Magnetic resonance imaging was used to visualize in-plane moisture transport in laboratory-made handsheets, heavy paperboard, and polyethylene-coated paperboard. Beginning with wet samples sealed on both surfaces, the moisture content was reduced through evaporation from the outside edges. The diffusion of moisture to the outside edges, i.e., in the plane of the sheets, was found to be isotropic with respect to the sample machine and cross directions. Isotropic in-plane moisture diffusion was observed for samples exhibiting a relatively high degree of fiber orientation, and under conditions of forced convection with air flow rates up to 10 L/min past the outside edges.  相似文献

The present study assessed drug use and the validity of self–reports of substance use among help–seeking veterans referred to a specialty clinic for the assessment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Patients (n?=?341) were asked to provide a urine sample for use in drug screening as part of an evaluation of PTSD. Self–reports of substance use were compared with same–day supervised urine samples for 317 patients who volunteered to participate in a drug screening. Results suggested that self–reports were generally quite valid. Only 8% of the cases involved patients not reporting substance use detected by urine screens. A total of 42% of the participants were identified as using drugs of abuse (excluding alcohol) through self–report and urine drug screens. Among participants using drugs, PTSD diagnosis was significantly associated with greater marijuana and depressant use as compared with stimulant (cocaine and amphetamines) use. We conducted a systematic review of what is known about the relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and smoking to guide research on underlying mechanisms and to facilitate the development of evidence-based tobacco treatments for this population of smokers. We searched Medline, PsychINFO, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and identified 45 studies for review that presented primary data on PTSD and smoking. Smoking rates were high among clinical samples with PTSD (40%-86%) as well as nonclinical populations with PTSD (34%-61%). Most studies showed a positive relationship between PTSD and smoking and nicotine dependence, with odds ratios ranging between 2.04 and 4.52. Findings also suggest that PTSD, rather than trauma exposure itself, is more influential for increasing risk of smoking. A small but growing literature has examined psychological factors related to smoking initiation and maintenance and the overlapping neurobiology of PTSD and nicotine dependence. Observational studies indicate that smokers with PTSD have lower quit rates than do smokers without PTSD. Yet a few tobacco cessation treatment trials in smokers with PTSD have achieved quit rates comparable with controlled trials of smokers without mental disorders. In conclusion, the evidence points to a causal relationship between PTSD and smoking that may be bidirectional. Specific PTSD symptoms may contribute to smoking and disrupt cessation attempts. Intervention studies that test behavioral and pharmacological interventions designed specifically for use in patients with PTSD are needed to reduce morbidity and mortality in this population.  相似文献

