Provided a normative data base for a measure of verbal supraspan based on 301 neurologically intact adults (aged 18–91 yrs) and examined the test's clinical sensitivity in 3 patient groups. Data from 55 patients with severe head trauma, 38 with right hemisphere and cerebrovascular accident (CVA), and 15 with left hemisphere CVA reveal significant age-related differences, with older Ss performing below levels obtained by younger ones. Group data reveal that Ss in all 3 groups performed significantly below levels obtained by age-matched controls. Supraspan scores did not correlate appreciably with years of education. However, scores on the supraspan test correlated modestly with Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale—Revised (WAIS—R) Information and Block Design scores, suggesting that task performance may be dependent in part on the S's general level of cognitive functioning. In this article, we investigate reaction solvent design using COSMO‐RS thermodynamics in conjunction with computer‐aided molecular design (CAMD) techniques. CAMD using COSMO‐RS has the distinct advantage of being a method based in quantum chemistry, which allows for the incorporation of quantum‐level information about transition states, reactive intermediates, and other important species directly into CAMD problems. This work encompasses three main additions to our previous framework for solvent design (Austin et al., Chem Eng Sci. 2017;159:93–105): (1) altering the group contribution method to estimate hydrogen‐bonding and non‐hydrogen‐bonding σ‐profiles; (2) ab initio modeling of strong solute/solvent interactions such as H‐bonding or coordinate bonding; and (3) solving mixture design problems limited to common laboratory and industrial solvents. We apply this methodology to three diverse case studies: accelerating the reaction rate of a Menschutkin reaction, controlling the chemoselectivity of a lithiation reaction, and controlling the chemoselectivity of a nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction. The mitochondrial, inner-membrane-associated, reversible NADPH-->NAD transhydrogenase of adult Hymenolepis diminuta physiologically couples matrix-localized, NADP-specific "malic" enzyme with NADH-dependent anaerobic electron transport. Employing submitochondrial particles (SMP) as the source of enzyme activity and both spectrophotometric and fluorometric assessments, the present study made evident that in its catalysis of transhydrogenation between NADPH and NAD, the cestode enzyme engages in the concomitant transmembrane translocation of protons. As assessed spectrophotometrically, the catalysis of NADPH-dependent NAD reduction by H. diminuta SMP was stimulated significantly by carbonyl cyanide 3-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP), carbonyl cyanide 4-(trifluoromethoxy) phenylhydrazone (FCCP), as well as by the protonophoric anthelmintic, niclosamide. In addition, N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCCD) markedly diminished SMP-catalyzed hydride ion transfer between NADPH and NAD. The catalysis by SMP of concomitant, transhydrogenase-mediated proton translocation was evaluated more directly via fluorometric assays using 8-anilino-1-napthalenesulfonic acid (ANS) as the probe. These latter evaluations revealed a transhydrogenase-dependent enhancement of ANS fluorescence in accord with an intravesicular accumulation of protons. ANS fluorescence was quenched rapidly when the assay system was supplemented with CCCP, FCCP, or niclosamide. Consistent with the helminth transhydrogenase acting as a proton pump, transhydrogenase-mediated enhanced fluorescence also was inhibited by DCCD. Considered collectively, these data indicated, apparently for the first time for any invertebrate system, that the transhydrogenase, in catalyzing the NADPH-->NAD reaction, acts in the translocation of protons from the matrix to the intermembrane space mitochondrial compartment.  相似文献

The MASC (Multiple ASsociative Computing) model is a multi-SIMD model that uses control parallelism to coordinate the interaction of data parallel threads and supports associative SIMD computing on each of its threads. There have been a wide range of algorithms developed for this model. Research on using this model in real-time system applications and building a scalable MASC architecture is currently quite active. In this paper, we present simulations between MASC and reconfigurable bus-based models, e.g., various versions of the Reconfigurable Multiple Bus Machine (RMBM). Constant time simulations of the basic RMBM by MASC and vice versa are obtained. Simulations of the segmenting RMBM, fusing RMBM, and extended RMBM by MASC in non-constant time are also discussed. By taking advantage of previously established relationships between RMBM and two other popular parallel computational models, namely, the Reconfigurable Mesh (RM) and the Parallel Random Access Machine (PRAM), we extend our simulation results to further categorize the power of the MASC model in relation to RM and PRAM.  相似文献

A recently developed tuning method is compared to an adaptive Smith Predictor control strategy. The robustness of each method is considered for time-varying plant parameters. This paper presents a review of thermal energy storage system design methodologies and the factors to be considered at different hierarchical levels for concentrating solar power (CSP) plants. Thermal energy storage forms a key component of a power plant for improvement of its dispatchability. Though there have been many reviews of storage media, there are not many that focus on storage system design along with its integration into the power plant. This paper discusses the thermal energy storage system designs presented in the literature along with thermal and exergy efficiency analyses of various thermal energy storage systems integrated into the power plant. Economic aspects of these systems and the relevant publications in literature are also summarized in this effort.  相似文献

This paper deals with the ability of a model to adapt algorithm instances of different sizes to run on a given model size without significant loss of efficiency. The overhead in simulating a step of a large instance of the model on a smaller instance can quantify this ability. A reconfigurable mesh (R-Mesh) can use its bus structure as a computational resource, presenting an obstacle to efficiently scaling down algorithms to run on a smaller R-Mesh. We construct a scaling simulation of a Fusing-Restricted Reconfigurable Mesh (FR-Mesh), a version of the R-Mesh. The overhead of this simulation depends only on the simulating machine size and not on the simulated machine size. Previously, the R-Mesh was not known to admit such a simulation overhead without significantly reducing its computational power. The small overhead holds importance for flexibility in algorithm design and for running algorithms with various input sizes on an available model of given size. The results of this paper extend to a variety of concurrent write rules and also translate to an improved scaling simulation of an unrestricted R-Mesh  相似文献

We define a new mathematical model for the topological study of lattice height data. A discrete multivalued dynamical system framework is used to establish discrete analogies of a Morse function, its gradient field, and its stable and unstable manifolds in order to interpret functions numerically given on finite sets of pixels. We present efficient algorithms detecting critical components of a height function f and displaying connections between them by means of a graph, called the Morse connections graph whose nodes represent the critical components of f and edges show the existence of connecting trajectories between nodes. This graph encodes efficiently the topological structure of the data and makes it easy to manipulate for subsequent processing.

Used a verbal selective reminding paradigm to examine rate of forgetting in a sample of 287 normal adults (aged 18–91 yrs). Results reveal that older Ss performed below levels obtained by younger ones on several measures of acquisition and delayed recall. Data also reveal very modest differences in rate of forgetting. However, the pattern of differences in forgetting varied, depending on the index used to measure what was stored during acquisition. Older adults obtained marginally higher forgetting rates using 2 of 3 indexes but exhibited less forgetting when another index was used. Data suggest that using the Trial 12 score for long-term storage (H. Buschke and P. Fuld, 1974) to calculate forgetting may be more valid from a practical and theoretical standpoint than using other learning measures.
