenes with different symmetry and size. Present results may help to model fullerene formation and, on the pure algorithmic side, may contribute to evolve the computer tools that generate fullerenes. This mechanism may also find application in mimicking the behaviors of biological systems that, like many viruses, are also describable in terms of spherical cages tiled by polygons.  相似文献

Abstract : Orally administered anticancer drugs facilitate treatment, but the acidic conditions in the stomach often challenge their availability. PhenolaTi is a TiIV-based nontoxic anticancer drug with marked in-vivo efficacy. We report that nanoformulation protects phenolaTi from decomposition in stomach-like conditions. This is evidenced by similar NMR characteristics and similar in-vitro cytotoxicity toward murine (CT-26) and human (HT-29) colon cancer cells before and after incubation of nanoformulated phenolaTi (phenolaTi-F) at pH 2, unlike results with the unformulated form of the complex. Furthermore, administration of phenolaTi-F in animal drinking water revealed a notable inhibition of tumor growth in Balb/c and immune-deficient (Nude) mice inoculated with CT-26 and HT-29 cells, respectively. In-vivo efficacy was at least similar to that of the corresponding intraperitoneal treatment with phenolaTi-F and the clinically employed oral drug, capecitabine. No body weight loss or clinical signs of toxicity were evident in the phenolaTi-F-treated animals. These findings demonstrate a new convenient mode of cancer treatment through oral administration by safe titanium-based drugs.  相似文献

We measured the dissipation resulting from internal friction in hcp solid 4He at temperatures between 0.8 K and 2.5 K. Solid 4He is contained inside an annular metal cell forming a part of a torsional oscillator. An oscillatory motion of the cell walls applies shear stress on the solid 4He. The resulting shear strain within the solid 4He generates dissipation because of the internal friction. The experimental sensitivity was high enough to detect dissipation caused by internal friction associated with elementary excitations of the solid. At temperatures below 1.6 K, internal friction is associated with diffusion of single point defects responsible for the climb of dislocations. At higher temperatures, the main mechanism of internal friction appears to be associated with phonon exchange between parts of the solid moving relative to each other under the applied shear stress. This particular dissipative mechanism was called “quantum phonon friction” [Popov in Phys. Rev. Lett. 83:1632–1635, 1999]. The physical mechanism associated with this type of friction involves an irreversible transfer of momentum from the phonons to the lattice via an Umklapp process. Our data are in a very good agreement with this model.

In Internet-based commerce, sellers often use multiple distribution channels for the sale of standard consumer goods. We study a model of second-degree price discrimination in which a monopolist sells to risk-averse buyers. The seller uses two channels that differ in their risk attributes. In one channel prices and qualities are fixed and availability is assured. In the second channel, the seller offers a joint distribution of prices and qualities and may not guarantee availability. We characterize optimal two-channel selling policies. We show that it can be optimal to offer multiple identical items in a random sale event. However, the seller cannot benefit by offering two distinct quality levels in a sale event that is held with probability smaller than one. We use the model to offer explanations for the observed behavior of online sellers and discuss implementation issues in recent e-commerce environments.  相似文献

The authors investigated the direct and interactive effects of the job demand– control–support (JDC-S) model’s components on subsequent changes in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides (TRI) separately for male and female employees. In contrast to all 14 past studies on these relationships, the authors used a longitudinal design. Study participants (N = 1,137, 66% men) were all apparently healthy employees who underwent a routine health check at 2 points in time (Time 1 and Time 2) about 22 months apart. In these analyses, the authors controlled for the Time 1 level of each criterion and for other confounders. Most of the direct and moderating effects found did not support the predictions of the JDC-S model; this finding is in agreement with the majority of past cross-sectional studies. The authors did not find any evidence supporting the existence of a reverse causation for either of the components of the JDC-S model. The authors suggest that serum lipids may not be a physiological mechanism mediating the effects of the JDC-S model on atherosclerotic diseases. A simple chemical oxidative polymerization of pyrrole (Py) directly onto the surface of LiFePO4 particles was applied to the synthesis of polypyrrole-LiFePO4 (PPy-LiFePO4) powder. The LiFePO4 sample without carbon coating was synthesized by a solvothermal method. The polyethylene glycol (PEG) was used as additive during Py polymerization for increasing the PPy-LiFePO4 conductivity. Properties of resulting LiFePO4, PPy-LiFePO4 and PPy/PEG-LiFePO4 samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, TGA and galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements. These methods confirmed the presence of polypyrrole on LiFePO4 particles and its homogeneous distribution in the resulting powder material. The PPy/PEG-LiFePO4 composites show higher discharge capacity than pure LiFePO4, as PPy/PEG network improves the electron conductivity. It presents specific discharge capacity of 153 mAh/g at C/5 rate.  相似文献

In this work, polyethyleneglycole (PEG) is introduced into polypyrrole (PPy) film coated on LiFePO4 powder particles to promote the properties of cathode material for lithium-ion batteries. The enhancement of the electrochemical activity by the substitution of a carbon with electrochemically active polymer is investigated. Films of the PPy doped with the PEG were prepared by the chemical oxidative polymerization of pyrrole (Py) monomer. PEG has been added as an additive during polymerization process to improve mechanical and structural properties of the PPy in final PPy/PEG-LiFePO4 cathode material. Cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and galvanostatic charge/discharge measurements were employed to characterize the electrochemical properties of PPy/PEG-LiFePO4 material. The electrochemical performance of PPy-LiFePO4 electrodes was greatly improved by introduction of PEG into the PPy films. Charge/discharge measurements confirmed the increase in capacity when applying PEG in PPy. The morphology and particle sizes of the prepared cathode powder material were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and particle size analysis (PSA). Distribution of PPy and PPy/PEG films onto the LiFePO4 particles surface was studied by time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS). In addition to polymeric coating layer on the surface of PPy-LiFePO4 composite particles, some PPy unequally distributed between the particles was found. The median diameter value is 4.92 μm for PPy-LiFePO4 sample. TOF-SIMS measurements and SEM images confirmed that thickness of polypyrrole coating on LiFePO4 particles is about 100 nm.  相似文献

Recently, we have developed an experimental method for the detection of triplet states generated by laser excitation in supersonic beams. It is based on electron ejection from low work-function surfaces by metastable triplet states. We have detected both directly laser-excited triplets and triplets generated via intersystem crossing from laser-excited singlet states. Here, we review the applications of this method and discuss its mechanism. By comparing the laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectrum and Surface Electron Ejection by Laser-Excited Metastables (SEELEM), we have measured relative triplet formation quantum yields for several aromatic compounds. By utilizing a detector mounted on a translational stage, we could vary the distance between the pulsed laser excitation and the detector and measure the decay rates of triplets in molecular beams. The major advantage of the method is in extending the measurement of triplet lifetimes to the ∼ 1-ms range. The combination of LIF, SEELEM, and fluorescence quantum yields enabled us to discriminate between intersystem crossing and internal conversion in isoquinoline. SEELEM is now being utilized in studying the spectroscopy and the dynamics of directly laser-excited triplet states. Although the oscillator strength of the lowest triplet state of pyrazine is about 10−8, we have measured the spectrum and the decay rates of its various vibronic levels. Our results support the notion that surface Penning ionization is the mechanism of SEELEM. The detector is insensitive to vibrational energy (thus enabling the distinction between intersystem crossing and internal conversion). The detection sensitivity of triplets rises with the excess electronic energy and with the lowering of the surface work-function.  相似文献