Using ambulatory methods for 1 day of monitoring, the authors of this study investigated the association between smoking and situational cues in 63 smokers with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and 32 smokers without PTSD. Generalized estimating equations contrasted 682 smoking and 444 nonsmoking situations by group status. Smoking was strongly related to craving, positive and negative affect, PTSD symptoms, restlessness, and several situational variables among PTSD smokers. For non-PTSD smokers, the only significant antecedent variables for smoking were craving, drinking coffee, being alone, not being with family, not working, and being around others who were smoking. These results are consistent with previous ambulatory findings regarding mood in smokers but also underscore that, in certain populations, mood and symptom variables may be significantly associated with ad lib smoking. Despite the low concentrations of heavy metals in the surrounding medium, aquatic organisms take them up and accumulate them in their soft tissues to concentrations several fold higher than those of ambient levels (Bryan 1979; Rainbow et al. 1990). Knowledge of accumulation patterns of a particular trace metal is a prerequisite for understanding the significance of an observed metal concentration in a particular animal, especially from the aspect of biomonitoring. Many marine invertebrates accumulate heavy metals without any regulation and the accumulation necessarily being associated with mechanisms to store the metals in a detoxified form. Two detoxification mechanisms have been described, both of which may occur in one specimen. Heavy metals can either be bound up in insoluble metalliferous 'granules' (Mason and Nott 1981), or are bound to soluble metal-binding ligands, such as metallothioneins (Roesijadi 1992). Some marine decapod crustaceans have an innate ability to regulate the internal concentrations of essential but potentially toxic metals within a constant level, presumably to meet their metabolic demands (Rainbow 1985, 1992). However, at present, there is no such information relating to freshwater decapod crustaceans, especially shrimps which occupy a totally different environment. Macrobrachium malcolmsonii (Milne Edwards), a potential aquaculture species for freshwater is found in abundance in one of the major Indian rivers, the Cauvery. In the present study, an attempt was made to determine whether the freshwater prawn, M. malcolmsonii, is able to regulate the three essential elements, copper, chromium and zinc, over a wide range of dissolved concentrations. We show herein that human DNA topoisomerase II beta is functional in yeast. It can complement a yeast temperature-sensitive mutation in topoisomerase II. The effect on human topoisomerase II beta of a number of topoisomerase II inhibitors was analysed in a yeast in vivo system and compared with that of human topoisomerase II alpha and wild-type yeast topoisomerase II. A drug permeable yeast strain (JN394 top2-4) was used to analyse the in vivo effects of known anti-topoisomerase II agents on human topoisomerase II beta transformants. A parallel analysis on human topoisomerase II alpha transformants provides the first in vivo analysis of the responses of yeast bearing the individual isoforms to these drugs. The strain was analysed at 35 degrees C, a non-permissive temperature at which only plasmid-borne topoisomerase II is active. A shuttle vector with either human topoisomerase II beta, human topoisomerase II alpha or yeast topoisomerase II under the control of a GAL1 promoter was used. The key findings were that amsacrine produced comparable levels of cell killing with both alpha and beta, whilst etoposide, doxorubicin and mitoxantrone produced higher degrees of cell killing with alpha than with beta or yeast topoisomerase II. Merbarone had the greatest effect on the yeast strain bearing plasmid-borne yeast topoisomerase II. Suramin, quercetin and genistein showed little cell killing in this system. This yeast in vivo system provides a powerful way to analyse the effects of anti-topoisomerase II agents on transformants bearing the individual human isoforms. This system also provides a means of analysing putative drug-resistance mutations in human topoisomerase II beta or to select for drug-resistance mutations in human topoisomerase II beta.  相似文献

The present study investigated the relationship between daily diary affect ratings and ambulatory cardiovascular activity in 117 male Vietnam combat veterans (61 with posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD] and 56 without PTSD). Participants completed 12–14 hr of ambulatory monitoring and daily diary affect ratings. Compared with veterans without PTSD, veterans with PTSD reported higher negative affect and lower positive affect in daily diary ratings. No differences were detected for mean laboratory initial recordings or mean ambulatory heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), or diastolic blood pressure (DBP). However, compared with veterans without PTSD, veterans with PTSD demonstrated higher SBP and DBP variability and a higher proportion of HR activity (compared with initial recording values) during daily activity. There was a significant Time of Day × Group interaction for mean HR, with a trend for PTSD participants to maintain HR levels during evening hours. Gravimetry was used to study the diffusion of a homologous series of linear carboxylic acids (Cn, with n = 2, 6–16) in amorphous polystyrene at temperatures from 35 °C to 165 °C, that is, both below and above the polymer glass transition temperature of 100 °C. All the mass uptake results are well described by a simple Fickian model (for t < t1/2) and were used to calculate the corresponding diffusion coefficients using the thin-film approximation. Acetic acid exhibits a peculiar diffusion rate: its diffusion coefficients in polystyrene do not follow the same trend of all the remaining acids, being smaller than those of hexanoic acid at the same temperatures. Polystyrene swells at a higher rate in hexanoic and octanoic acids than in acetic acid, at the same temperature. This peculiarity is confirmed using NMR spectroscopy for acetic and hexanoic acids. For all the carboxylic acids considered, the temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficients is non-Arrhenius in character. For each liquid penetrant, its log(D) increases linearly with the decrease in liquid viscosity associated with an increase in temperature. Plots of log(n2D) versus n suggest that higher-n carboxylic acids diffuse through a reptation-like mechanism at higher temperatures.  相似文献
