This study addressed the role of electronic pocket dictionaries as a language learning tool among university students in Hong Kong and Taiwan. The target groups included engineering and humanities students at both undergraduate and graduate level. Speed of reference was found to be the main motivator for using an electronic pocket dictionary. Next, the functionality used was found to be connected to the language proficiency of the learner. Finally, multimedia content was ranked least important. The results of this study have implications for the design of electronic dictionaries and for the teaching of second languages with electronic dictionaries. In particular, device developers should focus on improving the accessing speed and pay less attention to multimedia functionality. Educators should ensure that the device functionality matches the language proficiency level of the students.  相似文献

We developed a dual-probe (DP) atomic force microscopy (AFM) system that has two independently controlled probes. The deflection of each cantilever is measured by the optical beam deflection (OBD) method. In order to keep a large space over the two probes for an objective lens with a large numerical aperture, we employed the OBD sensors with obliquely incident laser beams. In this paper, we describe the details of our developed DP-AFM system, including analysis of the sensitivity of the OBD sensor for detection of the cantilever deflection. We also describe a method to eliminate the crosstalk caused by the vertical translation of the cantilever. In addition, we demonstrate simultaneous topographic imaging of a test sample by the two probes and surface potential measurement on an α-sexithiophene (α-6T) thin film by one probe while electrical charges were injected by the other probe.  相似文献

Visually impaired individuals often rely on assistive technologies such as white canes for independent navigation. Many electronic enhancements to the traditional white cane have been proposed. However, only a few of these proof-of-concept technologies have been tested with authentic users, as most studies rely on blindfolded non-visually impaired participants or no testing with participants at all. Experiments involving blind users are usually not contrasted with the traditional white cane. This study set out to compare an ultrasound-based electronic cane with a traditional white cane. Moreover, we also compared the performance of a group of visually impaired participants (N = 10) with a group of blindfolded participants without visual impairments (N = 31). The results show that walking speed with the electronic cane is significantly slower compared to the traditional white cane. Moreover, the results show that the performance of the participants without visual impairments is significantly slower than for the visually impaired participants. No significant differences in obstacle detection rates were observed across participant groups and device types for obstacles on the ground, while 79% of the hanging obstacles were detected by the electronic cane. The results of this study thus suggest that electronic canes present only one advantage over the traditional cane, namely in its ability to detect hanging obstacles, at least without prolonged practice. Next, blindfolded participants are insufficient substitutes for blind participants who are expert cane users. The implication of this study is that research into digital white cane enhancements should include blind participants. These participants should be followed over time in longitudinal experiments to document if practice will lead to improvements that surpass the performance achieved with traditional canes.

Umkehrwalze A was the original reflector used in the version of the Enigma machine employed by the German armed services. Its wiring was originally deduced by the Polish cryptanalyst Marian Rejewski in December 1932 or January 1933, but details of the wiring have not previously been published. Sufficient information to recover the wiring analytically is provided in a wartime document by Alan Turing, and other sources have been found to confirm the solution. This paper presents the wiring, along with alternative methods of recovering it from Turing's data.  相似文献

Ceramic hybrids are the preferred solution when long-term high-temperature reliability is required, but standard plastic encapsulated microcircuits (PEMs) are an interesting alternative due to low price and high availability. Test vehicles with standard PEMs were subjected to thermal ageing at 150–175 °C. Six of eight vehicles failed after only three weeks at 175 °C, and the cause of failure was found to be microcracking at the interface between gold ball and aluminium bond pad giving rise to resistance increase. The intermetallic region was formed during high-temperature lead soldering and continued to develop during thermal ageing. The high-temperature performance of aluminium wire bonding to a selection of thick film metallizations on ceramic substrate was also investigated. Gold–palladium has previously been reported as a high-temperature solution, but we found that the mechanical strength of aluminium to gold–palladium (AuPd) degraded seriously at temperatures above 200 °C due to intermetallic formation. Aluminium to silver thick film plated with copper and nickel showed good mechanical strength and unaltered electrical resistance after four weeks thermal ageing at 250 °C.  相似文献

A general method which combines formant synthesis by rule and time-domain concatenation is proposed. This method utilizes the advantages of both techniques by maintaining naturalness while minimizing difficulties such as prosodic modification and spectral discontinuities at the point of concatenation. An integrated sampled natural glottal source (Matsui et al., 1991) and sampled voiceless consonants were incorporated into a real-time text-to-speech formant synthesizer. In special cases, voicing amplitude envelopes and formant transitions dirived from natural speech were also utilized. Several listening tests were performed to evaluate these methods. We obtained a significant overall improvement in intelligibility over our previous formant synthesizer. Such improvements in intelligibility were previously obtained with a Japanese text-to-speech system using a related hybrid system (Kamai and Matsui, 1993), indicating the applicability of this method for multi-lingual synthesis. The results of subjective analyses showed that these methods can alo improve naturalness and listenability factors.  相似文献
